What keyboard config is best? I like to have sprint be shift cntrl crouch but i would also like a good button for slow walking with flamer. I have dodge as right mouse button. Whats the "pro" config? :)
-
I have dodge as right mouse button.
Nice.
I like to have sprint be shift cntrl crouch
That's weird.
Therefore you are weird. I have sprint set to 'c', and crouch/wallwalk set to left-shift
-
To make trem the same as most other fps's i play, I have shift set to sprint, x bound to walk, and c bound to crouch/wallwalk.
-
There really is no singe "pro" config.
IMO The ideal configuration will have keys to buy every weapon and evolve to any class without having to go through the dialogs, and will have sprint and dodge bound to different keys, but its entirely personal preference as to the actual keys involved.

Yah i like to have shift as sprint for the same reason. I was looking for a spot for walking and i think I am going to put it at x now.

Yah thats my human config. Idk i change my controlls when i switch to aliens because i like wall walk to be shift like you do.
I also like the idea of setting weapons and evolves as hot keys.
Thanks for the respones.

For me, I usually put essential keys near WASD, like Q for dodge, E for toggle sprint, C for crouch/wallwalk and list goes on. It is pretty much standard Tremulous config, with few exceptions for me.
-
Interesting. Fair point that the RMB doesn't get used much by humans by default. Perhaps I'll try itemect grem or toggle blaster.
for me:
shift is dodge
x is walk
e is sprint
q is medikit
c is crouch/wallwalk
Also: pressing c on the us server does toggles wallwalk, but on the eu server it doesn't toggle, you hold it down. is there any way to force the latter behaviour using binds/etc? I much prefer it and find it rather annoying changing between the two.

I thought there was an option somewhere in controls where you could select toggle on or toggle off.

Thats a good idea. I just leave mine as the scroll wheele and leave it set on medi, then i can switch to blaster if i have to destroy base structures and conserve ammo. I dont really use blaster much though.

I've been considering a bind to use mouse scrolls to change bindsets.

That would be cool

Ooh, config comparison thread. :)
Let's see... Left click for fire, right click for jump, mouse wheel left for buy ammo, mouse wheel right for my grenade bind, mouse wheel down for reload, mouse wheel up for medkit, aux1 for secondary attack, aux2 for tertiary attack.
Space bar for dodge, numbers for buying.
I used to have space and fire switched, but it became inconvenient when I started getting better.
-
Well since im still in 1.1 I say boost binds are key. I have all my item binds on my keypad. Also of course you gotta have your humans.cfg and aliens.cfg so you can easily change binds between teams and/or settings like sensitivity. I have too many binds / configs to type out. Id have to actually copy/paste them. But obviously hes askin for 1.2 so mine would be of no use.

I always wonder how the fuck you use rightclick for jump. I've been pondering this for a long time, bro.

lol

I prefer having itemact gren bound to mouse3 (MMB for the ignorant). I once had a script that changed the function of mouse3, when I pressed N it purchased a grenade and bound itemact gren to mouse3, when I threw the grenade it set mouse3 back to default. Too lazy to write it again :-\ Most of my binds are default.

Play Quake for like a day and you'll see.
It's great for timing and strafe jumping. I mean, seriously, right click goes almost unused in Tremulous.
-
I use my mouse wheel a lot. I have a bind for buying weapons by scrolling, selecting what alien to evolve to and then press alt to evolve to the selected alien and scrolling though the buildings.
After a while you know how far you must scroll to buy the chaingun.

yah i know what you mean. Thats why i love using it for strafe. But then again i use shotgun alot so i kind of need to strafe now and again.

I use mouse 2 for pounce as aliens of course, and zoom for md. One of those things I have set to change in my humans.cfg and aliens.cfg. I think its pretty nifty.

IE, exactly what's bound by default? Or is that only gpp?

I have a different principle you might be interested in: I use the mouse with the left hand for aiming, firing, and certain movement toggles, and the keypad for moving, having redundancies, this is i can turn with the mouse AND the keypad.
Keypad is essentially this: http://members.inode.at/sacharja/bewegungstasten.html (it's in German, but I figure you will get the point.
Currently, I use right mouse for primary trigger, left mouse for secondary, mousewheel down for sprint AND dodge, mind that you can only dodge back and sideways, so keeping that button down gives me running forward and dodging backwards/sideways at the same time, which is quite effective.
For grenades, I use all four cursor-keys, but it is a "buy and drop"-binding (sell gren; buy gren; itemact gren) to prevent accidental nading of the base. Medkit is right-control, weapons/classes are on the main keyboard's digit-keys (1,2,...,9,0), and I use certain letter-keys on the board for misc. stuff, like chat-binds or buying armour (a) or the suit (s) and such.
If you are interested, I'll give you more details, I use this way of bindings since 1995, and I am quite effective with it.

I think its +button8 by default. The only things I used mouse2 (as in default mouse2) for are luci secondary fire, and building. So I just have it change that in my configs. So if I want a luci, I press 7 on my keypad, and it rebinds mouse2 as +button8. Then I have to make sure it binds it back when I switch to md. Same goes for conkit. I think I have it bound to kp 9 or something. But ya, I think I have a pretty good system with my configs. Also this is in 1.1. So I dont know what the default is in 1.2

so wait is there a way i can have my keyboard config for humans and then switch back to alien key config by pressing a button? Or is that impossible/too difficult?
-
I reserve 4 keys for alien/human spawns. Z/X = Granger/Dretch/alien keyset, C/V = CKit/Rifle/human keyset.

Don't listen to her Algar! There are many more useful things to map to those keys!

Especially on a 101 key keyboard ::)

Ok ill try to explain. I assume it works in 1.2. Dont see any reason why it wouldnt. Ok type /fs_homepath in the trem console (open console by pressing ` incase you didnt know) That will show you your homepath. Go to that home path and then go to the base folder that is inside. Make a humans.cfg and an aliens.cfg file. Open the .cfgs with a text editor like notepad. You can make it set any setting in those .cfg files.Leave out "/" though Example;
team humans
sensitivity 8
bind 1 "buy larmour; buy shotgun; buy helmet"
My actuall files are a lot longer but that a short example. Anyway once you are done, go into trem. I like to use F3 for humans, and F4 for aliens. So in the console type /bind F3 exec humans.cfg and /bind F4 exec aliens.cfg
Its not that difficult, there are lists of all the item names somewhere so you can bind all your items.

[wiki]Binding[/wiki].
There's a neat little page for you, and it even has some pre-made examples if you're feeling lazy.
-
gpp (and some 1.1 clients) automatically exec human.cfg, alien.cfg, and spectator.cfg when you change teams.
