Title: gibs?
Post by: gareth on August 05, 2006, 07:00:17 pm
Wher do you think about gibs for aliens/humans when they die particlualy violently?

Yes, I'd like trem to have gibs, gore, entrails, internal organs, decapitation, dismemberment, disembowelment and oodles of blood splats everywhere.

BUT, they should be optional, perhaps configurable so the individual players can select which gore featuers they want, e.g. on/off options for blood splat decals, gibs, ragdoll (is that possible in trem?), dismemberment, etc...

Just my £0.02

I want skeletal model format (.md5 dunno) So you can cut body parts :D. plus more accurate damage calculations.
I also want a physics engine like ODE to be implemented. wait... physics  engines are not fps friendly :(

one of the things i like about tremulous is it will run on almost any hardware and be playable (unless the aliens decide to abuse the particle engine, then no attacking for me) and it should stay that way.

Gibs would have to be really low polly not to cause lag issues.
And we all know how shitty low polly gibs look, sooooo......NO.

Why do you say that ? Modern graphic cards can easily manage a ton of 20000 poly bones animated models around,  not counting cards from 3 generation back. You can probably find someone to draw a few decent 1000 poly gibs and still get a lot of GPU power. Besides, those who want every inch of performance will probably be able to disable them in the option menu.

It was quite fun going through the gibs list of Unreal 1 and seeing brains, livers, hearths, severed blody heads, arms ...

Why not make them client side since they're purely visual aspects of the game. So then the server only needs to send simple messages such as "spawn x gibs at position y with velocity z" and the client does the rest. I can't imagine that'd consume sufficient bandwith to cause a significant increase in lag.

Furthermore, when a player disables gibs then perhaps this could also tell the server not to send any more gib related information. I've never investigated the source or network protocol of trem/Q3 so perhaps this might not even be a practical solution. I'm just yearning for gibs.

While on the subject of gibbage, has anyone made a scientist in half-life stand under a fire door then pressed the button to close it? Or bound "impluse 102" to their fire key? That's gibbage.

Have any of you forgotten that human buildings create gibs?

5FPS? Well thats why it ought to be optional just like every other game out there that has gibs/etc. As for causing lag, i doubt it, it'd just be client side(just like building gibs are already I'm guessing). Alien buildings also gib, but also leave decals on the walls where the gibby bits hit, so making players erupt into glorious fountains of gore can be done relatively easy afaict.

Edit: As I was writing I had this (great in my mind) idea. You know how alien building gibs cause damage (due to being powered by acid I presume)? Well damn it, a goon's dead body (or gibs ideally, if gibs were added)  should leak/spray acid around for a couple of seconds after death causing very minor damage to passing humans. Think Alien(s) eh?

Hmm, from S1 that would tip the balance towards the aliens. How about this only happens if the alien was boosted when it died? I'd like to see dead or dismembered alien bodies that spray acid blood though, that'd rock.

Exploding Human structures create gibs, and particles. The particles are what lags you, not the gibs.

Yea, I have to agree it might favour the aliens a bit, just too bad it wasn't added in earlier. The boosted state sounds workable, but really I think most of us would be happy with just some flying gore. Simple Q2 style gibs or full blown dismemberment, I don't care. :) Not all of us have wimpy systems that crawl when stuff starts blowing up and it'd be a nice addition to Tremulous.

Trem is a fine game, adding gore would make it lame.

Adding gore would make it *much* easier to make the difference between a live granger and a dead granger :P

Look at the pose of the granger, with a smidgen of practice it's easy.

I agree 100%!

No seriously, someone needs to make a mod that does this.

rofl, the engine already breakes on older machines due to granger-decals, make some more for gibs, breaks the engine even on my computer...
