Title: How to make animated gifs with Blender
Post by: m4gnificent_b4st4rd on December 06, 2009, 05:59:44 pm
This tutorial is for linux users.

1. Install imagemagick with this command -
Code: [Select]
sudo apt-get install imagemagick2. Set Blender up to render animations to png images (or similar) instead of a video format.
3. Make sure the colour is set to RGB not RGBA.
4. Press Animate.
5. Go to the default render directory (this will be /tmp in linux) where you should find a lot of png files.
6. Type this command to create your gif from those pngs -
Code: [Select]
convert -delay 4 -loop 0 *.png animated.gif7. Enjoy your new animated gif.

Note - the delay setting refers to 1/100ths of a second. so in the example above 4/100th = 25fps.

Cool, all these things should probably go on the wiki somewhere.

Khalsa - I've added it to the wiki - Link (http://tremulous.net/wiki/Making_animated_Gifs_with_Blender).
I added a link on the Main page which takes you to the modelling page. On that page is a link to the Blender page. On the Blender page there is a link to the tutorial. I thought it made more sense that putting the tutorial link directly on the modelling page, since not all modellers use Blender. This way people can add their own 3D modelling program to the Modelling page.

iRa` - I'm fairly sure that would be possible. A map's .bsp can be decompiled to an ase file, which can then be imported into blender. When the ase is imported all the faces that were using a certain texture appear as a seperate model, which has the uvmapping intact. This means that each separate piece could be given a Blender material that links to the texture and enables it to be visible in renders. Once all the chunks have been set up with their own materials the map could be used as background scenery when rendering still images or movies. Combine this with my armature rigged marine model and you could make proper little films. This is something I've been thinking about myself, I may have a go at it.
