Title: Community Spotlight #1
Post by: khalsa on November 21, 2009, 06:23:20 am
From the Tremulous.net homepage (http://tremulous.net)

Welcome to the first Tremulous Community Spotlight! As some of you may already know, Tremulous has a large and enthusiastic community with many talented individuals. If you're not already a member, join the Tremulous Forums (http://tremulous.net/forum/) or pop into the IRC channel (http://tremulous.net/forum/index.php?topic=9268.0) to be a part of it!

Let's start this party off with one of my personal favourites, a short story by DeathSkull, "Tremulous: The Harder They Fall" (http://tremulous.net/forum/index.php?topic=11003.0). It's a fast-paced and tense depiction of the war against the alien menace, and well worth a look. Next up is a story by Hendrich, "Ignorance" (http://tremulous.net/forum/index.php?topic=12047.0)—hopefully the scientist can figure out what's going on!

The community also has several skilled modelers, check out "WIP: Alien Model" (http://tremulous.net/forum/index.php?topic=3701.0) by Taiyo.uk and {7}wrath's inspiration for a new tyrant model. (http://tremulous.net/forum/index.php?topic=11259.0)

(http://tremulous.net/media/files/tcs1-03.png) (http://tremulous.net/forum/index.php?topic=12265)(http://tremulous.net/media/files/tcs1-04.png) (http://tremulous.net/forum/index.php?topic=12074.0)(http://tremulous.net/media/files/tcs1-05.png) (http://tremulous.net/forum/index.php?topic=11930.0)

If you haven't seen any of Ira's Tremulous movies, take a peek at Spartakus (http://tremulous.net/forum/index.php?topic=12265), I am Tremulous Legend (http://tremulous.net/forum/index.php?topic=12074.0), and Tremulous: The Movie (http://tremulous.net/forum/index.php?topic=11930.0).
If you are interested in making your own movies, read Silver's guide (http://tremulous.net/forum/index.php?topic=12247.0) on recording and editing Tremulous videos.

(http://tremulous.net/media/files/tcs1-06.png) (http://tremulous.net/forum/index.php?topic=11179.0)(http://tremulous.net/media/files/tcs1-07.png) (http://tremulous.net/forum/index.php?topic=10794.0)(http://tremulous.net/media/files/tcs1-08.png) (http://tremulous.net/forum/index.php?topic=11510.0)

Spice up your desktop with a Tremulous wallpaper! Asvarox (http://tremulous.net/forum/index.php?topic=11179.0), Winnie The Pooh (http://tremulous.net/forum/index.php?topic=10794.0), and Karajus (http://tremulous.net/forum/index.php?topic=11510.0) provide some good examples.

(http://tremulous.net/media/files/tcs1-09.png) (http://tremulous.net/forum/index.php?topic=6555.0)(http://tremulous.net/media/files/tcs1-10.png) (http://tremulous.net/forum/index.php?topic=11386.0)(http://tremulous.net/media/files/tcs1-11.png) (http://tremulous.net/forum/index.php?topic=8699.0)

If you're getting bored of the boring old HUD, take a gander at the wide array of alternatives that the community has created in the HUD (http://tremulous.net/forum/index.php?board=21.0) section of the forums. Some of my favourites are by K-otic (http://tremulous.net/forum/index.php?topic=6555.0), Meisseli (http://tremulous.net/forum/index.php?topic=11386.0), and Volt (http://tremulous.net/forum/index.php?topic=8699.0).

(http://tremulous.net/media/files/tcs1-12.png) (http://tremulous.net/forum/index.php?topic=4905.0)(http://tremulous.net/media/files/tcs1-13.png) (http://tremulous.net/forum/index.php?topic=11139.0)(http://tremulous.net/media/files/tcs1-14.png) (http://tremulous.net/forum/index.php?topic=3088.0)
(http://tremulous.net/media/files/tcs1-15.png) (http://tremulous.net/forum/index.php?topic=6234.0)(http://tremulous.net/media/files/tcs1-16.png) (http://tremulous.net/forum/index.php?topic=1806.0)

Tremulous has one of the largest and most active mapping communities in the open source world. With hundreds of player created maps, it's tough to select only a handful for this spotlight, but I consider the following to be excellent representatives of the creativeness and dedication of Tremulous players:

Nano (beta4) (http://tremulous.net/forum/index.php?topic=4905.0) by Ingar
BlueDragon (http://tremulous.net/forum/index.php?topic=11139.0) by Superpie
UTCS (http://tremulous.net/forum/index.php?topic=3088.0) by Chompers
1984b4 (http://tremulous.net/forum/index.php?topic=6234.0) by Trak
Sokolov (http://tremulous.net/forum/index.php?topic=1806.0) by Lava Croft

Make sure to head over to the Map Release (http://tremulous.net/forum/index.php?board=5.0) section of the forums for many more awesome maps, which I wish I could list here as well.

Hopefully you've enjoyed this brief insight into the Tremulous Community, check this page soon for more news, updates, and spotlights as we gear up for the next release!

Hopefully you've enjoyed this brief insight into the Tremulous Community

I did. Thanks! :D
Also, does this mean tremulous.net is going to have a proper blog eventually with these kind of updates?

Oh I forgot to mention. If you want your _______ featured in the next spotlight, either post here, catch me on IRC, or email me the link to the appropriate forum post and some reasoning as to why :)

Can we suggest other people's work as well?

Yes, really it's just to remind me of all the cool stuff we have. The more I know, the more will get featured. Makes my life easier to have people send me links rather than me spend time looking through all the old threads for the good stuff. It took an amazingly too long amount of time to make this post so I'd like to minimize it as much as possible in the future without skimping on content.

I would have really loved more info on a trem 1.2 release..... rather than models that will likely never be used, maps that have been around for years but never get played and wallpaper that has 0.00001% affect on the actual game.... Not to take away from those who did all the above, I think its awesome, just not exactly NEWS though is it?

You're right! It isn't. It is, however, a community spotlight. It's good people get some of their work shown and I'm pretty sure the front page can handle both community spotlights and news without exploding.

Are there any arcade servers ATM?

And why should alternate clients be listed?  (Serious question)

Are there any arcade servers ATM?

I think some servers run the arcade mod on certain days/times but I don't think there is currently a dedicated arcade server. Anyway if we're going to decide things to showcase based on popularity then I guess rotcannon should be up there as well as the X servers.

And why should alternate clients be listed?  (Serious question)

Awesome new menus, cool menu sounds, GUID, auto-download, if statements in binds, translucent console, support for other OSs apart from windows/linux and a whole heap of extra shit that you can read about in the README/release notes. I doubt an alternative client will ever make the frontpage though.

EDIT: Support for .ogg as well.

standard client should support these features, imho.

They should but they don't because the devs chose not to release bug fixes. Even the 1.2 client will not support some of those features (.ogg support for instance).

Us aussies pile together to make 1.2 OUT NOW! NOW NOW NOW WE HAVE WAITED FAR TOO LONG AND SHOULD NO LONGER SUPPORT your tremulous games. Hurry up devs, you suck.

Yeah, sorry I should have been more clear. In the prebuilt windows clients .ogg support will not be enabled as I believe one of the devs doesn't want to distribute the .ogg dlls.
