Title: SPAM! SPAM! XD
Post by: Dino(OWNZ) on August 06, 2006, 06:56:48 pm
Hi all :)

I want to hear the opinion about shooting of Lucifer Cannon repeatedly (commonly known by "lucispam").

I was kicked from the server when I hit the gun repeatedly toward the enemy while moving. The reason was to have abused the game by me. Certainly, I don't think that it is good to shoot the gun at the friend while Friendly Fire is on or use it in the base. However, shooting of Lucifer Cannon repeatedly is effective in the strategy. It attacks the large range. It can avert the enemy's attention not to say they are killed. As a result, the flow of the game can be changed.

Will shooting of Lucifer Cannon repeatedly be a shameful act?

Depends on
- who's doing it
- where it's done
- does it obstruct / kill your teammembers

On our server I hate it. Especially when I get the fallout into my back...

It depends if you're sitting on a repeater at base spamming luci's down the hallway NON-STOP and doing nothing else but rack up easy kills because newbie/noob aliens run into the balls.
OR if you spam them around while attacking or actually defending against aliens..

Caveman, Howitzer, thank you for your reply. :)

Hmm... its like case by case.
I flew over the sky by the jetpack, and was bundling off Dragoon strolled in the floor under the base to the entrance. The alien was driven out though the teammember might have somewhat disturbed. I didnt TK. I did in the floor under the base. Then... ah... :(
The strategy of Howitzer is also interesting.

I will do lucispam while thinking about the effect. SPAM! SPAM! XD
Thank you!!

Apparently rapid luci (firing primary fire at one second charges repeatedly in ANY circumstances) is an exploit, considering the dmg is obscene for the next to no charge. For those not in the know the 1 second charge is about half the power of a full charge, roughly 100-150 dmg. 'That's weak' is the common response to this information, it is not weak when it's rapid fired in your face or there's more than one person in the area.

"But it's part of the game!" - so is building outside of the reachible areas of a map. But you can get kick/banned by doing that too. Just because a bug exists does not give players the right to use it.

so the half damage at 1 sec IS a bug? I would have thought the devs planned it out to be like that.

Just for the record, Mrs. Who's Tremulous videos showing off certain Lucy- and Grenadejumps are still the standard.

However, shooting of Lucifer Cannon repeatedly is effective in the strategy.

LUCI SPAM IS USELESS AND DANGEROUS

Low speed, low damage...any half-brained alien can avoid it..and even a shot or two wont matter much for any big alien.
The only thing you may kill is your wounded teammate who is retraiting after having rushed in alien base.

No it's not when you know what you are doing. First, in a good team you always know where are your friends, or at least, most of the time you know where your friends aren't. This is an important part of fighting in any game : if it moves and your friends aren't in the general location, nuke it :)

So, once you've reduced the risk of killing a teammate, a good luci spam is all it takes to give builders the time to replace missing buildings after a big alien attack.

Hi all, thank you for your reply. :)

I wanted to know whether the SPAM is a shameful act and it is worth to be kicked or not. I see that it depends on the situation for whether the SPAM becomes useful or harmful. And now I read happily the opinions about what kind of situation is the SPAM usefully used and what should be taken care for.

At present, the highest strategy is the luci jump. :P

Are you familiar with rocket jumping?  It's a bit like that, except with the lucifer.  There's been videos of it posted on the forums if you care to look around.

too bad tremulous doesn't have many useful trickjumps, i used to love pulling off the oasis walljump so much in enemy territory (and the following 'wtf?h4x' comments when i planted at both guns). the only 'trick' to the jumps in tremulous is saving enough health to blow up the reactor when you jump the turrets.

And some people see it the opposite way, like, that's a map exploit that makes the game less fun. Truly good players steal a uniform and go in through the door ;).

Seriously though, short-circuit trickjumps have a tendency to ruin gameplay. It's not so much of a problem in a game like Tremulous, where there are no objectives to skip, but it is a pain in ET.

Yes there are, just yesterday I pulled out one and annihilated the alien base like that. It was with my standard loadout of Lucifer + Light Armor + Helmet + Battery Pack but it is often more impressive with
For example on Karith :
- elevator room : enter through the main door and luci jump to the top part of the room. Aliens were strongly defending the room and there was no way to get up there with jetpack and live. A luci jump ( one bonus dead dretch ) and copious luci spam finished the base quickly.
- original human base : luci jump from the ground up to the mezanine. Very useful to flee a tyrant for exemple. Also, if the humans moved the base to the top, allows you to minimise the time it takes to go get health and ammo.

I really would prefer it Tremulous stayed away from the grenade and lucifer jumping.  It reeks of Team Fortress, and I don't like it.

It transcends what the battlesuit is supposed to be able to do and not do.

Thankfully, it can't be done very often before dying.

Tremulous is already friendly with the "Quake Done Quick" guys. Is the alien team that is full of "skill maneuvers" and "trick jumps".

in a large game, it's your own fault for not seeing me sneak up on the roof and take 5 seconds to line up the jump (i know... i need practice), in a small game i would never do it because it's kinda cheap, but either way, how hard is it to put a mine up there, i will probably still make it over the wall, but someone will notice and take out my last 40 health.

Meh.

If there's a tactic that works really well, it just encourages me to find a way round it. When people find an easy routine and follow it as a rule, it's fun to spoil it by changing the way you play in response.

The "lucy spam" is fine. The people that complain about it, like everything else in the game are the ones that dont understand it. High damage for little charge? my arse - just watch how fast you run out of ammo doing it....

The lucy is an interesting gun. Rubbish in the hands of an idiot who at best will spam down a long corridor hitting nothing, and at worst blast fully charged shots into team mates. Absolutely lethal in the hands of a good player who understands when to use each variation on its firing mechanisms.

However, no matter who is using it, its very expensive and has a habit of burning through ammo, especially if you dont have a battery.
