Title: r_shownormals, and you.
Post by: ziplocpeople on May 20, 2011, 10:48:47 pm
I was wondering if r_shownormals could be enabled for spectator use only, similar to noclip. My reasoning being that
A) Hacks will surface for the GPP/1.2 eventually, and it would help (at least to some degree) with detecting them.
B) Can't do much damage if you're a spectator, can you? =p
C) It'd be nice to have in general, there's lots of things that only work in spectator mode, for example, 3rd person.
D) Why not?

Thanks for reading.

Personally, I don't think any commands should be cheat protected for spectators. They aren't even playing, why can't they have fun looking through walls and doing other things?

I noticed that you can noclip while you are a spectator.  :granger:

A) Hacks will surface are already out for client-side for the GPP/1.2 eventually, and it would help (at least to some degree) with detecting them.

I second this very strongly.
I know some players are already using a custom created client to bypass the r_shownormals restriction on US1.  This would help catch these players and ban abusers.

I told you guys I wasn't lying about using GPP hacks...

On topic: Probably won't happen a lot, but people can ghost for one another :P

This, a thousand times. Spectators can go anywhere, so giving them shownormals isn't going to hurt anything. Even if someone was going to use it to ghost, it'd much more efficient to use teamspeak along with it or maybe even live-stream. Typing simply isn't fast enough, and statements like "above" are too vague for the few situations where r_shownormals would help with ghosting.

Yeah, I forgot to mention someone using a voice communication program or some sort. Sorry about that :(

Whenever 1.2 is released, someone should make a mod where spectators are "ghosts" roaming around the map, I would really be quite amused. Maybe like a glowing distorted alien looking transparent thing, you know, have some fun instead of dying :)

I'd want to be represented by a multicoloured version of the hive swarm insect.

You want to be confetti?

Also, you've made me realise the 'flying alien' the devs don't want is already in the game.

Also, this got me thinking about controlling swarms as an alien (rather than spec) and making the currently unused hovel model some sort of interface station. It was a fun thought. I'd like to think that one day I'll make a horrific abomination of a game based on tremulous.
