Title: Netplay with crappy internet?
Post by: Jack Bauer on September 14, 2009, 03:05:51 pm
Howdy, I was just wondering if there was ANY way whatsoever to speed up netplay with a crappy internet connection. And when I say crappy I mean CRAPPY. Anything to reduce lag at all would be great.

A good way to decrease lag is to buy better internet.

But if you REALLY need to increase it, try a pinghack or defrag your computer so all the files are closer together and easier for the computer to find. This way the packets of information get gathered quicker and sent quicker.

What have we learnt recently about bad advice?

What is the specific problem with your connection?  Latency or bandwidth or loss or what?

What are you talking about? The 'Disk Cleanup' option is a defaut microsoft program, like 'Paint' or 'Word'. You just go: Start-control panel- performance and maintenance-'Free Up Space On Your Hard Disk'. After that, do: Start-control panel-performance and maintenance-'rearrange items on your hard disk to make programs run faster'.

It literally tells you what it's going to do, I clean out my computer every two months or so.

The way files are organized on the disk have NOTHING to do with PING, LAG or LATENCY! Sometimes it is smarter to just shut up.

Well, the specific problem is.........dialup...
*hides face behind hands in shame*

Assuming nothing else is on the line, dialup should be able to play fine.

Usually lag on dial-up comes down to 3 things; the condition of the phone line, the setup for your modem, and network settings.

Shorten the distance between your computer and your Telephone Network Interface (TNI). This is the gray box (usually) on the outside of the building where the phone lines connect to your building's internal phone wiring. Find a phone jack that's close to that, and use a short (< 10 feet) phone cord to connect to your modem. Disconnect any and all other devices using the line that might add line noise, including other phones, fax machines, answering machines, satellite receivers (yes some of these do hook up to the phone line too), etc.

For the modem itself, visit the manufacturer's site, download and install the newest drivers and also flash with the newest firmware. I'd recommend that you take a look at the 56k.com site in their Troubleshooting (http://www.56k.com/trouble/) and Help for slow connects (http://www.56k.com/trouble/connect.shtml) sections. Your OS should let you adjust the rest of the settings for the modem, so do some experiments with them. Adjusting the port rate and compression methods can make a big difference.

Close or disable any programs and services that aren't essential. Disable your firewall while playing, or set it to not filter traffic from your client's executable, nor the port range(s) of the games you play.

Some of these might not apply, but here's some additional info on Quake 3 Connection Tweaks (http://ucguides.savagehelp.com/ConnectionFAQ/Quake3.htm). Adjust these values in the console (particulary rate and cl_maxpackets).

Good luck!

Do you have two lines in your house? If you do, you can set it so you upload on one line and download on the other, which should give you decent playing speeds.

One other thing, the modem itself can have a big impact on performance. If you have an internal modem, make sure it's in a slot which isn't next to another card, as that can introduce interference.

But, I'd recommend shopping around for an external modem to connect to a serial port. Check 2nd-hand shops, places like Goodwill for them, as they aren't hard to find. I've picked up a few U.S. Robotics externals for $5.

On a side note, external modems aren't always free from interference. Way back when, I had a crappy Creative Labs 14.4 external that picked up a local radio station when it was off-hook. xD

Well I think the main problem is the undergound phone line...anyway, I am usually on a laptop with an internal modem but I do have a computer with an external usb zoom modem. I had a couple us robotics modems but I dont know what happened to them. I also had a Cnet modem but it didnt work right...
