I'm sure this subject has been discussed here before but didn't find an appropriate thread.
Just now I was playing on some random server as an alien. Some player with no name decided to deco all the eggs and build one that dropped the newborn aliens straight into death. Decided to votekick him, the human team of course didn't give a shit, still we managed to get the necessary votes. The guy gets voted off, about 5 seconds pass and his back..
Switched server and went to play as a human. The map had just started and this time the reactor was decoed by some guy who didn't understand english, apparently he was trying to move it with good intent. Although this caused the human team to get wiped.
Problems:
1. Dickheads who intentionally ruin your game by deconstructing vital structures. An admin usually solves this problem, sadly most of the servers don't have active admins. You can always votekick them, although it doesn't help, they'll just get back on.
2. Newbies etc. deconstructing vital structures. This isn't such a big problem as #1.
Solutions(?)
1. Voteban could solve this problem. Getting banned for no reason would be more than likely tho. Also at the moment on random servers pretty much no one votes on kicks, atleast not the opposing team. A good solution imho would be that server would kick everyone who doesn't vote. Sounds radical but eventually it might work. Solving this problem with deco timers etc. could be hard since the building seems to work well and balanced atm.
2. Maybe a some sort of tutorial? After passing the tutorial you could use ckit and granger or deco the vital structures. Can't really think of proper solution for this one.
Just some thoughts of mine. Btw has anyone else noticed that the number of #1 dickheads has increased lately?
Edit. First post :-?

If all goes well the deconning system will be replaced by a less griefer vulnerable system in the next version.
-
My solution: You must be actively using Tremulous (not leaving it afk) for 10 hours before the ckit and granger get unlocked.
Even then, it won't stop the jerks.
This is a problem in the HL2 mod, Garry's Mod, also. Basically, the mod lets you build things (rockets, vehicles, anything you can think of) using the props used in HL2 and CS:S, with lots of tools to rope, weld, and otherwise stick things together.
Then someone joins the server, takes out the remover tool, and shoots everyone's stuff. There goes 30 minutes of effort making a semi-automatic cannonball launcher. >_>
The solution some Gmod servers are using is an addon that makes it so that only the person who created the object can remove it. This could work well in Tremulous:
- Only the player who built a structure may remove it.
- By pressing the "use structure" button near the structure, you can lock/unlock your structure from deconstruction by other players.
- Alternately, a "built structures" menu could be brought up at any time, allowing you to lock/unlock the structures you've built
- Structures will default as locked
- Admins may unlock any structure, or all of a player's structures at once. (stopping newbies from preventing a base move because of locked structures)
Sure, game disruptors could still ruin a game. But to do so, they have to join the game at the BEGINNING, before all the structures have been built up by other players. That drastically reduces the window of opportunity of a deconer.
Alternately, we need a "1 day voteban" type of vote. That, like you probably guessed, bans the user for 24 hours. To stop it from being abused, you'd need a 2/3 majority or something for it to pass.
Also, it's off-topic but it would be REALLY helpful if when kicking a player, you had to fill out a "reason" for the kicking, that would be displayed on everyone's screen. Like:
Votekick LOLOMGDECON, Y=3 N=5
Reason: deconed our base
That alone would prevent people from being kicked just because some idiot started a vote against them and everyone voted yes just because they felt like it: if the reason was "Reason: ffffff", noone would vote yes.
-
At the moment the only viable solution is TJW's mod so admins can give out kick-privs to their regular players.

Kuru ? Kuru ?
The same that yesterday was biting me as A (me A), then on the next map sat on tesla with a Chain and shoot random H for fun? The same i TKed 10 times cos every time you spawned you would run to me and start shooting? The same i eventually kicked off the server?

ok sorry then, maybe it was Kiri, or Kury? :]

there's team vot kick if the other team are blocking hte kick of a deconer, and 30-min vote ban would be good.
-
Talking about morons and tkers/assholes, i had an experience yesterday that really irritated me. Some noob on my (alien) team, was deconning all the eggs, and instead making barricades in completely idiotic places, where they were not blocking anything.
In my experience, the barricades are completely useless, and should be replaced with something else, or just plain removed.
Talking of assholes, i had another experience. There was this guy in a game, named THORN, i'm not completely sure it was the same guy that is on these forums but i'm quite sure it was, because i seem to remember the tag of his "mass driver club" in his nick (though i am still not sure, and i have no solid evidence).
He was constantly throwing nades into his own base, tking large parts of the team.
after a while i got so pissed off by this, i started trying to kill thorn, but thorn though he may be an asshole, he was better than me, and so succeeded in tking me alot more times.
though i tried to kick vote him, it was to no avail, because noone else seemed to have noticed him tking (which is strange, because he often succeeded in wiping out the whole team)and thorn himself was playing innocent, and almost managed to make me sound like the real tker.
that is the other thing, "leet" people who think they are kings of the game, and can make their own rules.
i think there should be a limit to the amount of tking that could be done, before one was automatically kicked. of course this limit would have to be reasonably high, since tking is a quite probable incident in trem, and should have to be higher in humans than aliens, or opposite, since the differences in the tk rates in both teams surely must be high.
the reason i am proposing a quite high limit of team damage allowed, is because in my time of playimng enemy territory, i have experienced some of these limits to be too low, which can result in kick after some unluck with the flamethrower.
(i hope this was not a confusing post, as i have kind of lost track of it when writing.)
edit: (sorry to thorn for calling him a lousy-no-good-tker, if it was not him, if it however was him, he has no sympathy whatsoever from me).
-
it might not have been him. some shit-heads like you use other poeples names.

I hate these kind of people !! This is so sad :O .

Yes definately would make the deconners life a bit harder. Although this would open a whole new area of abuse, imagine some twat using all the bpoints for locked medipads etc.

Sounds very good.
At the moment the best solution for the dickhead problem i've come up with is to play on a server with active staff, like SATGNU. Sadly my ping often sucks on those.
just checked, it was HARO
I already got excited..

oh the irony

depends what server your on
never happens on aliens wrath as the admin are usually always there and straight up ban deconners within seconds
-
the }MG{ server normaly has admins on, andone with }MG{ tag.
come paly there

You're one of them you asshole, you destroyed 4 games yesterday on ESA

I haven't played since 5 days, only a bit today. Lineage FTW

Wtf you bitching about, Garoth saw it too.

There has been a wannabe Belier13 around, deconning too.
I suspect Thorn cause the fake belier was using a very stupid foreign language.
I don't understand this kid, what did he think ? "Oh yeah Belier13 is a deconner, I'm gonna take his name and decon, too."
Btw : if his name was first }US{Belier13 (in a somewhat color) It wasn't me, it was the wannabe.
Then he found me and changed properly. Such a dumbass, he could have check "what's your ingame name" tread.
-
All the more reason to only play on (and with) servers with TJW's mod
-
if you kick someone from a map they could always return and the other ideas suk. how about when they get kicked they are blocked by trem to join any other games for a few minutes?

the way tremulous works now, there is no way for a server to inform other servers about which players they should or shouldn't allow
-
Then we'd have Punkbuster and their like again.
And to be honest, I neither like those arseholes nor the full meaning of what GIGL_Bite proposed.
As that would not differentiate enough.

My only fear is that is you use the new method of "only the original builder of the item can unlock it and decon" then they will find some way to build structures in dumb ass places just to be annoying when they know they cant be doconned.
Plus, think of all the newbs who hop on and build a turret or a 2nd armory in the DUMBEST spot and then you cant decon it and you lose cause you needed that VITAL BP somewhere else.
Unfortunately even the above propsosed solution has it's caveats. But it may be a step in the right direction with some modifications.
=========
What would ultimately be awesome if it could work like AA (America's Army). You have to earn your way to becoming a builder and if you do things to damage your rep (ie - decon or tk) then your building privliges are stripped away. I am not sure how many people here are familiar with the AA way of playing online:
1) You install game.
2) Before you can even play online you HAVE to complete the training course. This teaches you how to play the game.
3) Once you finally get to play online you have a "rep" meter which tells other people your experince level. If you TK or do dumb sh*t then your rep meter goes down.
4) Server admins can not let people on their server that do not have a high enough rep rating
Basically it forces you to play the game correctly or your rep and ultimately your ability to play on servers will suffer.
Sure, some of it may be extreme but maybe some of this philosophy can be added to tremulous?

I don't like that idea either as it would again mean Pb-like-shite.
As it is right now, all we need is to have TJW's mod installed by default and an active player with kick-privs.
Since it is not default it is the work of the owners/admins to care for their servers, as it should be.
Anyone putting up a server and leaving it to the players w/o administration should be shot on sight, quite like the morons that play on such and keep bitching about grievers :D

I think a 24 hour voteban, paired with the compulsory "reason" for calling the vote, would be a good enough solution. Would mean that deconers could only ruin 1 server once a day, assuming people vote properly. And with a 2/3 majority (maybe make it "team 24-hour voteban", so that the other team doesn't ignore the vote), it'd be harder to get people banned for no reason.
-
Rippy, please read .)
-> who keeps track of all the bans? _one_ server -> PB-Shite
-> what happens to 'false' bans? -> (maybe) innocent noobs get 24h ban -> extremely bad thing.
And there is no server where people 'vote properly' if it means getting a 24h ban on all server.
-
- Make team vote work correctly and the ONLY way to votekick a non spectator from the server.
- Make a vote kick act as a 5 minute ban if repeated a few times in a day. And as a 1 hour ban if the lamer is really stuborn.
-
And with that we're back to the 'central server' that keeps track...
Besides the previously stated problems with that, who's going to pay for that server?
I still say get the servers correctly administrated and the problem solves itself.

Where did I say you need a central server ? The ban is a simple IP ban for the current server. The "a few times in a day" correspond to the used IP.
-
there is the server that holds the list of servers. all it has to do is add a rule to iptables to block the dude.
-
Sorry Stof, my bad. You're right, you didn't.
David, I don't believe that the same server should be used for it as bad tempered players would (D)DOS it .)
-
good point, but do you think the likes of belend13 even know what a DDoS attack is?
-
Sending wrong/fake packets to cause shit on a server, I did it more often than you kiddo.
-
Actually, a (D)DOS is an attack on a computer with the goal of making it unable to do it's intended operations. It doesn't even need to be on a network but most of the time it is, and most of the time, physical attacks aren't called DOS.
A DDOS is just a DOS using multiple machines on the internet at the same time. No need to send buggy packets or something : if a server is built to handle at most 100 page views per second, you take 1000 zombies on the net who will try to retrieve 1000 of times per second the web page and the server will meltdown in the operation. For those who know what it is, the slashdot effect would probably be considered as a DDOS if the melting down the webserver was wanted :)
-
as i said last time this issue came up.
why not, when someone gets kicked the 'join' button is shaded grey for a limited time by trem for that server and its saved into a log or somthing.
-
Does the Slashdot effect still exist?
I thought it lost loads of masses to Digg and the likes
-

yes, slashdot still has enough readers to melt most servers.
-
Someone keeps going onto empty servers, and killing almost all of the other base and most of thier own base and leaving it that way. :x Why can't they leave everything alone?!
-
I did that once.

-
BTW about the AA thing, how can you tell if someone is TKing or just deconning for normal reasons (Moving base, upgrading to teslas, freeing up build points etc.)
