Title: Cannot change username to admin username
Post by: Jengajam2 on December 16, 2010, 11:18:30 pm
I constantly change operating systems, so every time I reinstall Tremulous. For quite some time, I have not been able to change my name to "jengajam2" since it was granted admin status on the dedicated servers. Is there any sort of verification system available to change my name?

When you are given admin on a server, your GUID is recorded in the server side document, admin.dat.  When a player shows up trying to use an admin's name, but has a different GUID, the server will think that they are not the admin and therefore deny the use of the admin protected name.  The only ways to use your name consistently is to keep a copy of your GUID when you re-install operating systems.  Your GUID is saved in your qkey, which can be found in your tremulous directory.  If you didn't save your qkey from before, ask a dev on US1 or any admin on EU1 and they can set your old GUID to level 0, and replace it with your new GUID.  Remember to keep your qkey someplace safe.

Thank you very much. How can I recognize if a dev is on the server? And if they are, will they not be able to adjust my new GUID to level 1, or would that be unethical?

If you're careless enough to have three registered usernames that you've lost the qkey for then i'd suggest that you don't ask for name protection again until you've figured out how qkey backups work.
