Title: Tremulous to Steam?
Post by: Bernhard on November 27, 2010, 06:39:10 am
I was wondering if DD is too busy to talk to Valve about Tremulous. There are many other open source games in Steam, so why couldn't Tremulous be there too?
It would bring a lot of new players and provide popularity and feedback. So, if the dev team isn't too busy, then here's something for them to think about.

1) nice triple topic start.
2) What open-source games on steam? Only one I'm aware of is Alien Swarm.

Technically that version of the game is not open source, the engine is the valve "source" engine. It would be interesting to think about, perhaps just for doing something completely different. For all of five seconds, that is, until you realize that putting it on steam would be violating the spirit if not the letter of the GPL.

Alien Swarm is not open source, there are no open source games on Steam.

Good idea, bad implimentation. Tremulous deserves a lot more hype and a larger (active) community. Are there any alternatives to Steam? Not as a means to distribute the product, but to advertise.

You cant advertise outdated product, it... almost instant phail. Check other topics with discussions about new features/engine. Then w8 for this released, and only then adv. In russian trem community we tryed make such. Yes, a lot of new players online in some weeks. 95+ percent of them never reconnect after 1st try just caus of 'in _insertgamehere_ much better' effect. They just dont see main point of this game. =\

Are you sure that shouldn't read "Yes, a lot of new players online in some weeks. 95+ percent of them never reconnect after 1st try, they just dont see main point of this game."?

I think failure to grasp the concept is what stops a lot of casual gamers coming our way, more than the outdated engine, IMHO trem is still quite pretty, certainly compared to the comparatively popular UrT, as long as you don't ramp up the gamma.

I think CATAHA makes a fair point. She (;)) is right about marketing outdated products. It's a major roadbump. I don't think it's a wall, though, and 1.2 looks a lot better than 1.1 (though it could use some engine hacks *cough UrT cough*). The thing that I think would be the most difficult in attracting new players would be competition (http://www.naturalselection2.com/) (<- link!). Yeah, yeah, I know, old drama, eh? But think about it: Graphics are the new gameplay (however much I'm extremely miffed about that) and if you take two similar(ly themed?) games, most people will default to the one that looks better.

Well.. for be more correct... they just dont see any point waste their time on some game with strange and hard (for 1st look) gameplay with outdated engine.
Imagine that you're totally new to Trem. What you see?
Most players easily kill you
You cant get why admins kicking you from server and all call you deconner (?!) and feeder
You have default client with no tutorials, so all you see its cardboard models roaming around. (no blood, no 'superpie-style' effects, etc)
After few attempts you strongly think about playing in other game. May be you gonna sometime came back for some 'atcs fun' (all other maps too hard for you and dont let such camping possibilities.

After all that will you be fan of such game? Dont think so. New player need at least one 'wow!' thing when he came in game 1st time. If you cant offer it nowaday - you phailed on attracting players. =\

Yeah, trem 1.2 should be released with a tutorial.  One that shows up on the main screen labeled "tutorial" and has a voice guide you through the different aspects of tremulous.

That's an appealing plan, certainly better than this idea that pretty graphics will, in the long run, make up for the learning curve.

When you say tutorials, do you mean something like adapted single player versions of the training games on the wrath newbie server?

Better graphics its a motivation pay more attention to game. Tremulous is not work or school and you dont need to learn it. It depends from ur wish, so game should have something to support such wish. Tutorial is vital thing to game, but not only...

Desura would fit Tremulous if it needed to be distributed on such a platform, since it's the Moddb platform and is comming out pretty soon, it will have lots of other games of the same kind of tremulous.

I agree new player that tries trem doesn't know what they are getting into, a tutorial would help a lot. The main problem with new players is that they join a game or server to find it empty or it is in the middle of a game. If the manage to join a team (especially aliens) they cant figure out how to spawn, they spawn into open fire, or don't understand that they spawned as a builder.

Well a tutorial would be very nice.
My friend, Repatition/Josh introduced me to it and when he initially did I pretended to like it.
I kept dying and it got really old. It especially peeved me because I am usually really good at FPS and shooters in general. But after a few hours of play I started to like Tremulous.
And here I am now.
A tutorial would be nice, a nicely edited video tutorial that's played in-game would suffice.
