Title: Tremulous Brightness
Post by: frazzler on November 09, 2009, 07:09:10 am
The brightness function. As far as I know, not many people play with default brightness. If you have ever played humans before, you will know that a black tyrant hiding in a very dark corner = many dead humans. So you turn the brightness up. But then everything looks really really shitty. Lights on the roof seem to have an endless aura of energy. Lucifer cannons have gained a second purpose, blinding the rest of the team. I was wondering if someone could create a map or a mod or SOMETHING that would make trem look really good on default brightness. I hate not being able to see aliens in corners, but I also wish I didn't have to make the game look so damn weird instead. The walls of ATCS look like they're made of some kind of steel/cheese alloy. Dark areas that would normally make a good base or hiding spot have become those spots that you stop to stare at and go 'wtf? Shadows in trem?'. I can't quite think of a word for it, but tremulous should be brighter, but not so that everything looks like shit.

You seem to have forgotten what is between too dark and too bright. Or maybe your monitor is just crap. I use r_gamma 1.2 - 1.4 and it's all fine. Also just making the game brighter will reduce atmosphere. And maybe you should just forget trying to see everything when you are not supposed to and enjoy the game.

/r_gamma 1.2 to 1.5 seems to be optimal for most people.

I seem to recall there being some sort of software pusdo-gamma that looks hideous.
But however high I turn my gamma it doesn't look "bad", just washed out.

I use an application in Windows called GAPA (Gamma Panel, available on Major Geeks, iirc) that lets you assign hotkey shortcuts for different hardware gamma levels. I use 4 shortcuts: Ctrl+Alt+Shift+1 is 'normal', with gamma and brightness at their default values, Ctrl+Alt+Shift+2 is 'brighter', 3 is 'very bright', and 4 is 'maxed out'. Setting r_gamma in Tremulous overrides or resets these, so I usually adjust r_gamma first, setting it to 2.7 or so, and then will typically use my very bright setting. Only on some very dark maps is my 'maxed out' setting needed, like for the ceiling in the window room on Niveus.
