Title: Stuff just dissapearing...[SOLVED]
Post by: A Spork on March 24, 2010, 02:59:39 am
So...yeah....
Basically, I have a wall and half a pile of crates, that I haven't touched in a couple weeks that just randomly disappear ingame now, depending on where I'm standing changes how much disappears.
And the floor in that room just started doing the same thing too.....

help?

Code: [Select]
<Kromeh> Too bad spork left...
<Kromeh> Could have told him that duplicate planes = nodraw...

Perhaps this helps?

Duplicate planes = two objects in one spot right?
cuz I checked that...

So this only happens while in game and not in Radiant? Could you maybe take a screenshot or two to better show what happens?

I think I've had this happen to me a few times before, but I can't remember why...

Just ingame....

in radiant

Just outside of the room

in the room.

I guess this is a VIS issue. Could you show what it looks like in radiant with _only_ details hidden (Take such in-game screenies with r_clear 1)? Are there any errors/warnings during compile? Have you made everything that should be detail into detail?
The quickest way to solve it would be to post the .map tho.

Everything that should be is detailed.....no warnings

Warning: extreme amounts of overlapping brushes detected!
(not sure if this is the cause yet, probably is)
EDIT: DO NOT USE THE FKIN HOLLOW TOOL. IT MAKES ALL 6 SIDES OVERLAP.

Nothing wrong with the hollow tool, just be sure to use it right.

It is imo faster to create 6 sides of room separately, than to hollow and then fix each one by one, making sure you don't miss any... Better to do it right the first time instead of getting a mess that you have to clean up.

Wait what?
Where do I have a whole crapload of brushes overlapping?
And I only used the hollow thing as a starting poit for a couple rooms, coulda sworn I fixed the overlapping though....

In the room with boxes: the broken wall/door/whatever has 2 overlaps, a thing on ceiling above boxes has 2 overlapping. Just outside the room: ceiling corners. On other side of the broken wall the sloped floor overlaps with wall on one side. The box around the whole map each corner. The smaller box around most of the map has loads... etc. These are just the ones I took time to find and list. In many places you have more detail stuff overlapping.
Detail brushes overlapping shouldn't cause VIS problems, but can cause texture problems IIRC.

Basically start selecting everything and move the camera around. Imo the easiest way to get rid of all, is to lock textures, move a section of the map out (use largest grid size), fix it, next section.
You also have some things that should be detail but are structural: the wall with door behind the boxes should be detail, with a caulk structural wall behind it. Same with curved ceiling above boxes.

EDIT: All your curved walls/ceilings are spsed to be detail. Especially the broken curved ceiling... And the room behind broken wall from the room with boxes (and there is a tiny tiny weird angled structural brush in there...) When you compile, you also get a .prt file which you can load with plugins->prtview, then toggle 3D/2D portals. The alien base has some major overlapping brushes near the entrance to box room...

Uniq: I don't particularly need you to bash how I do my mapping, plus, this IS an alpha, stuff is gonna change.
I also don't see ANY overlapping brushes in the room in question.

Anyone got some useful help?

If I were in your situation I would

A) Select the a brush, delete it, and see if there is another brush in the way (ie you may have tried to copy a brush then forgot to put it somewhere so its 'stuck' inside the other brush)
B) Put a box around the map and make EVERYTHING in the map detail except the box, and see if you get the same error
C) Try to recreate one of the walls from scratch again (without using hollow) and see if it stuffs up as well or not
D) If all that fails, Id recreate the area from scratch, the second time around is usually easier anyways

A) Nope, no dice
B) Hmmm....that fixes it....although it causes other issues.....(I can hear and sense the human base throughout the entire map >.>)
C) I didn't make that hall with hollow >.>
D) I'd rather not....but I suppose that may be my only choice...

You have the same problem I had. Make the area that you can see through detail brush(s), and make the rest structural (well what needs to be anyways).

Since you couldn't find any, I pointed out where they were. But:

I also don't see ANY overlapping brushes in the room in question.
You can't really be serious... I'm estimating your map contains over a hundred instances of overlapping brushes considering what I've seen. Just near that room I found tens. Not that many IN the room, but anything in line of sight can affect it.
I removed a few overlapping brushes and the problem is fixed. I'm not sure which one(s) were the culprits, but here's what I can remember doing in about 3-5 min incl 2 compiles and quick tests: Make the door pieces behind boxes not overlap in middle, make them and other angular brushes on that back wall detail and make a structural caulk brush behind them. Make curved ceiling detail, extend some brushes behind them so the room would still be sealed. Change walls/ceiling outside the box room (on the side with stairs) to stop brushes from overlapping. Remove 2 overlapping detail brushes under ceiling above boxes (part of pipe supports). Remove 2 partially overlapping (not 2 overlapping with each other, but with 2 other brushes) detail brushes on floor of the 'broken' wall, to  side of boxes. Change a couple of floor brushes under the patch tunnel between box room and alien base. Change that tiny brush which is part of a metal thing sticking out of wall in the patch tunnel into detail.
To find overlapping brushes you might need to select some, and move the camera. If their textures are aligned, they won't show up otherwise.

Ok, cleaned up the tunnel, made the door behind boxes detail, all is happy happy joy joy now.
