Tremulous without a sniper rifle is like a pancake without a plate.

Its kind of hard to make a decision based on no information.
If the marines know they are likely to face big mean alien/robot/marsupial things that like to get as close as possible in a cramped spaceship/building taking along a fast firing shotgun that just fills the corridor with nasty death very quickly, without damaging the spaceship itself too much, might seem like a good idea.
But it wouldnt be much fun for the alien/robot/marsupial and neither would a Q2 slow firing super shotgun thing or incredibly accurate explosive rounds of extreme pain +3.
Somewhere in between with a reasonable medium range weapon might be a good idea, but most shotguns that are good at medium range just get nastier at close range (CS/Firearms/Q2DM/redfaction and gloom to an extent) and I'm assuming that there will be 'long' ranges, which is unlikely given the q3 engine and screenshots available so rifles would probably have to be most effective at 'medium' ranges anyway.
But if they have omgsokewl flamethrowers anyway...

perhaps something similar (albeit more powerful) than the quake 2 standard shotty? i think it had a spread range of about 5 degrees if it helps (that's just from memory). i can check it out in the code... but you guy's would be more than capable to do that.
but over the sniper rifle?????
a sniper rifle would be a necessity.
just a thought
Edit:
checked the code because of boredom... it seems that it was effectively a 5 degree radius (ok then... it was actually square) but it worked.

I can't imagine wanting any other gun than a shotgun with a dangerous creature hurling towards my head. :o

i completely agree with Jex. listen to him. he is wise.

Getting your friend/brother to vote in the poll is cheating.

I dont think a sniper rifle is going to be very useful. Arent the aliens supposed to be really quick? You need explosives, machine guns, and shotguns.

but without snipers faggotry will be abound

i think shotguns are a good idea. maybe something more like a franchi spas-12 than a sawed off Remington.

Railguns would be good though, to kill stalkers (you know what I mean). Would probably be balanced. Do it the way blizzard did with w3; make adapting to the enemy an important part of the game. Will require teamwork... is good. Would make gameplay much more interesting.
For those of you who haven't played warcraft 3: In w3 units have different kinds of armor and weapon types, such as heavy/light/medium armor and normal/piercing attacks. So if your enemy starts pumping heavy armored knights, you'd better start pumping archers with piercing attack to go through the heavy armor. Units with normal attack wouldn't do much good there. And since knights have normal attack, it wouldn't be a good idea to counter them with units with light armor, or the knights' swords will cut your light armored units to pieces. Archers with heavy/medium armor the ultimate choice? Not possible, since it does not exist (archers have light armor). Better use tanks to take hits from knights, while the archers supporting the tanks cut the knights to pieces. That's teamwork! Something like that and tremulous would seriously own ^^.

Thats an interesting idea Ogun.

Variable damages between different classes allow easy balancing and a nice counter unit and counter-counter unit system. It's used a lot.
One thing which might be nice , would be a humans vs humans and a aliens vs. aliens mode.
-
that would be... wacky.

That I was unaware of. As I'm sure you understand, I'm not talking about something as simple as rocket fire requred to break the hull of a tank or whatever.
Maybe even go even further with the idea. Let's hypothetically implent an extension of this idea in gloom. Some units could have a set of attack types, say drones have thrusting and slashing. Slashing would do more damage against light armored units, e.g. bio...whatever she's called, the female one, and thrusting could be used on heavy armor units - mech and exterminator.
