Title: Making maps in other programs?
Post by: MrFish on June 10, 2009, 11:34:58 pm
While exploring how to give models color, I ended up taking a video tutorial on how to model in Blender 3d

I noticed you can export things into .map files for GetRediant. Do you think it would be safe to do that or would it be best just to do the whole thing in the GetRadiant program. I think that if you made it in blender first it would have trouble being too hard to compile. What do you guys think?

Mapping in blender is mostly a novelty.

The basic workflow for making maps from models is:
Make the map in Blender, cut it into sections (think visportals here), then export them as MD3.
Import the MD3s into Radiant then caulkhull, clip and hint.
Build the map as normal. If the model division and hinting were done properly then it shouldn't be significantly slower than a non model based map.

There are some Q3A maps out there that were made using this technique.

All tools are lame before you've learned to use them well.
