Post by: bidubida on June 25, 2006, 09:30:57 pm

I didn't see this informations in the website of tremulous, and if it was in the site, I presente my excuses.

Thank for your future answer.

Tremulous is the work of modders, mappers etc and as far as I know none of them have jobs in the game business.

Depends what you mean by 'amateur' and 'professional'. As far as I can see, it doesn't make money except in donations. Then again, it's professional *quality*, and I wouldn't be surprised if some of the developers work (or have worked) in computer science/game dev

"Un jeu amateur est un jeu vidéo développé par un ou plusieurs particuliers en dehors du cadre d'une entreprise ou d'une organisation commerciale."
Wikipedia fr

In english it give :
"An amateur game is a video game developed by one or severals privates person out of the context of an enterprise or a trading-company."
(sorry if the translation is not perfect)

As I know the project Tremulous isn't commercial, and I think the team is a team of privates persons, the game must be amateur.
Now i would like to know if my thought is right. And if it is right, Tremulous is an amateur game.

Your thoughts are probably right, but does that imply anything about quality? It does not take money to make a quality and/or fun game.
On the other hand there are a lot of companies that professionally produce a lot of s**t... ;)

Yes, justly, I want to do a test for this game beacause I like it, and I will not tell a game has a bad quality if I like it  :)
And, Tremulous has a good quality

I just wanted to make clear that it does not play a role if the game is a commercial / professional or an amateur / freeware one. What really plays a role is that the game is a fun and quality one, I did not imply he implied anything!
Nothing more, nothing less... ;)

As this label "amateur" any sense? because I think Tremulous has anothing to do with "Amateur Porn" or "amateur robots".

I think Tremulous is a new breed of opensource games. The same breed as Nexuiz and Alien Arena. Good games with a very good engine (Quake3,Quake2+) that are good enough for any gamer and add a few open source goodies ...hee.. "features".

Labeling Tremulous amateur adds nothing, because is a new concept that combine the better genes from comercial software (the Quake3 engine) and the better genes from the open source community (the community thing, freedom, etc).

Well, now you know that the word "amateur" is a loaded one :)

Even though the dictionary says one of the definitions is
Code: [Select]

(noun) one who engages in a pursuit, study, science, or sport as a pastime rather than as a profession

which is obviously what you meant.  However the more popular usage tends to be more often:
Code: [Select]

(adj) of inferiour quality, shitty, incompetent, or produced by a bunch of mindless jerks.

(Well, in American English anyway :))

Trem would rank as amatuer as its as it isn't developed full time(i think) and the team don't earn a salary from it.

Just gotta be careful with context as in a job sense it should mean time/money in regards to it as compared to implying a distinct lack of effort going into it.

I hope that's a rhetorical question.
