Although the idea is interesting, there just isn't much use for a glide.
Maybe a basi-sized alien that had a goon-style jump, then flutters its wings at the apex of the jump to then fly up a metre or two higher, ala Yoshi?

Gliding just isn't gonna work though. If it's gonna be useful, it has to be a glide that can be paired with a decent pounce. Like I was saying, a pounce that gives you a Yoshi-style flutter afterwards (where you hit the apex of the jump, start fluttering as you fall down a little, then flutter upwards quite a bit farther), that would allow the longest jump in the game, but making it slow enough to not be too overpowered.
