Post by: Firstinaction on February 26, 2011, 01:02:45 pm
Tremulous

Has anybody thought of an App for tremulous...

Not just the game but an app that includes - Tips and tricks

.The forum
.Tutorials
.mapping
.strategies for all classes... humans/aliens

I thought of this idea last week but looked up a tutorial on how to make a app for your ipod touch and I quit because its too much too tell you the truth...

Even though I would do it but...

"EHH NAHH"

All the iCrap stuff doesn't have the power to run the game.

For the rest of it, there already is one: it's called a web browser.

TBH, some iDevices have more than enough power to run the game. Liiiiiiiiiiiiiiiike...my iPad. I've always thought playing Trem on my iPad would be epic.

SPEAKING of Tremulous on iDevices (sorta), we should put Tremulous in the Mac App Store. Might (RE: will) bring in more people.

You mean apple's iPad that they sometimes let you use.

Given how little apple will let you do with it, it seems kinda a stretch to call it yours.

Ba-dum-tsh.
In fact, this is why you haven't played Tremulous on your iPad in the first place.
Also, good luck trying to aim with a touchscreen. See you in game, thanks in advance for feeding me.

I've always thought playing Trem on steve's iPad would be sad and awkward.
fixed

Doesn't the mac app store have licensing/drm issues that prevent gpl'd apps from being compatible?

Yep, they do. They impose "additional restrictions", something which the GPL does not allow.

I've been thinking a simple forum viewer would be quite nice on android devices (lol iCrap), and it wouldn't be that difficult to do, since it's java.

cant have anything open source in the istore, so we cant.

Except you already have a web browser, so what's your app going to do better?

No, can't have anything GPL'd, that's not the same thing, unless there are additional clauses that specifically rule out any app for which sourcecode is available.
and it wouldn't be that difficult to do, since it's java.
Does that mean we can expect you to pull one out of an unspecified orifice in the near future?

Did I suggest someone do it? Besides, it's my job as a troll to demand the newbies code their suggestions.

Well the App will obviously have right then and there strategies on all the classes...  Easy 1 click away... On the app and there....

Step 1: Open Tremulous forums in Safari.
Step 2: Go to tremulous.net/forum.
Step 3: Click "Strategies and Tactics".
Step 4: Add a bookmark.
That's the closest you'll get to "strategies on all the classes...  Easy 1 click away...". If you want an app to do that for you, code it yourself.

I think, you people are dumb. Complaining what you "can't" do on an iDevice. It's called jailbreaking. It allows you to do anything you would ever want. It does void warranty, but if you restore your iDevice before taking it to the Apple store, they'll never know. I love how people rank on Apple. BECAUSE LINUX AND WINDOWS ARE SO MUCH BETTER. [/sarcasm]

Yeah, take back control, teach apple a lesson by paying them for their hardware and then having to crack it to use it how you want, yeah, you go, fanboi! ::)

It's this kind of dumbfuckery that gives apple users a bad name, well, ok, them being apple users doesn't help.

And for the record, some 3D games can run on an iPhone 4G already (I have a copy of Cube on mine that I never use- wait a sec, how did that get into the app store in the first place if it's GPLed?). The problem?
-Cube is OLD, with lower-quality graphics than Tremulous.
-It's a pain in the ass to aim on those things. Like I said, be ready to feed. And not kill anything.
-The lag (and loading all the maps) would SUCK. Especially if you're not on wifi.
-DRM issues in general. Want to install a HUD? Edit your configs? Good luck with that.
And really, what are the benefits? You get to jump into the middle of a half-hour round for a couple minutes while you're waiting in line? Ultimately, porting Tremulous to iDroidPadPhone is just another of those things someone suggests just because "ZOMG IT WUD BE TOTLA KEWL", not giving a shit how much effort it would take, and whether that would even be worth it.

Agreed. However, a chat client for tremulous on mobile devices wouldn't be a bad idea.

Cube's released under the zlib license, it's very liberal and the opposite end of the  spectrum from the GPL, anything goes.
Agreed. However, a chat client for tremulous on mobile devices wouldn't be a bad idea.
Tremulous game servers are for playing games, IRC servers are for chat, IRC clients must be fairly common on smartphones, this "chat client for tremulous" seems redundant.

We will? awesome, i take it everyone will receive one and we don't have to pay for them, or by "we" did you mean the mobile phone industry?

Me thinks that Tremulant's the fanboy. I'm not a fanboy, never was. If windows or linux actually had computers that could handle 4-5 Software updates, I would love that. However they don't. I'm confused as to how you think I wanted to pay Apple back. I didn't jailbreak out of spite or state that we should because of it, which I'm sure you would do to a Linux phon- oh wait, there is no linux phone. I did it for the usefulness. I can customize it more, and for free, compared to any other phone out there. But anyway, as to what Cele said, I completely agree. I would love to talk to some people that don't hang out on IRC normally (everyone who actually plays trem), and I think it could be fun, although the problem of showing the people on the chat client in the server without the running of an actual game client would be hard.

If linux had computers? You're a clueless technophobe, we get it, there's no shame in that, but do please stop talking now.

We the consumer will have the opportunity to purchase one.
Then they will go to 8 cores, 16 and finally 50+ cores by 2014.....
Trem on a phone sounds bad to say the least.....

Ok, this thread has gotten stupid enough already, I don't think anymore arguing will solve anything. The takeaway from this is a Tremulous App is not going to happen, not a very interesting topic, as it wouldn't provide much, and people now just want to off-topic argue with each other.

If anyone really wants to argue about apple anymore, you could try PMing someone and asking if they are open to debate. I really doubt that will happen though as this thread is more about your (awesome company's/your jaded knowledge's) penis length. Or something.

I will say to reapd however, that if you are arguing in defense of a company, and Tremulant is criticizing it, I feel pretty safe in saying you are much more likely to be the fanboy in this occasion. It's fairly simple logic.
