Ok, I'm not thinking about trying to do any of this, I'm just curious what people are interested in for future releases. Everyone gets 2 votes.
-
If engine improvements include AMP / scriptable entities.
And I suppose Domination goes under "Different Game modes"? Tho IMO it should become the default once it's finished, not just an option.
-
Oh good, i don't think anyone's ever approached this subject before on the forums...

wow i think im seeing a trend.... =P

How about spawning a community.

normal mapping would be easy if i knew where the shaders were...or how ogl2.0 shaders work... I understand 3.x+

Fortunately OpenGL 2 and 3 both can use GLSL shaders. OpenGL 2 is more limited in the number of available texture formats, lacks a number of built-ins (esp. integer functions), but most differences are easily worked around.
The bigger issue is that the engine does not use any OpenGL 2.x shaders in the first place; in fact it uses only OpenGL 1.1 functions plus the multitexturing extension, so it uses basically a subset of OpenGL 1.2.1. This version of OpenGL was released in 1998 and is amazingly still supported by the hardware vendors although the underlying hardware has been radically changed several times. On the other hand 90% of the functions that the engine uses are on the OpenGL list of deprecated functions, so an update to an OpenGL 3.x renderer would be nice to have (at least when Intel gets their drivers into the 21st century...)
-
@intel drivers: I know. at least sandy bridge has 3.x+

I don't know what I would like to see, but I wouldn't like to see those players who say:
* OMFG, l00k @ CoD, 1t l00k$ $0 R3@l!$t!C, Why can't the devs implent such graphics in trem, lol, nub, p0wNaGe.
* Add a grenade launcher, advanced tyrant, advanced advnaced dragoon, nuke launcher - it will make the game better.
* WTF? The basi is useless, it can't kill anyone in 1 hit unless the human is a real noob, make it have more health, damage, higher jump, invisibility...
-
basi is amazing if you are good at it, keep in mind its the cheapest alien.

Dretch? Granger? Advanced Granger?

Man I wish I knew more regarding shading and shader coding.
Just a GUI guy :/

I'd be interested in an advanced advanced dragoon. Call it the Equestrian.

Lets just call it Ultimate Dragoon? Spits flaming barbs, has 300 HP, Has 2 heads (wider bite and pounce range). Yeah, OP, but I'm just using my imagination.

well implementing materials like the source engine :D ;D
I said it before and I'll say it again: ioquake3-source engine would be great, but instead of this you could implement tremulous on the doom 3 engine ;D

doom3 engine = ioq4 = gunna be open source someday. "Carmack said that he planned to petition Zenimax to release the id Tech 4 source upon the release of Rage" -http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Id_Tech_4

A greater variety of alien classes and human weapons. Bring in flying units and mobile bases. Make turrets that shoot lucifer rounds. Make an s4 where there is an actual battle Granger (!00 hp 50 slash damage 25 spit) Make battle suits look... a little more.... like Terminators from Warhammer40k. Make maps so big you need two hours to get through it and can fly around in helicockters.
Break the game.

That's the spirit.

Wish the game physics had a heavier feel, like Killzone 2.

yeah. Maybe something like HL2 where the bodies dont have a specific animation but they have limbs (wheee dretch spins around from luci!)

It's called rag-doll. When rag-dolls became something new, they were extremely abused, by just having a simple rag-doll (no death animations). Halo and CoD has some good rag-doll examples, while HL2 doesn't really how you the best.
-
Just enable ragdoll when your dead, and have the death shot add some force depending on what it is.
-
I meant that the game can seem so fast-paced that nothing has any value. If the game had a heavier, slower feel, it would add to immersion.
Like a dragoon say, doing a lot of damage, but requiring some serious operation skill (like a bf2142 gunship). When I played as a goon, it felt more like being a sniper's bullet, and just shooting yourself over and over again, too fast. I want to actually feel like I'm at the wheel of a 500lb(?) alien, who's all teeth and armor, and has some value.
LOL looking at that it doesn't make any sense ::)

Tremulous should just stay at the engine it is. Other games have a much better engine which means people can play that. Some people like my self dont really care for graphics that high. So I say just stick with making new guns and classes.
most people have crappy computers and some of those crappy computers are decent but will lag with low graphics settings. Im just saying just stick with improving everything else except the graphics...
The GPP graphics are perfect just improve everything else. Weapons/classes/ player models/
-
most people have crappy computers
"Most" people don't play games. The ones that do understand the importance of having at least a decent computer. I ran 1.2 successfully (and at a good framerate) on a laptop that was entry-level 4 years ago. By the time 1.2 comes out (face it, that gives them a lot of time), most of the people with that kind of hardware will have upgraded, especially if they play games. And the few who don't upgrade can just turn down the settings.
The engine is not that big of an issue.
Models, on the other hand, are where the biggest drops in frame rate occur. Better assets = more polygons and bigger textures = slower framerates. My PC can probably handle anything thrown at it, and so I want better assets too, but seriously, think about what you're saying before you post it. The engine itself has much less of an effect on framerate than asset quality.
-
GLSL shaders chew frame rate, so the engine does have a profound effect.
For instance and engine can have bottlenecks (poly count and efficiency) that make the engine a slug compared to a newer engine.
-
GLSL shaders chew frame rate, so the engine does have a profound effect.
But shaders can be disabled, if the engine's set up correctly. Case in point = Sauerbraten.
-
Yeah that's true, I didn't "get(as in I didn't pay attention)" the initial subject of backwards compatibility with old PCs
-
What I would like to see is different game modes. Tremulous has good theme, and because of it, lots of potential for some campaing-type games, and/or some sort mission type maps (i. e. Blackout.)

look at an article called mindfield of deadly by spmeone else but i came up with the idea in the first place :granger:
