Title: a new name for TremZ
Post by: /dev/humancontroller on January 22, 2012, 09:53:57 pm
we need to replace "TremZ" with a new name that conforms to the following the design goals:
a couple of additional, not so important design goals are:

a common mistake people make in naming the project is that they chose a name that historically relates to the project or contains "legalese (http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/legalese)", but resembles absolutely nothing to new people who are not familiar with the history or the said "legal" terminology:

the most secure way to create a name meeting the listed criteria is to weave new words, possibly from existing word pieces. for example, one could look up a list of words (a dictionary) and selectively gather words or word pieces that sound epic, and full words from those later on. here's a tip: foreign words often sound very interesting in english (look up a list of foreign words).

a choice of mine is: Arbitry.

as an example for word weaving: someone gave me a list of words of an unknown origin (language): kokon, linnan, menet, menetae, profumo, rokat, rokin, rokka; and my mixture of these is: promekat.

we also somewhat require a new name for the development team. i propose Rendbeni Technologies.

epicly-sounding names like Nocturne and Unvanquished have been proposed. unfortunately, these names are already taken: Nocturne (http://lmgtfy.com/?q=Nocturne), Unvanquished (http://lmgtfy.com/?q=Unvanquished).

How appropriate, Arbitry sounds like what it is: Arbitrary. :D Also I'm fairly sure it fails to meet some of your set goals (for example: how do you pronounce the 'y'? Like an 'ee' or like an 'ah-ee')

I don't know if there's a problem with the current name which has already become fairly well established. Am I to take it you don't like it? Not that I think it's very creative either but as the old addage goes,

A rose by any other name would smell as sweet. A poo by any other name would smell like poo.

how do you pronounce the 'y'? Like an 'ee' or like an 'ah-ee'
like any other word which has been composed with -ry: like circuitry, faggotry, etc.

You seem to be forgetting the simplest examples: Dry, Cry, Fry, Pry, Try, etc.

those are root words, the ry ending is an integral part of them, ie., t is not a word to which you add ry.
find a word that has more than 1 syllable and has a ry ending where the y is pronounced like eye.

I'll retry to decry this 'Arbitry'!

Surely we're going off on a tangent here.

retry
decry
did you just add re and de prefixes to the root words try and cry?

And he got them to be more than one syllable and have an ry ending where the y is pronounced like eye.

let's put it this way: try to gather as much words that have an eye pronounced at the end. my prediction is that they can generally be condensed into a structural rule which does not apply to Arbitry, and vice versa for other ry-ending words. in other words, despite the fact that an evil reader might want to twist the pronouncication of Arbitry to something fancy, the only natural pronouncication is the one similar to theory. this is unlike TremZ, where the capital Z suggests a separate letter (an easy fix for TremZ is to use Tremz); also note that the controversy related to tremzee vs tremzzz is only based on the fact that the inventors of the TremZ word thought differently AND advertised their intended pronouncication after it turned out to be unnatural.

or ATCS for short.

i also nominate this as the name of your development team.

seriously though; convulsive, timorous,or pusillanimous.

This line of discussion has, most certainly, gone awry.

I'm not in disagreement with you that the vast majority of words that end with those letters tend to sound that way. One factor to consider is that the simplest words are likely the more commonly used and that, of those, the one I'd guess is the most common by FAR is also the last syllable of your word.

Yet even if you ignore how words like 'try' are pronounced there's still a very real potential for confusion. For instance, I put it to you that 'Arbitrary' is an often used and mispronounced word. In the same way that people will often stumble over the middle syllable of 'Library' and slur it out as something closer to 'Libry', 'Arbitrary' is uttered exactly like your name for TremZ. It seems pretty likely to me that people will mishear your word as 'Arbitrary' and confusion will result.

Also notable is how I'm from England so I read 'TremZ' as [trem-zed]; adding further ambiguity to how it's pronounced.

you probably mean "Liburry", which is strongly discernable from "Libry".

this may sound stupid, simple and silly, but it is a fork of tremulous, why not name it 'Tremulous2: Reborn/Refurbished/The Rise of the [scientific word for a exo-skeletonal bug with 6 legs and a main body part]' or something like it?

I read 'TremZ' as [trem-zed]
'Tremzed'. Sounds ok.

Being a lazy englishman myself i can tell you that i've probably been guilty of pronouncing it Lie-Brie, which could conceivably be transcribed as libry.

As for TremZ, the capitalisation didn't cause me to pronounce the z separately.

Can we end this dumb-fuckery and just leave devhc to troll himself?

because the latter is full of trolls that have admin permissions.

not everyone has (or wants to have) an account over there.  while D/HC might have "overstepped his bounds" a bit posting this without consent from the rest of the team here, this discussion only benefits the Advancing Tremulous with Computer Science...err... i mean tremz project.  no reason to lock it, if you were to ask me.
