I've been having a lot of them, some worse than others.
~Ubuntu 9.10
~NVidia accelerated graphics driver version 185 (chip 6150 LE)
~ALSA sound
FIXED (see last posts). Pulseaudio causes startup crashes, sound and frame-rate erros in Tremulous and Warzone2100. Use "sudo apt-get remove pulseaudio" and a reboot to fix the problem.r
-
post up the console output.

Segmentation fault
This happens in both fullscreen and windowed, and is fairly random. This is what happens when it crashes in the beginning, not the sound/framerate error.

that resolution is a strange one
any chance of getting a backtrace
open a terminal and type:
cd /usr/local/games/tremulous
gdb ./tremulous-gpp.x86
then type 'run' in that after it crashes and returns to that window type 'bt' and post output
with a backtrace we can help you a little more
-
konzul@conzul-desktop:~$ cd /usr/local/games/tremulous
konzul@conzul-desktop:/usr/local/games/tremulous$ gdb ./tremulous-gpp.x86

It's ironic, because now once I run 'run' then gdb and trem lock up the system. The mouse pointer disappears and the keys cease to function, so I can't actually post the output of 'run' or 'bt' but I did watch the terminal spew stuff out, even though I couldn't paste it here.
From memory though:
----common initialization complete-----
[bunch of stuff here about opening ip sockets
.....................................
...............................
..........................]
System reports SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault
[some hex value here, can't remember it] ?? ()
(gdb)
then windowed trem gets stuck on the black screen before darklegion, and I have to hold the power button to power down and restart.
-
use run +set in_nograb 1 instead.
-
use run +set in_nograb 1 instead.
or you could do it this way too
change line:
gdb ./tremulous-gpp.x86
to
gdb --args ./tremulous-gpp.x86 +set in_nograb 1 +set r_fullscreen 0
theres also a way to make all this happen at once but i dont remember it
#Edit: would be good to disable fullscreen too updated my code for that
-
Okay, that worked, here you go:
(gdb) run
Starting program: /usr/local/games/tremulous/tremulous-gpp.x86 +set in_nograb 1 +set r_fullscreen 0

you forgot to do bt after it crashes

Above edited with new 'bt' ouput.

If you're not using bluetooth audio, try to run
sudo apt-get purge bluez-alsa
in a terminal window.

I'll try it, but what does that do/fix?
Edit: Nvm it's already at the newest version.
-
Hmm never had that output before so i cant help you this time :/
it *should* have given function names of the last functions it was using.
maybe someone else with more experience coding can help ya cause i wouldn't know where to start fixing this one
good luck

Damn it. (thank you)
**Monthly Bump** 4/3/10 This problem still affects me, and is quite annoying. As a side, I have discovered that the same problem occurs when I play Warzone2100. Framerate will drop by half, and all game sound will be switched out with a singular static sound (this sound is identical to the sound I experienced in tremulous). However in that game it comes and goes during actual gameplay, seemingly randomly. In tremulous, it always happens at startup and clears after 1-5 mins. Will provide any info you ask 4. Thank you!

I notice you said ubuntu 9.10, and you said ALSA sound. Did you remove pulseaudio, if so how?
-
I most certainly did not:
konzul@conzul-desktop:~$ pulseaudio --version
pulseaudio 0.9.19
-
<mechanic voice> Well that's yer problem raight dere</mechanic voice>
I can say with some certainty that the sound problems are likely due to pulseaudio (cause it sucks). I also experienced static, crackling, and the sound just going out during tremulous until I removed it.
You can probably test it by
rm -r ~/.pulse
Then logout and log back in - see if this "fixes" your sound issues

rm -r ~/.pulse
Then logout and log back in - see if this "fixes" your sound issues
OMG OMG OMG IT WORKED! Tremulous no longer crashes at startup, no more static, and I have an increased framerate! Thankyouthankyouthankyou [stoops to kiss the ground at Khalsa's feet]
However not with what you supplied, I had to use "sudo apt-get remove pulseaudio" then reboot.
Under Pulseaudio, trem would crash or static 4/5 times I clicked the GPP icon.
This or something similar should get stickied for Ubuntu users.

Well unfortunetly for me (and maybe for you) I had to do a lot more than apt-get remove pulseaudio to get all my things to work (laptop). Soon as I removed PA lots of stuff stopped working and I couldn't really control volume anymore. The following are the steps I stumbled through to get it all working (not simple).
sudo apt-get purge pulseaudio gstreamer0.10-pulseaudio; sudo apt-get autoremove
sudo apt-get install alsa-base alsa-tools alsa-tools-gui alsa-utils alsa-oss linux-sound-base alsamixergui esound esound-clients esound-common libesd-alsa0 gnome-alsamixer
gstreamer-properties
sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list
(I used vim, but gedit is easier for you)
and replace all instances of "karmic" with "jaunty"
then do
sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude remove alsa-utils_ alsa-tools_
sudo aptitude install alsa-utils alsa-tools asoundconf-gtk
sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list
and switch all the jaunty back to karmic
sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude hold alsa-utils
sudo aptitude hold alsa-tools
Then I downloaded some scripts from here: http://www.glonek.co.uk/alsa_volume.tgz and extracted them to /usr/local/bin
sudo aptitude install python-alsaaudio
sudo aptitude install python-eggtrayicon
Now do the following:
1. Go to Startup Applications and set the following to start with your system:
/usr/local/bin/alsavol.py
/usr/local/bin/volbar.py
2. Go to Keyboard Shortcuts and Add 3 new shortcuts. Choose something for the name. For the command type in:
/usr/local/bin/alsa_master_up
Then click on the keyboard assignment to assign a key shortcut and then press the Volume Up key on your keyboard.
Repeat for:
/usr/local/bin/alsa_master_down
/usr/local/bin/alsa_master_mute

Good to see you got it working
wow it seems like any *buntu issues is usually solved by removing pulse(why any distro would keep something that seems to have so many issues is mind-boggling)

@Khalsa wow looks like you had a nightmare. I use a desktop btw, a modified 2006 compaq presario sr2013wm consumer grade
Edit: really embarrasing, I actualy had to use your info, cus sound control dissappeared. Still, small price to pay for the performance increase in my favorite game.
