I think it's Dream Theater. Discuss here. :)
-
Dream Theater is shit.
All Shall Perish is better in every manner.
We Versus The Shark is better if you're going for pure technical skill.
[Edit: I forgot Chotto Ghetto too. ]

The london symphony orchestra.

OH GOD THANK YOU!
I've been searching for that song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GlENwK26Ufk&playnext_from=TL&videos=F-tKws_VS-c) some months ago, and couldn't find it. Thanks again! :D

Back in topic ;
The Dillinger Escape Plan (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mHcYDlRomeM&feature=related), not really my taste, but people say they are skilled. meh.
Protest the Hero (http://listen.grooveshark.com/#/s/Heretics+and+Killers/2sFBeT), more accessible.
And search for bands labeled as math- if you want skilled bands.
Also, Aphex Twin (http://listen.grooveshark.com/#/s/Vordhosbn/2vy2fF) (proof (http://blogs.sun.com/plamere/resource/aphex%20twin.jpg)), Sonic Youth (http://listen.grooveshark.com/#/s/Rain+King/1OVyvo) (inb4 modern band), God is an Astronaut (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Rr89FCGhEs)...
PS: You are free to flame my musical tastes.

LOL @ pics, found a DEATH METAL band that has a very talented "screamoist" (? idk what you would call it) They're called Into Eternity, to understand how talented it is, watch the Music Videos. Not really my "taste" but its "good" i guess you could call it. And Dream Theater is still tops. The EARLY Dream Theater when they were very progressive, with all of their album long songs and intricate works (of art). o.-

Troo there.
If you want technical skill I recommend Here Comes The Kraken and Nile.
If you want music skill, metalcore would be the place to go. Technicality combined with musicality and metal.
All That Remains, Lamb of God, As I Lay Dying.
As far as musical talent goes, none other than Bach, that man will take you on a journey.

Worst band ever.
But it's a party in the USA.
Woohoo Miley Cyrus.
-
Technical skill? Tough to tell, really. Sevendust has got a full set of very talented and experienced members.

Modern can be interpreted in many ways....
Dream Theater? Now they I would say are Iron Maiden and Def Leppard rip offs...
Many modern bands are just ripping off sounds PERFECTED years ago... By the greats like, Metallica, Godsmack, Black Sabbath, Pantera, Slayer, Anthrax, etc..
So in answer to your quetion... The best modern band is Metallica, as they brought what these young punks have been destroying to life and mainstream in the 80's..
-

After reading your message, I think you are obviously a troll who just seek hating from the others.
Old bands are old bands. Saying that many modern bands are rip off of older bands is like saying that Tremulous is a bad rip off of Gloom.
Young Punks have destroyed life and mainstream music in the 80's ? Yeah, and that's why good (off course it depends of the pov) bands like Sonic Youth, My Bloody Valentine, Kraftwerk and Joy Division have post-punk influences.
Metallica best band ever -> ;D. Everybody knows it's Miley Cyrus.

There your wonderful grammar.
And sorry for answering the thread... You wanna hate me for stating an opinion about music that is your maturity level... After all, what do people expect in a thread about music? Just lauds about Miley Cyrus, the Jonas Dweebs My Chemical whoever...
Old bands are old bands. Saying that many modern bands are rip off of older bands is like saying that Tremulous is a bad rip off of Gloom.

Please learn to read... I said and I quote"
The best modern band is Metallica, as they brought what these young punks have been destroying to life and mainstream in the 80's..
Let me break this down for you Cyrus fans...
I said..
1> The best Modern band is Metallica
2> They brought what these young punks are destroying TO LIFE AND MAINSTREAM IN THE 80's
Which means = Metallica brought this type of music (grunge, thrash, heavy metal, whatever you wanna label it as) to life and mainstream success in the 1980's. And these new geek bands are destroying it.. Misquoting me to prove your point only makes you look stupid... No offense..
Yeah, and that's why good (off course it depends of the pov) bands like Sonic Youth, My Bloody Valentine, Kraftwerk and Joy Division have post-punk influences.
Sorry but your little bands there have got nothing... Metallica put out another album just last year, And they still outsold them. Death Magnetic... You kids need to look this type of thing up, maybe listen to some of these 'older' bands you say are so terribly old and see how these 'modern' dweebs took their sounds from the real bands back in the good ol'days.
-
Crappy topic from the start, but you guys pretty much set it on fire. GJ
-
Its not my fault answering a question looking for opinions was so misunderstood... I respect peoples opinions... But not when they twist mine to prove apoint...
Childish lol

Your failure to articulate does not mean an attempt to fail to comprehend, and it's quite silly to toss out insults when you can't make yourself understood.
That is the childish thing.

Uh, Tremulous *is* a ripoff of Gloom.

Ups, I think that what I wanted to say was "modren bands are bad rip off of older bands is like saying that Tremulous is a bad rip off of Gloom".

This shows how large your musical culture is.

Sonic Youth was formed in 1981, Joy Division in 1976, Kraftwerk in 1970.
Metaliclol was formed in 1981, like Sonic Youth. And I don't think a trash metal band could influence new-wave bands like Joy Division or Kraftwerk, especially when this band was formed after them.
I like old band and I never said they were "terribly old". My grammar is not perfect, yeah, sorry for that, but whatever, you can understand what I say, can't you ?
-

Read it...yes... but easy to misunderstand, but thats ok ;)
This shows how large your musical culture is.
Well when the truth is out there and you wish not to see it that is your problem. I listen to a huge range of music, just no ghetto shit.
As far as you comments about the other bands being older etc,... and your point? I grant it your bands may be older, true, BUT they did not bring the type of music to the mainstream masses... It was Metallica and Slayer that did that. Before that the majority of rock listeners listen to glam rock... (Motley Crue, Def Leppard, KISS, ETC) Metallica was after a couple of those little New Wave geeks you mentioned, but they were the one to gain the monster success, the notoriety, and the staying power that is Metallica. So, excuse me for showing that to you, bu they have the success and the records sales to back me up...
You wanna listen to New Wave? I dont care thats your choice... But when they are not really 'the most skilled bands EVAR<<<<People cant type any more I swear LOL It will be pointed out.
-
It's boring to flame with you.

People cant type any more I swear LOL
Yes, the more I read your posts the more I discover that. :P

Yea...
As for your main point... Commercial success does NOT equal skill.
-
Yea...

True, but the sill is evident by their staying power IMO..
Yes, the more I read your posts the more I discover that. :P
:police:
I was talking about the way kids use 'liez,' 'intarwebz' and all these other non existent words... But thanks for being a grammar nazi to me LOL
It's boring to flame with you.
I know, not slinging useless insults, childish name calling, and a string of 4th grade style fuck yous. Just stating an opinion clearly. I dont expect YOU to find that interesting... Is this more your speed------ Metallica rox!! FTW!! But seeing as I have a brain capacity larger than that of a gnat, Excuse me for talking to far above this level, which apparently you excel in. ;D ;D
-
1> The best Modern band is Metallica
Thanks for the opinion. Apparently what you say must be true and anything different must be wrong. :)
2> They brought what these young punks are destroying TO LIFE AND MAINSTREAM IN THE 80's

Everything ever made, whether it is in music or elsewhere, is recycled back into culture somehow at one point or another. You're trying to tell me that Metallica was this amazing group of artists which created a sound never before heard by man? Puh-lease. Saying that the new bands are destroying a genre (AN ENTIRE GENRE MIND YOU) of music is entirely pointless because music is constantly evolving.
