I am embarking on my first blender expedition and I'm calling it 'The Devivificator' (working title). The mission is to have a 'The Devivificator' model built and displayed in-game ASAP. If I can do that then I can make it look more flash at my leisure. I'll be updating this post as the project progresses.

I keep seeing it as a plastic bottle with some sort of encasing. :P Nice work though.

It won't look so plastic after it's textured though. Although it could be fun to make an alternative texture...

Next step is a little more iffy. I'm going to test-build some textures and also learn what I can do to get it in-game.
Animation is clearly going to be a huge task when I come to it.

you might want to leave the handle/trigger open to add some more shape to the weapon so it will not look like a bottle so much.
also, maybe its just me, but if the bullet chain is at the front of the gun, probably with the shooting mechanics, i don't know why it has a so big body at the back. if there is something interesting happening there ( spooky liquid? :-) ), you might want to show it at least with the texture.

All very good points and I will add interesting things to the model at later points if all goes well.
For now though I'm focused on my mission which isn't about making a perfect game gun but simply to design and implement it. I am nearing the limits of the explicit original design now and so that mission is in fact nearly complete. The only part left that I actually planned for was positioning it on the human's hand so I'm going to do that.
I deliberately made the gun simple this time because I usually aim too high (no pun intended) with these projects and give up half way through. So I'm not just learning how to use blender as I do this. I'm learning how to make good plans and stick to them.
Still, I appreciate feedback on the gun as a weapon as I'm aware that this very-quickly-thought-out design has technical issues. Why exactly have a chain that feeds from the gun back into the gun? :P I've tried to think of some reasons behind it other than 'because it looks cool', but I've not had much luck.
The best reason I can think of is that the chain is clipped on like a cartridge with the advantage of variable size and that spent rounds are tidily kept on the chain. The disadvantage being it's slightly more cumbersome and fiddly than a cartridge.
The grip and trigger have purposely been left out so far. For now the human's hand will just disappear inside the gun while I work out how best to position it.

It's by no means perfect.. or finished. One of the many things I need help with is the creation and using of shaders and textures. I'd also like to know how to use 'tags'.
Yes I know it's too big :P It's not difficult to change the size but it failed to work originally and I'm afraid to touch it now.

Don't be afraid to change the size. Blender is more afraid of you, then you are of it.

Could someone help me out in getting textures to appear in game? I don't know how to reference the images with md3s. I've tried just placing the images in with the file I exported but I'm not sure if the md3 script is accounting for it because it doesn't seem to work.

EDIT: Revised the shape of the ol' DevGun and now it looks less like a bottle! Turns out that stupid little barrel end that needed removing.

No. It isn't specifically designed to replace any weapon although it's funny you should mention chaingun because this is in fact much more of a chaingun than the chaingun is.
Can someone who has experience with modelling explain to me how to get my damn textures connected to this damn .md3?

Hmm make sure your weapon won't be too high poly. Tremulous is a LPL game. Maybe you should change the shape where the weapon will be held, to make it more realistic. I also noticed on your youtube short video that the normals are strange. Is it just me that looks bad or is it a real problem? Good luck.

I will admit, my attentions have recently been elsewhere and I've not worked on this model for quite some time. The main thing that interrupted the process was having trouble getting textures to appear on the model in-game.
For the most part, I'm happy with what I already managed to do with this project (getting it to appear in game) and I think if I were to do any more modelling, it may mean starting afresh, perhaps with a modelling program better suited to making md3s. I'll still use blender as I'm more familiar with it now, but I'll have to learn more about UV mapping and exporting file-types before any real progress can be made.
However, you've shown interest and for that I will toy with this model a little bit today and see if I can't bring the project to a proper conclusion. :]

I won't be adding anything to the 'devivificator' project till I'm able to get textures to appear in-game.

You're not the first to say that. :D I'm hoping it will start to look less like a water-pistol as development progresses. :P
It was named for the process of ablation whereby the outer bits of an object are forced off, much in the way a sand-blaster works. So this would be less of a super-soaker and more of a super-sander!
The destruction of any bodily function as a result would be deemed quite fortunate. (I didn't know about the medical definition :O)

I'm FAR from making it shoot cool stuff. For now all I'm doing is modelling stuffz. I'll let you know if and when I'm about finished with it.

i'm still missing a fitting handle/trigger a bit, while i understand its not so important for ingame use.
The handle is something I'm working on, but for now that little bit where his hand is represents it. As for the trigger, you might notice that the current guns in tremulous don't actually have triggers on the model either. I could make a texture for it or perhaps a higher poly model which includes it, but for in-game use it's not as necessary since the hand always obscures it anyway.
Just FYI, it currently has 400 polys.

Ah, well I wanted the large planer surface so that when it comes to texturing I could have that portion dictated by what I draw.
Also, the overall shape looks better now in-game.
But I have the file saved and could always revert if necessary.
Anyhow, the important thing is I'm trying to get busy with this stuff again.
