Looks great for a first try although blocky (understandable) and I love how you noted what needs fixing. Keep going!

well

-Head seems unnecesarrily detailed.

- legs are 'WTFHUEG'

-body is to0 short and stumpy

-arms are too weak compared to legs.

-LEGS

and if you mean which program, it was done in blender. Rendered in blender too.

wow nice job! =D (esp for first time =O)

Looking forward to see more!

Also, make sure to keep it as blocky(maybe not the correct term...) as possible to fit the ugly hitbox model =P (I learned the hard way with a really long tailed one >.>)
If you dont know what I mean devmap atcs and do:
/cg_thirdperson 1
/cg_thirdpersonrange 300
/cg_drawbbox 1
then go as tyrant.

Also don't forget to not exceed 1000 vets (current trem limit D=)

I would recommend grabbing all the vertecies behind the front pair of legs and pulling back.

The legs are disproportionately large
The head is somewhat oversmoothed - it's a really inefficient use of polygons for the level of detail.
The clawed hands remind me of the alien queen

Well, that may be too high in polys. I'm not familiar with blender. Also note that such smoothness may make it difficult to uv map.

597 faces | 719 verts

The change takes no effect on the amount of verts/tris/quads and can be converted back and forth effortlessly.

It doesn't really affect the UVmap.

If Tremulous doesn't support the smoothing effect, it'll be fine without the smoothing part done. With a good uvmap, you won't notice a thing.

You need to make the legs thinner and have another visible joint. (take a look at basi/mara/goon/rant model with /devmap atcs, /g_alienstage 2, /give funds 9, /cg_thirdperson 1)
There shouldn't be polys connecting the higher tip of the legs with the body.
The legs should be a bit tilted not straight.
The body is too high off the ground compared to other aliens.
The hands should be redone. If you really want several claws, they should be side by side. They also shouldn't come out the front of the body.
Polys/quads on the head should be split along the middle of the head to make it less boxy.

Do you think this is supposed to be 1.2 tyrant replacement or something? It's his first time modeling and for that it's good.

Be kind of interesting if the game was modded so when humans die their weapons lie on the ground and we get some sort of human type alien that can pick those weapons up.

I've decided to take Archangel's advice and start over from scratch. (Hope it works)

I'll post again when I get my computer running again.

Anybody, please feel free to point out the major quirks or mistakes that you think I could do better next time.

you put a tail on it.
the other aliens have short tails, could be a good place to make yours stand out.
and on the first joint of the legs (the one that sits higher then the body) the division of them doesnt start until about where the body starts maybe you clould split it up a little higher

You do know that I'm starting over right? There's no need to explain your idea like I'm modifying my old model.

(I don't even have the old model anymore.)

If somebody could do me a favor and point me in the direction of a few good orthographic shots of the aliens, especially the dragoon and the tyrant I would appreciate it.

It would greatly help me in my concept art.

Again, anyone may feel free to give suggestions.

maybe this is a bad idea. but why model your alien after existing ones?
the only aliens classes that look similar in trem is the mara and the basi.
maybe you could make some sort of snake or flying vulture type deal : /
