I'm in a newbly helping mood, I'll hold your hand for the first five minutes. Go rifle, stay with your squaddies, don't forget to look up, five rifle bullets to kill a dretch, watch your head, if you get any damage, use your medkit, dretch headbites do 96 damage, one more ankle-bite and you're toast, they can "head-bite" you from the ground, and then ankle-bite you and you're dead. Think about clip management, and how much ammo and health you have between engagements. Find a friend, someone who is telling ppl what to do. Listen to him for a couple of games. Find a new leader. Compare advice.

Get a Helmet as soon as Stage 2 arrives for your team. "Reinforcements have arrived!" Go back to base, walk up to Armory. Press Q. Buy Helmet and Light Armor.

After a while, try the shotgun dance. Let the dretches come at you, then "Bla-DOW!", dodge, dance, turn, blast. Keep killing dretches and staying with your squaddies for a day or two, and spectate anyone who is better than you. Which may well be everybody, but I recommend lots of spectating when you are new. Play a map as Human. The next time you see it, spec the Alien team. How did they pillage you so much? Watch them, and learn their tricks. Then you will know where to aim, in future.

Good luck. Tremulous has a steep learning curve, but lots of players who are willing to train you, if you let them.

-Fire your rifle in bursts (5-10 shots), so the aliens don't know exactly when you're reloading.  Often newer players will come straight in at you after a burst, thinking you're reloading.  Then you can pick them off at will.

-After a kill, if you have less than 15 ammo, it may be wise to reload.  Watch your ammo usage though, when you're down to one clip, head back to base.

-Call "Flanked" if you're in the base and see a dretch or dragoon head into the hall through your base.  Might save a teammates life.

-Utilize radar blindspots on ATCS.  If you don't know what they are, get on Dretch*Storm, AA, or {V} and ask around.  Someone might eventually help you.

-Never crouch while wearing a helmet.  It negates the helmets effects, and allows you to die quicker.

-If you hear an alien crying, even if all you have is a rifle and no armor, chase it.  The risk is worth it.

-Each lucifer cannon charge does 25 damage.  Depending on your enemy, and what their health is, try to charge your cannon accordingly.  While fighting a dragoon, you'll want to hit it with at least an 80% charge.

-Never aim your lucifer cannon at your base.  If some alien is on top of the reactor, quickly buy a lasgun or mass driver and shred it.

-Don't luci-spam.  It hurts your teammates, and annoys the hell out of everyone on the server.  If you have a full charged lucifer shot and your opponent ran away, rather than firing it, toggle your blaster.  That will dispel the shot without damaging you, or consuming ammunition.

-Sprint a lot.  (X key)

Welcome to Tremulous.
You can also join our Wrath Newbie Training Server  (http://tremulous.net/forum/index.php?topic=9106.0) and do some lessons versus our bots or get a personal training by one of our teachers.

Heres a few basic tips:

-Never go to servers like [X], [A], or any other server that has balance changes if you want to improve your skills (You can always go to them if you want a bit of fun tho). Try going on clan servers like vR or servers like AA where they keep to what Tremulous should be.
-Make sure before building you have atleast one teammate watching your back.
-Never try to build a base where turrets require humans jumping over them to get through.
-If you rush alone, then expect to be raped. Remember the buddy system- never leave your base without atleast one guy watching your back/front.
-Don't try using the P-saw at first, its pretty much the most difficult weapon to kill with if in-experienced. Try to get the hang of the other weapons before practicing the Psaw, so atleast you'll have a back up weapon you're good at.

Actually I wouldnt suggest using that server, the bots are actually hard.

Just some notes:

* Bursts aren't going to fool an alien, they can *see* when you reload because the weapon is pointing down.

* There are several team chat shouts that you should bind to some key so you can use them quickly.
"I'm out of ammo/HP, going back."
"I'm attacking, who's with me." (actually the "come on!" taunt is more useful because it also identifies you visually; you can bind them both to same key)
"Grenade!" (esp. useful if you bind it together with the action of throwing the grenade; useful shout for both aliens and humans)
"Base under attack!"
"Enemy OM/RC/arm down, attack now!"

If you think the bots on Wrath are hard, you are severely unprepared to deal with good human players.

The bots are stripped to basic forms at all times (dretch or naked pistol man) and are pretty dumb ie. will only follow if they see you, they gather under you if you're jetting, they don't build, they don't evolve and so on. It's easy for instance to lure the entire bot team away then have your way with their base.

Granted, they're good dancers and have perfect aim. But consider the game scenarios. There's either regular games, with mainly humans on both teams and only one bot for each team; and then there are "hunt the eggs" or "exterminate the humans" scenarios where you work with your entire team against an all-bot team. Overall, they make for decent basic training.

Actually Im a very good player, youd be surprised how well I do on the servers i play on. But the problem with bots is exactly that, perfect aim and good dancers, and its a server filled with new players who have NO idea what to do? yeah...

There aren't only new players. I saw there regular players from any other servers. And yes, basic amine trembot bots are very hard to kill.

Sorry, buddy, but - did you already read the manual?

Another tipp from "... a real darling": Run Tremulous, open console and type the following:

Code: [Select]
/devmap atcs
/g_alienstage 2
/g_humanstage 2

Then, select a team, go to console again, and type

Code: [Select]
/give funds 9999
Now you can happily try out ALL the weapons, ALL the equipment, ALL the alien classes, and don't forget to try to build, maybe switch teams and then try to kill the base. This is good for practising at the start.

To clarify some things:
- our bots are a slightly improved version of Anime's bots. As alien they play dretch only, as human blaster only. They move in a very predictable way and are the best we can get atm as some kind of 'easy targets' for New Players.

- Newbies enjoy playing on our server mainly because they can have some success here - may it be versus the bots or versus other Newbies (Godd players get limited on our server btw). Where is the fun in this game if you get slaughtered by good players all the time?

- We have a lot of good players flying by to give the Newbies a helping hand: by spectating, giving comments and helpful tips or just by running around as target.

And if the Newbies want to play a normal game versus good players - there are about 200 servers in the list. Make your choice.

This is probably the most important tip of all;

Press "f" freqently and consistantly, if you look at another player it is almost unwritten that you must press "f"

lol? next time you run tremulous kaine make sure where it says "Show Full Servers" and "Show Empty Servers" it says yes next to them THEN click get new server list and you'll ahve around 215 servers to pick from.

For taunting? (which I'm pressuming jake has his 'F' key bound to) A little excessive don't you think? Especially when it's easily disabled.

lol they would have to be a bit psycotic to want to mute (as that will no't work) or kick, taunting is funny, i begin every game by typing in /+button3 . Players who get offended by that must have some serious mental condition, perhaps they should go and hide under a table untill they die to protect themselves from the world.

jake: Do you realize that taunting actually has a meaning/makes sense ingame? ::) It means: "group up with me, follow me", it is important and useful. Players in human team having "autotaunt" on are prone to receive "suppressive actions" by their teammates, and usually get kicked after some time. (I actually have never seen a game with more then five people in human team, where a perma-taunter has not gotten kicked.) Like Kaleo said, it is just annoying. If you want to annoy someone, go tickle your hamster or something.

F is funny, yelling COME ON  is funny, and players with any sense run around with me anyways. Not only is it funny but it increases battle field awareness by letting you know that your teammate is behind you or around in your genral location.

It creates awareness alright. It also makes aliens aware of your position. :) And since we're talking about newbie training, that is not a good idea.

Which brings me to another point which is often overlooked: training with other newbies will only get your skills up to the best they have to offer. The carefully controlled environment and bots of the Wrath Newbie server will never produce a good player out of you if you realise this.

This is why Wrath (and training in general) needs two things: a constant challenge, and rational explanations of what you're doing wrong.

Examples:

* Sometimes Wrath is visited by players who are content in simply slaughtering newbies by the dozens and gathering 60 kills alone while their teammates barely get 10 each. They don't offer any feedback, just pound the enemies into the ground. That's not training, it's punishment. Sure, some people will be able to come out with insight and skills out of something like that, but the vast majority won't.

* Another example is something we saw just the other day: a human builder who disregarded advice from everyone telling him why his base was wrong. Eventually they had to actually demonstrate how a single goon could wipe out everything in a couple of tries. His excuse: we're all newbies here so a newb setup is just fine; no use worrying about an advanced tactic. Which is wrong; if you don't think ahead and plan to evolve you'll never get past the newb level.

To get back on topic; luvs2spooge, here is my advice:

* Do what other players said above; practice alone on devmap. Learn how to move with aliens and shoot the guns. Learn the maps. Practice interesting setups as a builder (think of good spots and configurations; time what it takes to build them).

* For pure move and shoot skills, practice against bots. Wrath offers bots, albeit dumb, they are good enough for newbies. Servers with "Arena" in their name offer "invasion", which is a human base under constant alien storm. There are servers where you can practice trick jumps. You can setup your own local server and add bots to it.

* Customize your keyboard and mouse binds for fast in-game actions (healing, buying, evolving, building, communication). Get a good HUD (I like Volt's). You can find details all around these forums. These modifications will improve your reaction time. You will not get anywhere if you don't do this; you simply can't compete against players who spend half a second at the armory or heal at the touch of a button.

* Go on servers and spectate good players. Learn what they do right. Learn what bad players do wrong. If you play and you get beat up constantly, spectate your nemesis or ask them how they do it (on Wrath at least they are pretty much obligated to tell you).

* Challenge yourself constantly. As a builder, look for new ideas. As a fighter, try limiting yourself to a certain class or gun until you get better.

* Read these forums for strategy tips and for lots of other advice.

* Practice, practice, practice. I've been playing Trem for about 4 months, after not playing any FPS previously, and I'm still a long way from being a good player. But I still learn and try to make it up in other ways. For instance, you can be an outstanding builder even if your shooter skills are mediocre.

* Be polite and it's a good idea to add "newb" to your nickname. IMHO it helps, at least you won't get yelled at (as much). You'd have to be a really bastard or really cranky to get upset at a person who openly admits they're newbs and nicely asking for help or forgiveness. Also, it helps to remember that in-game chat is not a perfect means of communications. Confusions take place. You could even get kicked and temporarily banned once in a while. It happens. Don't take it personally.

* Control your temper. Sometimes the game gets really heated and there are things that will simply make you go nuts (like deconners; a person who destroys their own base in the middle of a game then runs away from the server, causing their team to lose).

As much as i love pressing f for fun, real advice would be listen to Urcscumug - he pointed out some valuable info, also take a bit of time to watch some good players, try to learn what they do and ask why they do it if it looks really confusing, like running back from a wall instead of just running around it.

Imo the best way to learn weapons is to get as good as you can with a rifle/dretch  if you are good with the free classes you will always have evos/credits and can upgrade at will.

And the biggest point would be if your new, do everything you can not to die, if your s1 and you get below 94 hp, run back to base grab 100hp + medkit. Always buy helmet and larmour, and as an alien, try not to treat dretch like a suicider, when you get low like every other alien just wait for your hp to return. If you follow that part of how to stay alive and if you use basic weapons you will end up with alot more credits/evos, which then you should also share to good, known players when there low and they will share you back, eventually you will just join games and instantly be given evos/credits as you are known as a friendly player.

 : )
