Title: Imposters + Botters
Post by: TheMuffinMann on January 17, 2012, 04:10:22 pm
As an admin of the Unlimited Server I have been frequently confronted with the botting issue, while the impostering remained in the background...

Botting has become popular and impostering a more serious threat, to me at least, and I would like to know, whether there are procedures, that can be taken against both...

On the one hand, there is this botting issue.
As we all know, some bots are easy to spot, while others are almost impossible. Depending on the player, whose experience, skill and machine do make up for a lot of gameplay impact, but... How do we know, whether an unnamed player bots or if he's just a skilled player, not wanting to be detected.

On the other hand, there is the impostering problem.
As a senior admin on R Unlimited CZ I have been faced with several imposters before... Just recently they're started to imposter me... I have seen my name in several fashions and colours...
Ranging from Themuffinmannn to themuffinman etc.... Just thousands of varieties.... And now I do fear, that this could affect my reputation on other servers.

Just today I've been told, that a botter with my name is running lose on Offical US 1 and I was not amused at it. Sometimes, it does amuse me, but often... It doesn't... I am a fair player and I do not need to have some fool slander my name, for the sake of his entertainment.

Can any solution be provided to this?

These reports of botters have been kept awfully quiet, where are the names, demos and geoip data?

Names : TheMuffinMann (No I am not reporting myself)
        UnnamedPlayer#1

I have made no demos as quite a lot of the other people have made them... Saliva possibly could have made one of the botter on the offical server...

GeoIp: I still cannot do /namelog on the official server, so i am incapable of proving any IP Address.

The only thing I could do, would be to provide the IP of an botter on the Unlimited server, if I find one.

heh, i dont bother to report my suspicions, because it is hilarious to manipulate bots to teamkilling.  or folks i suspect to be bots, at least.

The only times i tend to think to myself "ZOMG, bot!" it's often followed up with "Oh, hi nux..."

Demos or it didn't happen, and sure, post the IPs of people you really do believe were botting.

If your aim is to absolve yourself of any blame, you're going the wrong way about it. Someone could interpret this to mean you weren't able to take convincing, external demos of yourself while you aimbotted. If there still was any doubt as to whether it was really you, you'd likely want to save your reputation by declaring it an impostor.

THIS ISN'T AN ACCUSATION!

Funnily enough, I think I was in a game where this was happening. I wasn't paying much attention at the time but if you like I can look over my demos (I record every game) to see what happened.

Also:
The only times i tend to think to myself "ZOMG, bot!" it's often followed up with "Oh, hi nux..."

You're too kind. :P

EDIT: I found the relevent demos and it would seem that there was in fact an impostor unless TheMuffinMann got a friend to join the server, declare the aimbotter to be an impostor and subsequently ask for registration to prevent further namestealing. It's just more likely that some guy stole his name.

The 'Nullity' part was also a joke, but I'm not going to condemn muffin for missing this and the megaupload reference. I sympathise with his position.

The occasional lucky/twitchy shot can be indistinguishable from botting. This is why I judge the suspect not on their bot-like shots, but on how they behave in the between time [EDIT: of course if there is no 'between time' and thier making it obvious they're botting, it's a lot simpler]. At least this way I can be more sure I don't ban people unfairly and the only people to slip through the net are those who are willing to pain themselves to use the cheat rarely.

In this case I wouldn't have kicked him: most of the time, he plays just like your standard experienced tremmer. Interestingly enough though, the most suspicious shot I saw occurred after you had already condemned him.
