Feel free to browse through the old topics, you're bound to stumble across some gems.  If you're looking for hands-on training, you should run by the "Dretch*Tsunami" server, and ask around, there's usually a few kind souls lurking there.  Or if the Dretches R' Us server has any activity, most of the people there will be more than willing to give you a hand.

Just remember, there's a search bar in the upper right corner of this forum, so if you have a specific question about something, chances are you'll find an answer just by searching the forum for it.

Good luck,
-Kaine

The quick beginner's guide to playing tremulous by janev:

Aliens.
- Aim for the head ---> Point the crosshair at the head.
- Do whatever it takes not to get shot ---> Dodge, hide, wallwalk, ambush
- Press q to evolve to a bigger bug ---> Bigger is better no matter what your mother told you.
- The dretch (smallest brown guy with 25hp) bites whenever you get close enough to a human. ---> Close the distance while applying the fiirst and second points.
- The little green guy is used for building structures and can not attack ---> Generally do not leave the base with this class.

Humans
- Put the crosshair on the alien(not teammate) and press the trigger (default LMB). This is where most people have the most difficulty. ---> Practice until your eyes bleed. /offtopic Has anyone else gotten that effect? /ontopic
- It does not matter if you hit the alien in the butt or the head. This is not jagged alliance 2. ---> Aim for the "torso"
- Buy new guns at the armoury --->Press Q and sell your rifle before buying a new gun.
- Do whatever it takes not to get bitten ---> Dodge, hide, fly, sit on a turret yelling come on (f default bind for taunting)
- Press tab and follow the guy who is killing aliens the fastest (kills/minute) and do what he does.

General
- Leave building to others until you understand the mechanics of basebuilding
- Spectate others(see humans point 4) to learn
- The gods of tremulous hate poor people so you will need to get rich by killing your opponents before you can get the bigger bugs or boomsticks.
- Read the manual and the strategy section of the forums

Happy Fragging

The best advice anyone can give you is just play.

As alien don't use basi, you'd just get killed really fast. Get used to wallwalking, hiding, dodging.
As human always get armor and helmet before a big weapon. Once you are good with rifle and shotty (dodge!) you'll be able to get more creds fast and can more easily learn other weapons. Don't use lucifer or pulse to defend. Try to always stay with a teammate.
In general listen to better players, and tell your team about what the enemy is doing (attacking, building outpost, moving RC/OM).

Spectating helps quite a bit too. ;)

Wrong.  (See post previous to yours.)  Janev just blew my mind... he hit all the basics while not coming across as condescending, and even included a little humor.  Well put Janev, I don't think anyone could have said it better.

Your just not thinking Kaine... where would he be if he memorised all those tips, but didnt play? He'd still be shit at trem, but if he plays, he'll eventually get better. Duh!

@yourface

Its boring though :P

I don't like your reasoning, amz. Yes practice will make you eventually better, but it's good to get a headstart with some useful tips  ;)

Yeah but it's not like you can just sit there and learn them by heart. Most people play a while, then read about it or ask what they did wrong, then play a little while more and so on. You can't take all the theory in at once nor is it useful to just jump head first, you need to mix both.

Besides, there's been some debatable advice mixed in with the useful stuff right here in this thread.

* Evolving to a bigger alien does nothing if you don't know how to use it. An experienced human can kill a newb tyrant with a shotgun, because the newb keeps missing and stumbling into walls and doesn't have the sense to run away when he's really hurt.

* The basi can be horrifyingly dangerous in the hands of a skilled player. And it only costs 1 evo. If the humans don't work together a good basi can absolutely own S1. A basi can wallwalk, can paralyse, can work like a mara and jump from head to head biting, is small enough to get by unnoticed yet has enough HP, can bite any human structure, its bite causes turrets to turn around slower etc. The basi seems slow because unexperienced players use it wrong (grab a human from the front, work alone, don't run away to recover when hurt).

* The advanced granger has a couple of means of fighting humans, it's the normal granger that can't do much. The advgranger can be quite useful in defending his base and he's actually expected to venture out of the base at times to stash away eggs or recover a lost base. His spit transmits poison (if it has it) and it will be mistaken for trapper spit, so often attacking humans will be looking around for a trapper and ignore the granger.
