If you are the kind of semi-beginner that plays Tremulous just to get kills, here is a way to boost your kill count.
When ATCS first starts, hustle your human bustle over to the entrance of the alien base. Sprint all the way. 2-3 dretchs will most likely jump at you in the first 30 seconds. If you are good enough to kill these, you usually have a clear shot at a granger meandering across your line of fire.
1 thing you want to remember is not to waste ammo. If there are 3 dretchs about to kill you, you don't want to be reloading. If necessary, back into the right or left corner.
You wont last forever in this position, but you might have a chance to kill several more dretchs/grangers. Not only does it add to your kill count, you get a ;lot of credits that can be used in later stages.

...And if you're a dretch, go as fast as possible to the top of the bunker outside the human base and wait for the human ninjas that try to pull stuff like the above. :) You'll get there before they get to the yard and you'll hold the higher position. Even better, they have no radar and you do. Provided you keep the jumps to a minimum (so as not to give away your position) you have a greater chance of getting them before they get you.

Or just go hall and let the rapeing begin ::) Most people go hall, its smaller so dretches dont have much room to run away and hide. And as long as you are talking about playing noob alien teams then yeah this will work.
Not uncommon for me to have 30+ kills in 2 minutes into a noob game. But kills dont mean skill. I do play most of fun games to get a lot of kills though, just seems funner to me. But I rarely ever attack front until s2 or s3. Attacking it at s1 is dumb. To many spots for aliens to hide and rape you.

i agree max, or just do as i do get 3-4 kills in the first min. of game then get md and snipe all the dretches who are desperate for evos :D

I would recommend that you do some scouting. You should see what dretchs are easy targets and see what are the ones that you need to stay away from. If the 1337 variety of dretch comes after you, I recommend that you backpedal/run as fast as you can to a turret and use it to your advantage. Though it might encourage the player to do this often, it is just recommended until the player improves on his or hers skill. Well theres my two cents. I also suggest the comments above seeing as they are from experienced players.

A good dretch isn't trying to sneak up behind a human, a good dretch will stay behind a wall and once the human is close enough to him, he will use his wall walkin' n dodgin' skillz to avoid the human's bullet while biting him, as he knows a good human will kill him before he gets near him. So use the map at your advantage so you can jump on your opponent and start the fight at close range. Hide behind objects instead of sneaking to a human, if you achieve to do that, it will always be too late for the human.

Speaking of which, I've spectated human players who miss alien movements at the edge of their viewfield. And sure enough, a moment later that alien will hit them squarely in the back. I'm not sure what to make of it, especially since I've seen it happen rather often. Am I fortunate in some way for being able to notice such things or is it the norm and those players were inexperienced or not paying attention?

It's easier to see while specing. And you can see it all the time in demos. It usually happens coming across up high, so the best thing to do is keep your aim level, maybe slightly up. It's easier to rapidly bring your aim back down than it is the quickly bring it up anyhow.
