Title: Why 1.2 and not 2.0?
Post by: Waitingfor2 on August 20, 2011, 06:59:11 am
Please, give me an example if I am wrong...

No application in history has undergone so much development over so long a time to be incremented as a minor revision. Why is this still being called 1.2 and not 2.0?

Because we are all waiting for 1.2, not 2.0.

It's a valid but minor point. I direct you to the wikipedia page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Software_versioning) on it for a sense of the lack of conformity in this area.

The overriding reason is that it's been established now, regardless of why it was originally chosen. So why was it chosen? It could be the development was optimistic, thinking it would churn out versions faster than it did (as (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hofstadter%27s_law) usual (http://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Valve_Time)). Perhaps they consider this a minor update so long as there's anything short of an engine change. Maybe they just wanted to see the second digit reach 2. Whatever the reason, it's their version numbering system and as far as I'm concerned they can call it what they like so long as they continue to develop the game.

Code-wise it's mostly bug fixes, code improvements and changes to tremulous.h.

As far as I know developers can call it the way they want it. They can call it Tremulous 1.1.2 or maybe 1.2 or maybe 2.0 or something alike. The numbering technically doesn't matter much.

Or call it tremulous 10.  Marketing departments have done worse.

welcome to the wonderful world of software development
where application version numbers are random but they generally increase with each release.

I say we call it 3.0 to avoid confusion.

tremulous sucks - "using ancient q3 engine with shi* graphics and shi* stuff etc. etc. etc." - A friend from school. We just need support, like proper support. The only reason why TF2 is suddenly famous is because it became free-to-play and it is running using Valve. If they didn't join steam/valve, they would've died. Thinking of which, we could 'join steam' as a 'free to play' as well.
Tremlos -- there is NO U.
Or we could just name it "TREM game", stands for "Terribly Ridiculous Extraordinary Mighty Granger At..." uhh i can't go on.

Anyways, what matters is Tremulous Devs needs support. It's not like 3 million people still play quake 3 related games.

TF2 isn't suddenly famous. TF2 has been well known/played for 4 years now. They have an extremely active development that I have personally never seen on anything that wasn't an MMORPG. It becoming free is just another things they've done to keep the game alive.

Also, an appropriate comparison would be if a couple of the original tremulous developers (Timbo+1) were to impress some large and successful games company with tremulous and be hired by them. They would go on to make a game that may in some ways be LIKE tremulous, but it would not BE tremulous. It wouldn't be free and it wouldn't be open-source.

*from what i've known/read.

Lots of aussies 'pros' (and some americans and wherever they come from, but not as often noticed by me) tend to have simply high fps, prediction and aiming skills, probably meaning that it is still quiet new to us. Most of our school was started as being COD - the 'good game', to Soldier of Fortune 2 (also on q3 engine suprisingly), to Minecraft, and now starting to become TF2. I only started playing simply because they thought it was good, and it was free.

Anyways Tremulous just needs some support, which comes out free, and stay open-source if possible. A major problem being fixed are the squarish gun models, except there's still a pattern in them: Triangular, and those dome-thingies. (1.1's pattern was bring squarish, and had handles on the top of the gun for no reason except mass driver, blaster and luci.)
TF2 has been well known/played for 4 years now. They have an extremely active development that I have personally never seen on anything that wasn't an MMORPG. It becoming free is just another things they've done to keep the game alive.
I also got a weird feeling TF2 also will start to die out (again, if you said it became free to keep it alive) just like what happened to COD 4 and its series. Well, it isn't doing too bad, but it will eventually die out. The only few choices for game devs is to rapidly improve physics and bugs (and glitches) in the engine, improve graphics and how addicting and how long does the addiction last for. (e.g. MMORPG takes shitloads of time to get better, but unfortunately they have "really good rewards" for playing it - reference from my brother's attitude. Whereas, games like WarHawk [PS3] died because it simply took waaay too long and got boring, and COD didn't have enough variety to it)

Custom models and guns might work? (and require you to unlock them so the player has to play to get the good stuff) But that will cause other problems as player information is kept through servers and ID is kept through qkeys...

Someone please tell me wtf i'm doing, i think i'm getting off-topic.

I can't decide which quote to sig now, the one I have, or this.
Anyway, TF2 went F2P because Valve makes enough money off of in-game items (especially those fucking HATS) that it doesn't matter how many copies of TF2 they sell. They want to get people hooked more easily so they can make money off them in a more effective way.
So what are we going to do? Sell grangers? (http://tremulous.net/forum/index.php?topic=16124.msg229318#msg229318)

I don't think we need financial support. Tremulous is 100% free and should stay 100% free. We just need some developers that actually code tremulous like tremulous is their life. Or allow more sensible coders in.

Servers cost money to maintain. So do some developers. Remember Dolby (the guy who made the original set of sounds)? He was paid to do that. Why else do you think Tremulous takes donations?
Free to play doesn't mean there aren't maintenance costs involved. EVERYTHING costs money in this world, one way or another.

So he was paid to f*uck up the sounds resulting in stopping development because all the sounds need to be replaced?

Hmm, i wonder what's behind that asterisk... I imagine he was asked to sort the sounds for the 1.1 release, which it appears that he did, albeit without paying enough attention to licensing issues.
