Title: Things for 1.2 I have noticed (minor)
Post by: nubcake on April 06, 2010, 03:32:36 pm
All of the below is my personal preference and from what ive seen on the official trem Euro server

1) Instead of joining as Unnamedplayer, I joined as my RL name. Im guessing people are no longer unnamedplayer but C:/users/computername?? Anyways, im not sure what the go is there, but I wouldnt recommend it, as its kind of a breach of privacy (I have nfi if this was just me or 1.2 is programmed that way...)

2) When I minimsed trem the game wouldnt allow me to full screen. This maybe just a beta glitch, but i had to ctrl_alt_del to close it and reopen

3) The game opened at 640x480 (may have been 800x600, but it was very blocky). Some gfx cards on laptops wont support this resolution (akaik) and the game should start by default at least at 800x600

4) The standard GUI from Euro server was very intrusive, I much prefer the standard HUD. Perhaps you could include a HUD menu in options so people dont have to fiddle with settings to try and install a new HUD?

5) Granger spit is weird, it looks like its 'floating' for a split second before it lands. I personally dont like it (but w/e)

Thats about all for now, gameplay wise I cant really judge till I get used to it.

On the plus side I love the option to download from server/website. Alsothe news option is a nice additional which will hopefully get newer players to join the community

no fucking information?

1) agreedios. didn't notice this, but that IS a breach of privacy and i'm not sure why they did that (if, in fact, that's the way it is). imo default names should be dependent on the server. i think that'd be a bit hilarious.

in response to 3): you can set launch resolution outside of the game. but, yes, convenience is nice.

To back 1) up:
The first time I ran the 1.2 GPP my default name was set as the computer users name

1) Instead of joining as Unnamedplayer, I joined as my RL name.

This was also the case on some 1.1 servers.

It's not up to the server, but the client.  Newer clients set the name to whatever your PC tells it your name is on first run.  You can change it.  And it's the name you set on your user account, the one that's attached to word docs, and all sorts of other crap.  And of course you can change it.

IMO on first run it should pop up a thing with a few options, to set name and resolution etc etc.

I think for 2) all you have to do is right-click and hit restore. I have the same problem when I minimize Trem, but then again, I play in windowed mode.

Yeah, I know the name is optional, but alot of new users wont be happy, esp when you get alot of new guys who dont know how to change name. Also, same goes for resolution. I have to tell someone about once a day how to turn graphics up. I like that idea David.

Also Demolution, I dont get the problem in 1.1 and when I right click to try and restore it teleports my mouse cursor to the top left of the desktop

That's probably the best solution for 1), but I don't think it's any really issue. I remember playing with "Max" bitching about how the fuck this game knew his name though :P

Who cares about, "ZOGM TREMULOS NOES MY FIRS NAME!1"?  Paranoia is so 90's.

No it is a breach of privacy, your name/computer name shouldnt be displayed. I dont like people knowing my name on Tremulous. I also know ALOT of people agree with me.

it breaches your privacy as much as a word document that has tagged your current username on it or anything else that uses usernames. i dont really see the privacy issue if you have an issue with people seeing it make sure you go set your name before playing

As I said, alot of users dont know how to change name when first starting to play a game. Its just as simple if not easier to just assign a random name. Also, with your example you assume that people will upload a word document...

Good idea David. A box that pops up the first time you run the game, where you can configure options, would be nice.

Most apps nowerdays auto-set your name.
If you don't want them too, don't tell windows your name.
And do people really click play before options?

Not for an online game they dont... and not many people will have an inkling of how to change your computer name. And yes people REALLY dont click options...ever.

If they don't know how to change it, why did they set it in the first place?  You're computer isn't psychic, it knows your name because you told it, for the express purpose of it telling apps so they can auto-fill it places.  So really everything is working exactly how the system was designed.

It's not 'for the express purpose of it telling apps so they can auto-fill it', it's for multi-user computers, so people can recognize/sign into their own account. And many people never use their real name on the internet, while they ofc use it on their (family) computer.

I could have sworn XP had a separate user name and real name bit, but win7 is all I have to test now, and it doesn't seem to.  Meh.

Come on, people post dozens of pictures of them and their friends/family/random people without even asking them for permission. When you see a paper with your name written on it because you won some contest in school do you accuse the guy who put up that paper for privacy breach?

The startup window where you could change your name and basic options like resolution is a good thing but if that ever happen, I doubt that would be meant as a solution for this "issue".
Title: Re: Things for 1.2 I have noticed (minor)

Even more bullshit. If I went to a public contest with my real id, then ofc I can't complain... And not everyone posts pictures of themselves on the net. And *almost noone* wants their facebook account associated with their trem account. Don't make this an 'opt-out' feature. If someone really wants, they can always change their in-game name to their real name.
IIRC XP had no separate option for user name and real name.

I wouldn't call this a privacy violation, as lots of places use your username to refer to you, and every game I've played that does not default to null uses that as the default (though most do have a pop-up box to confirm this).

Good lord.  It's just your first name.  If your first AND last name was shown as your IGN, it might be something worth worrying about.  The earth revolves around the sun, not around you.  No one cares what your first name is.

Not your first name it could be what ever your pc was named (e.g Golbern family Computer). Im just saying for something so simple as changing a variable it could be revmoed and save a lot of hassle

It's username not computer name.  So it'll be "bob" or whatever you type to login.

It could easily be full name.

Who wants to type there full name every login?

At least on XP you have the option to not type name at all, just click on the name/avatar thing and enter password. I'd guess every modern OS has that option.

And anyone who cares about security that little probably doesn't give a shit about their name being known.

Probably != definitely. And security in your home != privacy on the internet. Please give at least a single *valid* reason for keeping that 'feature'.
Also: who here uses their _exact_ computer username in-game (without colors, tags, etc)? And what if the user name is registered? Is giving an error that 'the name is registered by an admin' to first time user at first connect such a good idea? Names like Newbie#0 aren't/shouldn't be registered.

It's more accurate than Unnamedplayer, and people using/not using there username in game is irrelevant, as those people have already set a name.  (And fyi, I go by just a white "david" in game quite often).

And lots of servers have had unnamedplayer registered at various times.

David, you dont seem to understand that the *majority* of PC users arent computer literate, most computers names were set by parents when they first bought the computer. At least have a start up men for the first time you run Tremulous which allows you (like battlefield 2) to have your own profile.

I have to agree that it is an extraordinarily bad idea to import a local account name into an online game.  Don't even make it an opt-in menu option - if people must have it they can type /name username, but I can't imagine who would.  Anyone who is even mildly privacy-aware would isolate their pseudonyms from anything having to do with real life.

xoxoxo,
Heather

I seem to break this privacy conversation, but...

There is thing called toggle sprint/toggle wallwalk. And i Need. Everytime. Put. It. on. just click off and on.

Minor, but really annoys sometimes if you notice you need wallwalk, and then rifle sucks your life out cuz wallwalk doesn't work properly.

Try fix this please :)? and if there is way to fix it, please put link right away. I appreciate that. Truly, I do.
