Title: What does the switch to x-box mean for the future of trem?
Post by: SlayerN on April 01, 2010, 02:42:16 am
In the latest news for the game it sounds like the Dev's are closing support for trem on all computers and making it an exclusive game for x-box live. I really hope that this doesn't happen because 1.2 was finally looking like a great game and now it may never come. My only question is why, is the player number too low or does dark legion just need tremulous to start making cash, either way I would still like to see trem continue on the internet and not switch over to x-box where i fear it will become a easier and less competitive and challenging game. Am I getting the general idea of the lattest news or did I miss something important?

I will let Timbo post his public reply to this before I go into a full rebuttal, but needless to say MANY of the rest of us devs are NOT happy with the direction Timbo chose to take when Microsoft first approached him some months ago.

Our response is here: http://tremulous.net/forum/index.php?topic=13124.0

Sadly, I wish this could've gone public a much longer time ago.

Looks like Microsoft will be needing a few developers (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KMU0tzLwhbE)

If the devs chose to do so, it is their property. Timbo has worked very hard on this project for years, and now he really needs to pay off his apartment loan payments (or so he said on IRC) so I don't see why he shouldn't earn some cash on this.

AFAIK, if only more people had donated to Tremulous, he might not have needed to close off the computer version, and switch to XBOX, and IIRC, if more people quickly donate, he may still be persuaded to not close the PC Tremulous.

Although it is sad to see official support for open source tremulous die, it is good to see that development will still continue to improve the game even if it is only going to be available on xbox live which I don't have or plan to get anytime soon. But...

There is still an open source community, right?
Tremulous will still be playable on PC as it always was, right?
Other developers can still contribute to and improve the current open source version or go and make an open source fork or whatever, right?
There will always be servers, modders, mappers, etc, right?

I'm pretty sure PC Tremulous is not going to die just like that.

I didn't read any of your post so shut up if I am wrong, but I understood at the start, that this is just an april joke. BORING!

EDIT: even If it isn't, then I don't care, cause I don't have an Xbox

wait does that mean single player tremulous?
at least instead of a 400 players it actually might increase to alot more.

If you want to wait until it's 1st April in every time zone then you're going to be waiting a long time.

When it ticked over into the 1st in Honolulu (http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/city.html?n=103) it was already going into the 2nd in Kiribati (http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/city.html?n=274)  (Funnily enough, the two are quite close to each other...)

When I first read this I was like oh noez but glad to see that this was, (hopefully) an April Fools joke. If Timbo actually did need to do this to pay off loans then by all means. It would be good to see trem actually reach out to the mainstream but it would be a sad day for PC users :<.

Hypothetically, if this isn't a joke then the trem community will more than likely drop from 400 to maybe 20 instantly 'cause I'm sorry, but Trem just isn't good enough to go out and buy an xbox just to play it.

Well, i already own an xbox, however i refuse to support tremulous on the xbox for many reasons (most of them being playability and the closed source-ness).

Going by the Wikipedia page, the idea of tremulous is at least 4 years old. Four years of people enjoying a completely free and open source game that can be played on just about any pc. Cutting to the chase, Xbox is where games go to die. I personally cant think of an xbox game of the same age that i could pick up and love just as much as tremulous (let alone an xbox game for free). On the second note, now that Microsoft has their hands on it, i highly doubt that tremulous will be the same game anymore. Tremulous 1.1 took some time for me to begin enjoying, mostly because it took some time for me to refine my skills, and thus i defined tremulous as the game that rewards time and effort. Microsoft doesn't want to make a game that takes a long time to get good at, too many people will quit within the first month of playing. Most likely, Microsoft will change tremulous enough to make it easy to pick up and play straight away, and im guessing that the new alien class & the new human what-ever-it-is will be the easy class to play and get a million kills. Thats not tremulous.

Xbox is a wonderful machine, but tremulous has no future on a console.

Extremely unorganized paragraph, fueled by rage. Timbo's choice to move to the xbox will now conclude my last post on these forums. Good luck.

I can't believe just how stupid some of this community is, to not recognize something like this on April 1 as being an April Fools joke.  Unreal.

Notice that the announcement for xbl trem was on April 1st. That date, of course, being April Fools day. On April 2nd their 'partnership' with Microsoft was broken off.
IT WAS AN APRIL FOOLS JOKE!
But, I was kind of disappointed. I actually signed into xbl that day to try to download it. I was really looking forward to it. I think that if tremulous was released on the X-bbox, it would be open to a much wider audience of people. Especially considering as Tremulous does almost no advertising whatsoever. I was really looking forward to trying out the control schematics and the new aliens and humans. It actually seemed like it could happen!

Well, I guess that just goes to show how well they pulled off this April 1st prank.
Good job Devs.
