Title: "as we gear up for the next release!"
Post by: FisherP on November 22, 2009, 07:45:47 pm
I don't see the need to gear up, just release it. I don't think that 1.2 could be publicized any more than it is now. If anything make the date of release known, lock it in give us something to really look forward to, not just more hype. The last thing this community needs it for the dev team to hype up the release of 1.2 only to have hopes dashed by some dev spotting a "gameplay" change that needs to be tested for three to six months before release. Sorry if I sound cynical but yeh, I've had my hopes up too high for too long, I still believe that if we see 1.2 out before Christmas 2010 we will be lucky.

But if they say a release date and then fail to release it then then your hopes will be dashed anyway. Release dates don't help much  :-\

WHAT? You want them to release a month from now? How about Thanksgiving (Nov 26 in U.S.)?

I'm not really worried about 1.2 if there will be such a thing.  :-X

"OK, guys! Lets play this game, then troll the forums screaming at the devs to make more, because I'm a greedy little pest, and I should get what I want, whenever I want it!!!"

1.1 is still fun and I think everyone should stop bitching and play the game, support it, and have fun. Oh and I'm not pointing names, so don't think I'm talking about you.

What's so interesting about thursdays and april 1st next year? sorry if I missed any little inuendos. And maybe the devs are going in google's footsteps and putting out an april fool joke? though that is very unlikely. personally I agree that the hype and speculation is unneeded, let it be released when it is released, at which point I get to trample you all again with my Tyrant,
"THEY CALL ME STOMPY" (does anyone get that reference?). though I do prefer a normal goon or adv maurauder... and the best class ever is the basilisk.

In one of the threads where people were asking about a release date, one of the devs (Khalsa ?) stated that the beta would release on Thursday, no mention of which month that would happen though.

I heard it was being released this coming Feb 29th.

If the release is so imminent that they are "gearing up" for it they must have an idea of when they can release even the beta. If they are worried about over-run of the date, add a month or two. Doing that will allow some breathing space. I do that sort of estimation ALL the time at work, when asked for a deadline of when I'll be complete, I guess at when I can be finished if I can work at it steadily, then I factor in all the interruptions... add a week or two for contingency and BAM out pops a due date.

For all those lost on the "Thursday" thing, it's a running joke. Whenever the devs were asked in the past, all they said was "Thursday", no commitment of year, month, or week. In other words, Thursday never comes, it's like saying "I'll post my resignation tomorrow", or "The check is in the mail"

I don't really even care when 1.2 comes out. 1.1 is enough fun for me.

gear up
v :  make ready or suitable in advance for a particular purpose
or for some use, event, etc; "Get the children ready for
school!"; "prepare for war" [syn: prepare, set up, ready,
          set]
To not "gear up" for release, would be to effectively announce that Tremulous 1.2 was released without providing prebuilt binaries or even branching. That might even preclude any code commits, since those may be done in preparation for a release. And, of course, no bug fixes.

Bolderdash, preping the binaries and performing the bug fixes are always an integral part of releasing software, get real. Gearing up can also be taken as accelerating as in the case of a car, as you accelerate you gear up. I know the devs have real lives, I know they are doing this themselves. All I'm asking is if people are touting that the release is almost here, name a date and start the hype after it's announced. We've already been told that it's getting close.

Meh, I can't be bothered anymore.

Marmite is the most awesome thing ever.

I eat it by the spoonful sometimes, just a shame it's so damn expensive.

Sure, like Thermite (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thermite) to thermonuclear (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thermonuclear).
