Title: Sliding Upon Landing
Post by: Dracone on July 21, 2009, 07:48:13 pm
Had this problem for awhile now, and I'm a little fed up with it. Didn't know if there was a solution, or if it's just a part of the game, although no one I've talked to has the same issue.

Often times, more often than not in fact, I will pounce with goon, intending to land on a spot, and if I get shot while in the air, I will slide when I land. It's almost as if the knockback is applied AFTER I land, although these slides always go much further than the knockback would cause.

Example: I pounce outside at ATCS, intending to land 3/4 of the way down the side. A shotgun puts a shot in me while I'm in the air. I land where I wanted, a little ways from the wall, but I slide right into it soon as I do land.

It can also happen to me on short pounces, giving a human a huge opportunity to get even more distance from me. Anyone got anything to say?

Client side prediction gone bad? Server lag thus adding knockback after you land...

Replying here as a reminder to myself as this may be something to look into.

Can you be sure it's the getting-shot part that's doing it?

Sounds to me like the effect you get if you don't land after pouncing because you're technically not on the ground yet, like you're on some slope or are beng pushed up still by continuous knockback. To test out what I mean, build a structure near a slope and then pounce inbetween.

Answer me this. Can you jump again while you're sliding? If not then I'm probably right.

Here's a demo. You'll see it not happen sometimes, and happen others, although the demo is short. Maybe ten or twelve attempts. Still, it should be sufficient. Note that on every attempt, I pounced and took my hands off my keyboard. Might've shaken my mouse a little, but if so, maybe that could be something to note.

Bump.

I was just screwing around a bit, doing some mara movement practice, when I noticed the usual slide upon landing phenomenon I see. So I decided to make a pretty good demo of it. This was done with bots, and KNOCKBACK IS SET TO 0 (just making sure that's clear). I used marauder this time, to show that it is definitely not a problem with pounce. I threw in a number after every time it clearly happened.

Any way you can test if this occurs in SVN (or if that's too hard, tremdev)

Upon examining the demo in third person, I am venturing a guess that it has something to do with pmove, rather than knockback. (I could be completely wrong)
Try testing with SVN as Khalsa has suggested, or try an older QVM (perhaps something out of trem.tjw.org).

Edit: Out of curiosity, try setting g_shove to 0 and see if that impacts anything.

Out of curiosity, is this http://tremulous.net/forum/index.php?topic=11477.0 bug going to be fixed in 1.2? Still causes some frustration from time to time.

Well seeing as how it was never confirmed as being in SVN at the time, and I was also unable to recreate it, and there exists no bug report in bugzilla about it -  I would guess no.

I'm fairly positive I have managed to do it in the official servers. I'll try to test this when I have spare time.
