This past week, I started learning how to play :dragoon: and have basically fallen in love with the class. I prefer Regular-Ass Goon to Advanced, mainly because Adv. can't pull off sneak-pounces nearly as well as the smaller version.
Anyway, I've read ParaMedic's guide and specced a lot of good Goons and now I was just wondering if you guys had any more notes on the subject that you'd like to share.
It seems like everybody plays their Goon a little differently. If you guys have any unique tactics that you might have developed when honing your own Goon-Style, I'd love to hear them.

I HAVE SOMETHING TO SAY.
Although Goon IS Enemy goon, it is also my favorite class, next to friend granger. The goon is THE best class to use in a scrim. Humans only use shotties? Aliens only use goons. Ok, it is impossible to teach someone a goon. They have to learn it themselves. I, myself, have recently just learned how to solo 3 helmless shotties (Yes I know, I SUCK). But the only good advice I have for people learning goon is: STAY CLOSE. The goon's only move that gets it to the human is its pounce. That has alot of end lag, where the human can rape you before you can even attack. As long as you are within the slash range of the goon, the humans won't last. You need 3 shots to kill a helmed human, and 4 to kill a bsuit (Who uses those??). Now after you can do that, the problem is hitting people like Lawr, and Drac who have god-like dances. The only way to get better after your aim is amazing, is to practice against amazing dancers. I only know Drac, and Lawr. I've never had a goon v shotty with Jit, alothough I heard his dance is awesome too. So yea, there's my two cents.
AND
You should apply for CTU Venk, Droid applied for us too!!!! :o

Don't forget your lightsaber.

Thanks for the tips, guys.
@Reapd: Yeah, those John Travolta-dancers can be a bitch to head-chomp. But when you do finally drop one, it feels pretty badass. And Bauer did a really good job of schooling me on how to out-circle good players.
@Moose: Definately. The Goon's lightsaber is actually my favorite part about the class. I especially love using it to bitchslap nakeds who try to chase down my wounded Goon as he's fleeing from H-base.

Don't try to follow their head around, let them dance till they end up in front of you and if they are the kinds that get right up against you so you can't see shit back up :P
-
Thank you, Aviator. I actually tried the "let 'em circle" trick on a Helm with MG and he only got like 50hp off me before I chomped him dead. Of course he was alone at the time and I opened with a headbite from behind.
Still, it looked really fucking funny having him circle me in a panic while I just stood there and went CHOMP... CHOMP... Dead.

Okay... I know I asked for Goon tips, but awesome nerd-related ninja comics will also do just fine. Thank you, Superspirality. That one made my day.

Ok, lets see. What do I do with a goon.
VS S1: Pretty obvious. Pounce the nakes = insta kill, headshot = insta kill. If there is a shotty that is crouching, pounce chomp. Or if you are already near, it is harder for a crouching shotty to aim (and dodge of course) so a lot of people will circle chomp. Just like a simple wasd circle dodge, only chomp when the circle gets you in range.
VS S2: Pounce, Chomp Chomp is pretty effective. Sometimes the pounce fails and you just have to finish with 3 chomps. Which is fine since the pounce got you close enough. I would recommend (if you didnt already) going on a devmapped server and doing /cg_drawbbox 1 so you can see the humans bbox. You really dont have to chomp near the head, just somewhere on top of the bbox.
VS S3: Chainsuits are my very favorite thing to kill as goons. I have a pretty simple yet fairly effective tactic against the average chainsuit. Pounce Pounce Chomp Chomp. Im sure others have done this before too. Generally a lot of people just try to get 4 chomps. THe problem with that is, (for me anyway) that the chaingun rips me up too fast. So I pounce twice to both do damage, and dodge fire. Then its 2 headchomps and hes dead. The only flaw is that if the bsuit is ready for you, his medi can quickly add an extra chomp. So if this is the case you may want 3 pounces and 2 chomps. Either way I think thats better than just goin for 4 straight chomps.
Lucis are a whole different story. To be honest I never really did figure out a great way to kill a luci. Bsuit luci I try to use my chainsuit method, doesnt always work because pouncing straight at a bsuit is an easy way to take a luci to the face. So some times I just go back and forth chomping away at the head.
Battpack lucis..I treat like s2s but I usually fail at killing a good luci.
Other notes for goons.
Double Pounce: AKA Corner Pounce
Pounce, and once you release mouse2, hold space. Very effective for escaping. Also effective at killing rets:
Double pounce on the ret and fly safely away, then double back. Only takes 2 to kill each ret.
There are sooo many cool goon tactics, that I really cant post in 1 post, very hard to explain so I can really only demonstrate.
-
Lol, sweet comic.
-
Thank you, Bauer.
Chainsuits are still my biggest problem when Gooning, but Pounce-Pounce-Chomp-Chomp sounds like just the ticket.
As for Lucies, so far my tactic is: Pounce over them (they're expecting it from a Mara, but not a Goon usually), look down to swipe-pounce they're head as I pass, chomp them when I land (if I can) and then POUNCE UP again, but in a random direction so that their charged Lucy-blast (hopefully) misses and then run away.
Usually though, what happens is:
I TRY to pounce over them but catch a blast anyway, die, and respawn as an Adv. Mara so I can hurry back to finish them off.
On a side note:
Today, we were playing a small round (like 4 vs. 4) on A.T.C.S. My Goon is parked just inside the front entrance to H-Base when I see this helm fleeing from the hallway. I spot him sprinting in above me, presumably headed back towards his base.
The Human doesn't see me though, so I wait until he's up the second ramp and then pounce up in front of him, LANDING DIRECTLY OVER THE MEDI and blocking it just as this injured Human was about to use it to heal. The Helm was caught so off-guard that he didn't even get a shot in on me before I CHOMP him dead.
That may not technically qualify as a "tactic", but it was sure funny to watch.

There are SOOOO many bad ways to goon, and only a few good, simple ways to own at gooning. All you have to do is practice those techniques and you will own like Dracone. i think
There I fixed it!! :)

Pounce ftw. If you run at a human spamming only mouse1, you deserve to die.

Pounce ftw. If you run at a human spamming only mouse1, you deserve to die.
Yeah, my proudest Gooning-moments are when I get to use pounce to finish off a Helm/B-suit. It's always way more satisfying than just chomping them to death.
And there's nothing quite like base-storming with a Goon and pouncing every naked in sight until the Human spawn-cue gets clogged with them.
-

Champion.
@Venk. I love finishin with pounces but I usually dont. My pounce is the first attack, and I end with chomps, maybe I should revers it. Chomp Chomp Pounce. That could be interesting.

Of course we do. That's what Tremulous is invented for. :)
BTW, on the subject of the 'double pounce' - I usually just charge the second pounce when mid-air from the first one.
-
Pounce ftw. If you run at a human spamming only mouse1, you deserve to die.
I'm one of these folks. I should investigate pounce further, but, battlesuits and naked humans aside, I find that one or two head chomps makes for a very effective way to dispose of light armored and helmeted humans respectively. That said, pulse rifles do tend to give me a hard time.
-

Umm, I don't die when I do that? I only pounce when running, and moving up, and getting closer to humans. I have good aim, so I only have to engage once, and they'll die. GG maybe its my aimbot :o

How so? You only have to circle chomp, I tend to jump more when engaging humans than pouncing anyway. But my goon is good, so I only have trouble with Drac, and such. So yea.
-
Pounce, jump, chomp. It never gets old. But pouncing is sadly underused.
-
When Gooning against a good dancer, I like to use a well-timed short pounce to get behind the human as he tries to circle me.
Basically: I open with a pounce to get close, head chomp as they start to circle, turn to follow them and then short-pounce past the human so that I end up just behind him, then one more chomp to drop a helm.
Make sure you turn to look at the Human as you're short-pouncing behind them so that you land the hit. Otherwise, you're still gonna need a third chomp ftw.
Still, a lot of the time, I'll just try to out-circle them. But if the human can pro-dance, I usually have to resort to a bit of pounce-trickery to kill them.
-

Well all right 8)
To deal with PRifles, (assume full arm+helm),
Tactic 1: Pounce, pounce back with 1/3 charge (a difficult tactic generally called Shoot'n Scoot). The PRifle does its damage at nearly point blank, so pouncing a few feet away before coming back results in much less damage to you. If you can repeat this 2-3 times within as many seconds, you got him.
Tactic 2: For tight corridors/no pounce areas, wait for the human to start firing. If close, dodge and chomp. If far enough away, wait for their clip to empty (and by that, I mean pounce at them when you think their clip is near empty, but they are still firing)

Dragoon is quite unique in that you can dominate with it by using only one button. Try it sometime.

Trem dev's need to listen to me.
for new 1.2, Chomp is faster repeat, weaker. Pounce is slower repeat, stronger. That way people have to use BOTH buttons.
-
IDK why people are complaining about goon chomp. I think it's just fine.
-
Goon chomp works, though I'd would be nice to have faster repeat. I think it will give incentive to use chomp instead of purely pouncing to some players because if you miss once, you can take less damage before you can chomp again.

I see what you're saying and they're not bad ideas. Honestly, I rarely chomp in GPP unless I know it's the kill shot. Though maybe it's just the way I'm used to playing with Goon now, but I also really like the finesse required for pounce-only kills.
-
But isn't the current 1.2 chomp actually much better when used in conjunction with pounce?
I mean honestly I don't understand why people are trying to 1 v 1 a chainsuit with anything less then a rant.
-
Because a decent goon can pounce a chainsuit to death with only a loss of 100-120 hp.
-

Yea. Any good alien can take out any armored human with the exception of a basilisk and a dretch.
-

That's a load of hp to lose while attempting to kill one enemy. Especially when humans work in squads.

qft. If you lose more than 120HP in a single battle with a /squadron/ you're probably doing it wrong.
-
Well, obviously, you wouldn't take on more than one chainsuit; I'm talking about one of those straggling chainsuits who gets seperated from the pack.

This does happen quite a bit, especially in GPP where humans don't have to camp 75% of the round and tend to travel in smaller units.
I've also known a few ballsy chainsuits who will solo-charge across an entire map, all the way from their base to the Aliens' while dancing around everything in their path, just to finish off one retreating Rant. How these kamikaze-suits ever manage to make it all the way there and back without dying, I'll never know. I guess some people are just trample-proof.

If a chainsuit focuses fire on your advanced mara and has decent aim you are dead automatically unless they fuck up, same in 1.1.

Yeah, I've seen a lot of noobs scream "AIMBOTS!" for this very reason. Though, in GPP it normally requires the Mara to get caught standing still or walking on the ground. Thankfully 1.2's wall-bounce is WAY more reliable than 1.1's and I'm usually already bouncing around at a fast enough rate of speed to keep the chainsuit from getting a good lock on me. USUALLY...
Sometimes, like say if a chainsuit catches me in a spot where I can't just simply wall-bounce away, I'm swiss-cheesed before my Mara even has time to cry about it.
