This is a gonna be a bit wall-of-texty so bear with me.
A few (unnamed) people have been complaining about trem dying. While I'm sick of the poorly placed blame and even poorer ability to utilize spell check I do have to agree with them. The fact is trem isn't what it used to be. I was playing this game before MW first started (shudder) and when the BEER clan was the most l33t. There were more servers than one hoped to bother with and many were chalk full of people playing and having fun. Needless to say this was awesome; but enough with my nostalgia induced rants.
My solution is simple and easy to execute:
kill the batman. Community promotion of Tremulous. Sounds to easy? That's because it is! I have a few ideas listed below.
Via other forums.
A lot of us are on more than one forum (probably) and we can easily promote there. I'm not saying creepy promotion along the lines of PMing people to play trem or posting new topics about "this gret game LOLOLOL!1!!11!!1" But something like: Having tremulous related things in your siggy
or bringing it up in relevant conversation and posts. I'll give some examples.
In ones siggy they could have something as simple as this:
What is Tremulous (http://www.tremulous.net/)?
Or something more complicated like a banner or a gif etc.
The point is people would see that and become interested and that's what we want!
Something I want to point out is that the average internet user is a hard, cold and calculating man (or woman) who is immune to the mass of advertising that is so un-sacredly and relentlessly shelled unto them. But we have a secret weapon...Our product is actually free unlike those MMOs and warrock-esque games. This goes into my next example of forum advertising (if you want to call it that.)
Posting about Tremulous.
When one posts about trem I'm not talking about this:

Because that's what will happen, you will get banned.
I'm talking more like bringing trem up in conversations where people will appreciate it like:

Or you could start posts in the gaming section of the forums (most forums have these) titled:
Looking for a casual free game?
Or something along these lines.
People
get creative! The internet brought us marketing techniques so broad that it's mind blowing! We just need to use them. Here are some forums that you should start promoting on (besides the ones you're already using)
gamspot/FAQs forums. (http://www.gamespot.com/forums/index.html?navclk=forums&tag=nav-top;forums) This is one of the largest PC gamer forums that I know of.
The Penny Arcade forums. (http://forums.penny-arcade.com/index.php) Again, a huge online PC gamer base.
The explosm comic forums. (http://forums.explosm.net/forumdisplay.php?f=49) More specifically the video game section of these forums. A good place to promote.
The IGN forums (http://boards.ign.com/) Great place for gamers to promote to gamers.
The gametrailers forums (http://forums.gametrailers.com/) Again another gamer forum.
There are a lot more forums out there but these are a good start.
I know a lot of you might say "this will take a lot of time!!11!!1!" All I have to say is: You guys haven't wasted time before? At least this time you would be helping people. So think about it.
-Dude out.
you made the links in the examples temulous.net...
Sigh. Missing my concept entirely...
You misspelled "Tremulous" and then he misspelled "made" when correcting you, how funny.
Also I lol'd at kill the batman.
I understand your idea but Tremulous has been posted all over the internet, including sites like Digg and Slashdot - both of which are extremely popular. I guess what you're suggesting couldn't hurt but I don't think it'll do as much as you think. I for one try to bring it up whenever the subject of video games comes around, but that's just me.
I do understand what you're saying. All I'm trying to do is give a solution to the problem. It wouldn't hurt to have tremulous in more places on the internet and it's not that hard to do so. That's all.
I agree that advertising Tremulous will help, but I think it requires more involvement than just telling random people that it exists. For the sake of brevity, I won't go in detail, but instead of advertising to random people, I think each person needs to network socially. Tremulous requires more work from new players than most other games require, so most new players need help starting. Although a manual, forums, and random websites are available, most users would sooner consult a friend or give up than consult any of the other resources. Because of this, I think anyone who wants to increase the Tremulous population should focus on making more friends and advertising to friends.
Tremulous is in no way dying. It is an amazing game that will not die for a long time. I see new players on every day. :)

No lie. I played on my clan's server every day for two weeks, and every day I played with differently named people. Shortly I realized that they were the same people using different names, and when I pointed out they were someone else they yelled at me for "blowing their cover" as if they were undercover cops.
F B I! Please don't force us to break your neck! (It's a helllotta paper work)
You wanna promote this game, release a fucking update already. The problem with this game is that the dev's actually have lives.
All the promotion Tremulous needs is 1.2 and make sure it's easy to join a game with 1.2.
That, and remove the kickban of unnamed players from servers. If players are kicked they won't stay.
usually social networks are a place to put a website link. So you could put it in there to spark the interest of people visiting your page.

Hi,
I am going to make a blog related with Tremulous on the website of the famous CS french team [aAa].
I hope it will bring us players, and not only retarded kevins who are common on CSS.
Good luck. :)
I was thinking about the same thing, just before this poame out. I am in the process of making a promotional video right now. It's nothing special, my first vid ever, But I will post it on the forums here & in my own post when its done.
Why does Tremulous need to be promoted? There is no money to be made from it, and there are still plenty of servers that get activity in both hemispheres.
Many people (including me) don't think tremulous is getting enough players. Though there are already many people playing, and more every day, most of these people are smart enough to be looking for these good games. Tremulous isn't exactly "popular" so most people looking for a good game to play end up paying for a game instead of finding tremulous or other open-source games. The point of this thread is to find ways to promote in our everyday and internet lives.

Seriously, it exists.
In France, we've got something horrible called "SMS writing style on forums" (perhaps it exists in others countries, I don't know). It is something like writing like that in english: "hai i r kevin lolz kan i haz cheez ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D??????"
People who often use that without particular reasons (on forums, you have the time to write and check your grammar) are noticed like kevins.
Exemple of kevin: The wonderfull and admirable blog of a typical kevin (http://chasseurdetete.skyrock.com/) (in French, but it's very enjoyable).
(Sorry for english, and end of off-topic)

ever heard of a game called "Linerider"? Well... They promoted it and now you have to BUY IT. We don't want that to happed to Tremulous, do we now? NO! Leave Tremulous the way it is, or just tell your friends about it.
It's impossible for Tremulous to cost anything, it's open-source. As long as people are willing to put forth the effort to promote it by their own means and for free, it can be promoted, it just takes something a lot of people lack - initiative and commitment.

if the license is changed to say... BSD the source can be 100% open but you can charge for binaries or you can leave portions of code open like the game engine.

Well, I don't think that id will release it's code under a BSD license, so you can't change the tremulous license before the copyright runs out.
Another solution is to make Tremulous "syndicatable." That means loosely, make it so other people can and want to publish information about Tremulous.
For instance, what would someone want to share about themselves in Tremulous? Kills, win/loss record, favorite weapons, whatever. How do you prove you are good at Tremulous? Maybe an official tournament, bracketing, or skill ranking system could be implemented. What if tremulous could record and export movies to a common format (mpeg)? What if the tournaments/bracketing/ranking was "covered" by cameramen who publish the games on Youtube?
What is happening right now in Tremulous? What map is my favorite server playing, and who is playing on it? Are my friends currently playing?
What vectors can this information be shared? Forum signatures (dynamic images). Social networking apps. Mobile applications. Instant messaging. HTML iframes. Flash apps.
If you spend the time to make something that works for you, your resulting marketing affect is multiplied by the number of people who care about the game.

Any centrally stored DB will be flooded with bogus info. Lot's of servers run localised versions of that though.
Support for ffmpeg has already been added, there should be a patch floating around somewhere. Last I heard it wasn't going to be added to 1.2 due to dependency proliferation.
Go to master.tremulous.net to see what servers are doing. I'll try and get around to adding a "show all" and "hide all" button so you can search for players easier. Most servers also have their own status pages.
If you want a what game you are playing sig, there are plenty of services that will let you do it. It totally wouldn't surprise me if there are servers with such images available.
Tremulous needs supporters, with supporters Tremulous can afford a better game engine instead of ioquake3, by getting a better game engine can give Tremulous a better chance of getting promoted and more people. Tremulous also needs to advertise.
I've been working on that on YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M2yLtKMP1Ew&feature=channel_page) (video) and on my website (http://kitashi.host22.com/?x=entry:entry090523-153859) (informative advertisement). Thing is, the advertisements need advertised, which is why I said to just tell your friends about Tremulous.
That video has too much light. I play with this light (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yUSmWIS-JLw) and seems perfect to me.
I don't see why brightness is an issue here. Also, I didn't see much of a difference between the two brightnesses.

THe problem with conveying trem to the wider world is that people have no patience.
In a free game they downloaded, they want to be thrilled, have an awesome game, feast on sumptous graphics NOW.
However with trem, you download the game, you learn how to play, learn how to do all those small things that make you feel part of the community, find and download all those eye-feast maps, wait for that awesome game you play for a nerve-wracked and thrilling 2 hours.
All that waiting however, makes people who are used to just booting up a console, logging on and joining in with thousands of likewise people just seem to much for too little.
Therefore I propose we advertise Tremulous not as a game, but as a well aged wine.
And when 1.2 comes out, we can boast its been maturing since Plato pissed in a bottle.
Or stick with it as an Irn-Bru lookalike. <3 Irn Bru, that canned sperma/vita/dentacide.
I already thought about advertising tremulous and I think it will be usefull to make new players discovering it. If you do it principally on well-known gamer websites/forums, we may have many players of different countries. But you need to develop the concept , or give a direct link that explains all : This is a game aliens vs humans etc...
I think it can work nicely.
Gonna try to upload some videos capturing the core gameplay of Trem; eg full 32 players action etc.
Edit: uploaded

What do you guys think ? I think I should have recorded it as a demo, then only make it as a video from there (the lag is very visible)
I suggest advertising on free game sites that's the way I have came to play a lot of the games I do today.
Just make a advertising bar and put a promo movie link to it that should raise your #'s a little. Or go public
advertise the game in gamer magazines a lot of gamers read those. Keep Tremulous alive and well i think this game will go down in gamer history Long live
:tyrant: TREMULOUS :tyrant:
I have a Question about the advertising of this game
I know that you have it on a lot of sites to download but
do you advertise on other free game sites as a link
to your promo videos i click on a lot of those to always
keep my mind open to all new or old gaming material.
promoting trem is stupid as of right now. What are we promoting? a game that has taken this long to release 1.2? People who come here will quickly leave when they find out about 1.2. Once 1.2 comes out then yeah prmoting will be easier and would actually work. Or promote when we have a set date as to when 1.2 will be released. You dont see gaming companys promting a new game w/o that game either being done or very close to being done and set to be released soon. As of now promotion is pointless.

You wanna promote this game, release a fucking update already. The problem with this game is that the dev's actually have lives.
+1
well, i saw an ad in wiki i think, and downloaded it pretty quick. i played for a few min, and got called "newb" and removed from servers so much it kinda killed the mood. advertising is nice, a friendly fan base is nicer. :-\
You will be getting called noob on any server or game. Just ignore it, but at the same time listen to advice and ask for it AND follow it.
Tremulous would promote itself if it weren't vaporware!
tremulous is a badass game it promotes itself
