Title: She's dead, Jim
Post by: Ingar on June 26, 2011, 11:34:25 am
Last week my PSU died and it probably took the mainboard with it.
I dug out an old computer, and I'll be probably be stuck with it for a while.

Life sucks  >:(

Jesus Christ on a pogo stick. I got my last laptop 4 years ago and it wasn't half that bad. And it was entry level.

I recall my parents spending $1000 on a 900mhz Celeron desktop, it included an awesome 6mb GPU.

My first PC was a Dell that cost $2000 new. 800mhz PIII, 128MB RDRAM (still have the stick), nVidia GeForce 256 (still have that, too). 32MB VRAM.

Ironically, I just got another computer almost exactly like it. 1Ghz PIII, 384MB RDRAM (!), and an ATI Rage 128 PRO. WOW. THE SPEED. By the way, Tremulous performs very lousy under Mesa. Apparently the R128 doesn't have spectacular 3D acceleration. ;)

Sorry to hear about your PSU, Ingar! D:

15 or so years ago, my parent's bought an Emachines PC with an AMD Sempron 2.0ghz, a GeForce 3 series graphics chip with 32mb of vram, and 128mb of ram (now upgraded to 1024mb)

And Loki was your 4 year old laptop bough from a retail store or used? Because my 4 year old laptop has a Core2Duo 2.0ghz dual core with an Nvidia GeForce Go 7400 card in it (128mb vram)

There's some hope: I took out the mainboard, connected only the PSU, a videocard,
one stick of RAM and a PS/2 keyboard and managed to get it booting again!

I just hope she doesn't mind sitting naked on the table while I prod her private parts.

Heh, Ingar, you've got an expressive setup here. Is the CPU cooler made as a push-pull one, by the way?

The cooler is a Zalman Zalman CNPS 9500 (http://www.zalman.com/eng/product/Product_Read.asp?idx=160), it's mounted on a support bracket on the mainboard.
Performance is excellent but due to the upright position it tends to collects tons of dust.

In a few months it will look like this:

@Ingar:
At least you didn't lose your high-effort-imput-ed maps along with it... i hope...

Before i got my mac, and apart from my mum's computer (she doesn't let me play on it), i had two computers: Windows ME (which can't understand the installation file... -_-) and a computer which fries its CPU (fan works, massive amounts of air comming through, so my only solution is to pre-freeze a ice tray and put it on the laptop) and only lasts 2 minutes before it goes slow, and recently i found the problem: only 1/5 of the computer was working properly (100 mb out of 512 was working on the RAM, and the CPU's task manager thing shows it going at 100% when running a file such as notepad/microsoft office...) so i'm quite lucky i actually got the mac for free from school, but it is on loan... :(

While this post might look like necromancy*, unfortunatly it is not. Yesterday evening I returned home from work and my PC refused to boot again. All it does is blinking every led possible, even the network activity leds. I just hope I don't end up with expensive christmas decoration.

* Technically I have already risen it from the dead once before, does necromancy work on undead?
