I'm currently working on an advertisement for Tremulous, and I want to include a section on the variety of communities in Tremulous, but I know nothing about any of them, so if you are in a community and want it advertised, please post in this thread the following things about it:
Name of the community, general description of the community (such as if it is a competitive community, a social community, multigaming community, etc), the main language of the members of the community, where most members are from (if applicable), if the community has its own resources (website, forum, game server, voice chat server, etc) and what they are (ie, the URL to the website, the IP to the servers), and any other information that might be relevant.
I won't include all communities posted, I'll choose from posts based on descriptiveness and preciseness, and from those I will spend time with the community to make sure it wasn't fake information. In the ad, for the sake of brevity I probably will shorten the descriptions of the communities greatly, so there's no need to go too greatly into detail.
Thanks for the help!

does a small group of friends count? if so, then i'd like to advertise KinetiK clan >!<. we're pretty much a social clan that's made up of inactive players that can't devote their time to scrimming on a regular basis.
our website is http://kinetikclan.co.cc
feel free to drop by anytime :) everybody is welcome.

A bit of an overview for what it's worth.
I think you will find the biggest communities are are grouped according to some specific: server/language/geographic region/function/clan. These clusters of players are very diverse in how they play and how they think.
http://www.frappr.com/tremulous (http://www.frappr.com/tremulous) That link will give you a general idea of how the players are spread out. Even though most people have not added themselves to that map it is worth having a look at.
Most newbies wanting to join tremulous will probably meet with the clan/ server/region and language specific communities first. A natural effect of joining a server with a low ping. I will try to list some of the more active communities out there and maybe someone else will feel like giving some more info about them.
Europe: French, German, Polish, Spanish, Italian, Russian. There are other european communities but they they tend to just blend in with the other players and maybe form some sort of gaming community so they can communicate and teamwork in their native language. Many servers have an English only policy for chat.
USA: I am just guessing here but I assume they are grouped according to servers they frequent. Ping(region), skill level and server settings play a major role. Servers with many players include: all the servers with boxes and a letter, various clan servers, mg dev server that has the balance changes for 1.2. Not really my area so feel free to add stuff.
For both players from Europe and the USA there are lots of alternatives.
Australia: There are a few servers and Australian players out there and I am sure they have a community. Like the Americans I know very little about them.
South America and Asia: Both have some players that you will occasionally see on other servers. I do not think they have very many servers hosted in those areas. Brazil has a few. Not my area.
Beyond the above there people who are more interested in the open source aspect of tremulous and the coding. They are often not constrained by ping limits. Also not my area :>
This post was to try to get the ball rolling but we will see if it has any effect since most people in the northern hemisphere have more important stuff to think about this time of year. Protip* Exams and women in short skirts.
-
Thanks, I completely forgot about language and region! I'll go ahead and add that to my original post.
does a small group of friends count?
Yep, as long as there are people that new players can socialize with, it's fine.

K, I'll get to work checking out the newly posted communities!
Edit:
I've had a look at the sites, and here's a summary of what I'd like to see from these communities before I add them to the list of communities to put on the ad.
Kinetik: I read the threads related to Tremulous, it seems like none of the members play Tremulous anymore and that they merely look at it retrospectively. Could you start a thread or two about Tremulous and get some activity going on the topic of Tremulous? Overall, I'd like to see a little more activity from the existing members, even if it's just everyday conversation. It'd also be great if you could invite a friend or two to the site (and possibly Tremulous).
Strong Will: Your clan is a revival? There are only two members on the whole site. I'll need to see some activity before I'll even consider adding you to the list.
Rising Dawn: On the site I only saw about three active members, so if you could invite a few friends to the forum, everything else looks fine.
GameBoom: I don't see much of any focus on Tremulous, so new Tremulous players wouldn't really benefit from going here, I think. However, the site seems great for people who play or want to play a variety of games.
Right now I'm favoring putting Kinetik and Rising Dawn on the list, but first I'd like to see just a little more activity, nothing a few existing friends can't fix.

How about [AC]? We might as well include {NoS} in an ad with ours since we're in the process of sharing the same forum.
http://z7.invisionfree.com/The_Crash/index.php (most of our forum can't be seen without a registered account) Our URL might be changing within the next few weeks since we'll be sharing forums and also upgrading to ZetaBoards.
We're still separate clans but they spend more time on our forum than theirs so I thought it'd be a great idea if we shared the same space.
[AC] is a friendly noncompetitive leisure clan and next month it will be our 2nd year anniversary. We're an English speaking clan based in North America but we don't mind if people from other locations join, but they may have some lag issues when playing with us. The main reason our clan is still around is because of the community. However, we've lost many members over the last year. Usually because they have stopped playing Tremulous and have moved on to other things, or because they would like to join a competitive clan. We usually play Trem just for fun rather than for competitive reasons, and we still play because of the community. However, there's more emphasis on the community reasons now because I guess the game itself isn't as fun as it used to be after over two years of playing.
Since we're a leisure clan, we don't force members to play a lot or play for a certain number of hours a week. Because we're held together by community rather than being based on competition, the clan is very easy to maintain as a leader. With the free time I have, I make media such as comics or videos for the clan which {NoS} also enjoys.
As for {NoS} who we will soon share our site with, I'm not sure what I should say of them since I am not part of them and probably shouldn't be representing them. Their leaders, Face and Brain, have been great to have with us and we consider them part of our clan's extended family. They have made several maps for Tremulous including their map, Veddak, which won the the 2008 Tremcentral Map Contest: http://tremulous.net/forum/index.php?topic=8924.0
{NoS} is similar to us in that we are leisurely, noncompetitive, friendly, and are also English speaking and based in North America. We have been affiliates with them ever since their clan started about a month after ours.

Winter: I'll just look at AC then until someone from NoS decides to post.
Alpha Crash: I looked at the site and I'm glad that the site is active and has a variety of members, but I couldn't find much related to Tremulous; I found a forum dedicated to Tremulous, but saw nothing in it but sticky threads. How active is the community with Tremulous? I can't tell. If I overlooked forums/threads related to Tremulous, please point them out to me, but otherwise I'd like to see more Tremulous-related activity first.

Oh, sorry about that. Recently I've moved most of the old threads throughout the forum to another section called "Nostalgia Museum" (a subsection in The Basement where I move out of date topics to) since previously our forum sections were all extremely cluttered. New people were coming on the forum and necro posting everywhere since we had threads going all the way back to June 2007. We also spammed and/or went off topic in quite a bit of those threads too and since they were old, most of them were irrelevant to current clan events. I thought it would clear up the confusion if I moved these old threads somewhere else. Note that Tremulous related threads on our forum are sometimes in other sections as well such as our [AC] Trem Roster which is in the "Lobby" section.
Here are some links to Trem related topics I dug up:

I hope that's enough. There are way more but they're very old may even range from mid 2008 back to June 2007 when we started.
In the last month, we haven't actually posted any new threads that are Tremulous related. I think we've ran out of things to talk about. If there is a new Trem related thread on our forum, it's usually an activity check, an error/glitch someone has with the game, a question asked by someone new, or it's a clan video I post. We may also talk about Trem in non-Trem related threads since we go off topic a lot.

{NoS} is the most awesome thing of awesome to ever awesome.

Heh. I'll agree but you might want to elaborate so Kitashi has something to work with.

Uhhh, {NoS} for Nation of Stupidity, it has been around for about one and a half years. It is a social, modding/mapping community with about ten inactive members, and maybe two or three active ones. We are North America based, though we have some (inactive) members from around the world. We only use our servers when we are testing something, and our inactive forums have been spammed to death recently by our good friend, Entrophy: http://z11.invisionfree.com/Nation_of_Stupidity/index.php? (http://z11.invisionfree.com/Nation_of_Stupidity/index.php?).

Quite literally. Almost all your forum sections have been spammed with over 30 pointless threads each and it doesn't look like anyone has posted since.
-
Haha, I guess since NoS is joining the AC forums I can pair the two together, but by the sound of it, NoS alone would need increased activity. By the way, thanks for pointing that out, Winter; the lack of threads in the Tremulous forum makes a lot more sense now. I'll go ahead and add AC to the list.
-
Both NoS and AC are two very small groups of people who most of rarely play. Honestly, I would only include these if you can't find enough that are better.

Yeah, I agree. I thought I'd just give it a go since I saw the other clans that were posted here and knew they were less active or their communities were smaller. Even compared to [AC].
More people should post their communities. The current selection in this thread isn't that great.
-
face and brain count as many people. Every face has its brain. :P

LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL!!

The final list will only have around 5 communities, but for now I'm putting all communities that seem worthwhile onto a main list. As Winter said, more communities need to post here, otherwise I can only assume they don't want advertised, in which case these smaller communities will receive the advertisement. Who knows if this'll help anyone (communities or new players), as I've never run an advertisement before, but we'll see. In the meantime, I'll just keep working on finishing the ad and seeing who posts.
<offtopic>Speaking of finishing my ad, this (http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z143/Kitashi_hgd/ScreenShots/filesize.png) is what happened when I tried combining some videos from demos and didn't pay attention to settings on my video program.</offtopic>
Also, adding Inflicted Revolution to the main list (contacted me via PM)

hmm, I remember a certain Repentance being in [AC]. . . . doesn't that count for something? I mean, he DID dominate the game back in late '06 to late '07, and no one could keep up with his skills except for maybe A. A. Shade
-
Tremulous-Spain:
Just as it sounds, it's the spanish community. We have two or three servers typically where the spanish players play. We are about 20 people, all very active. We made some nice tremulous stuff (a graphical keybinder, a web to see the players and map live, a webchat to talk with the server, a mumble server that redirects to the team you are playing, etc...), but right now our dev's are "on holiday" so we aren't updating anything xD
Take a look at http://tremulous-spain.com though most of the community activity is the forum.
-
K, added Tremulous-Spain to the list. Simply out of curiosity, though, I'd like to know why some threads with only a few replies have over a hundred views.
-
Take a wild guess.

Repentance is still with us but apparently he's being a lamer. Whenever he plays, he uses a fake name and tag, and even if he does use his normal username, he doesn't wear the [AC] tag.
And his skills fail now because he's been playing Team Fortress 2 and Warcraft.
-
oh pfft
I haven't been on tremulous for like 2 years and I only remember the old timers
-
um...wintersoldier....i'm pretty sure repentance is w/us, under the new name of {H}Illidan. maybe you or I has got a poser in our clans?
-
Yeah, that's the other name I saw him with. You can have him if you want.
*removes Rep's admin privileges on AC forum and his AC member status*
heheheh
-
neither shade or repentance are "old timers" and repentance was never any good
-
only good old timer left is me.... its really boring being the best. it's also aggravating ppl always want to b on ur team and want evos and want to join ur clan, its like no, leave me alone u idiot. and then they get offended and cry to the admin and the admin is like wow stop complaining im not gonna do anything about it, hes the best player so go cry somewhere else, noob! and im like ahaha another noob that gets pwnt. same shit different day.
-
By the way, this is the new [AC] and {NoS} site URL: http://s1.zetaboards.com/AC_NoS/index/
-
Yeah, that's the other name I saw him with. You can have him if you want.
no, actually, you can keep him. he's not on often enough, although I have to admit he does know a hell lot about WoW even tho he plays DOTA, not WoW.
and yahoo, wtf are you talking about. From what I remember, he was a pro.
-
well then you're and idiot huh
-
Blatantly obvious statement is blatantly obvious.

There's two main servers in Australia. Tremwars and Game arena (GA). Nobody uses the GA forums though as they're hugley overmoderated, have only one section and most people don't even know about them.
The http://bamnclan.com/smf/ forums used to be hugely popular a year or so ago but they've absolutely died in regards to Trem related stuff now. http://www.vendetta-clan.com/forums/index.php is probably the most active forums in Australia that has something to do with Trem. Unfortunately like the bamn forums the Vendetta forums have died with relations to Tremulous material.
That leaves pretty much www.tremwars.com as the last active community/forum in Australia. We recently moved servers so we lost all our forum posts (they can still be viewed at www.tremwars.com/forums-old ).
-
Tremwars and Vendetta both seem to have an okay amount of Tremulous-related forum activity and active members, so I'll add them to the list.
For future posts, I'd like to ask that everyone post all services a community has, such as a tremulous, teamspeak, or ventrillow server, as well as the IP and port for such servers. It will help me out so I won't have to search for whether the community has them or not.
-
Vendetta has a Ventrilo server at 202.60.94.172:3817. The Tremwars server is at 118.127.16.226:30720
-
Thanks, Danmal!

I'm currently working on finishing up the first form of advertisement (informative BBcode). I'm currently including 5 communities: Fallin-Angels, Alpha Crash/Nation of Stupidity, Inflicted Revolution, Tremwars, and GameBoom. I'll either update this post or make another post when I'm finished and have published it on my site. I haven't finished the video yet, so I'll exclude it for now, but will include it when I do finish it.
If any of the information I post regarding communities is inaccurate, please post in this thread or PM me to correct me. I will continually update the ad, so any communities that wish to update/add information or would like to be added for consideration for advertisement should continue to post. Thanks!
Alpha Crash/Nation of Stupidity: Do you have any game/communication servers? If so, what are the IP's? I don't remember seeing any.
Edit: I'm going to replace V//endetta with GameBoom because V//endetta, upon further review, seems very inactive in Tremulous (both clans on the site), and GameBoom has many useful Tremulous articles (though I'm going to refer to GameBoom mainly as a reference site).
-
As far as I know, Fallin Angels is also highly inactive in Tremulous.
I know, I haven't seen an FA member in months, and the server is always empty.
-
Very cool!
We do have servers up once in a while, but they are home hosted and usually only used for development purposes; they don't host any real matches.
Also, thanks to Einstein, he has hosted us an ad-free SMF forum, no more annoying zetaboard! <3 acnos.imn2rc.com/forum (http://acnos.imn2rc.com/forum/index.php). Everything important is transferred over. :P

You're right, it's very inactive, but I've got three reasons for including it. 1) I'm a member of FA; 2) We're currently working on setting up a Tremulous weekend to get people from our other games to also try Tremulous; 3) We start games via TS seeing as no one wants to sit in the server waiting for random people to join.

Ah! I'll change the link!
Edit: Wow, I went to my site, clicked the log in link, and now my whole web host is down. *waits impatiently* I just waited for an hour to upload a file, which failed with 10 minutes left, and now my webhost isn't working just as I try to post my ad. Very annoying.
Edit2: My site's back up, yay. Now if only I could reverse that failed upload...
Edit3: Published the advertisement (http://kitashi.host22.com/?x=entry:entry090523-153859)! I encourage everyone to give suggestions on how I can improve the ad, as well as increasing the accuracy of the community information.

That should hopefully be the last time we move this year. 8)
AC has a server but it's much like NoS's server. It's home hosted and put up rarely, usually to goof off or record demos for a video.
I currently can't see the ad. I'll check back later. :P
-
Yeah, one of my friends on IRC pointed out that currently the site's blocked so that my new web host can inspect it. Guess I should have postponed posting it that way there wouldn't be this delay :\ Oh well, this site has more features for free, so I'm glad to switch, especially seeing as the one I was on is about to be sold, and rabble rabble rabble, stuff. Tomorrow we'll see if it's visible!
-
I got an email from my webhost saying their done with their check, so it should be good now.
-
That's awesome! :D
Note: In the image that shows each human weapon, the Las gun is labeled as a Lasergun. Not sure if that's what it's really mean to be labeled as....
-
Thanks! I should probably change it to lasgun; when I was making the image I went to autopilot and gave it that name XD
Edit: Changed the image to read "Lasgun" instead of "lasergun"
-
Looks great! Good job. :)
-
Thanks, Winter!
-
Really like it. Thanks for including our humble little community! :P
-
Edit3: Published the advertisement! I encourage everyone to give suggestions on how I can improve the ad, as well as increasing the accuracy of the community information.
Great job with the ad, I thought it was really neat to see all the different aliens/humans lined up like that showcasing all the weapons.
The only thing that I noticed need fixing was in our description you have our tag as IR, but its .!vR :P
-
Some feedback:
I don't know if you really care, but I think for people looking at Tremulous with a fresh eye should be able to see the weapons up close. Also, in the "Fighting" section, perhaps you could mention something about how important it is to work with your team? In the "building" section, you could possibly change the "building mode" part into "using a construction kit" or something like that.
Here is a link for the Linux and Windows downloads, but I'm not sure if it's what you're looking for and/or if you're going to need permission to use it.
I simply want you to consider this.

Thanks! I didn't actually use any tags, just abbreviations - I didn't want to run the risk of messing up tags, so I just said the whole name then an abbreviation. I'll go ahead and include the tags, however - they're good for identifying clan members in-game, so new players should be aware of who wears what.

You're right, I should emphasize the necessity of teamwork.
As for seeing the weapons up-close, I'm not sure how most people view images, but in most web browsers and image viewing programs, they can zoom in, and I think the image is large enough that zooming in won't ruin the quality.
As for my phrasing of things, yeah, I'll be updating that forever - I overcomplicate expression of ideas very frequently.
As for the Linux/Windows downloads, I have them as installers, it's just that I've got a 33KB/s upload rate and the files are 105MB, so uploading them takes about an hour and 10 minutes, and my file host only allows me to upload 50MB a day (so it allows me to upload the files once, then I'm over my limit), so with tons of random changes, the .zip is the only one I'm able to keep up.
Thanks for the feedback!
-
Fair enough, thanks.
