Just to add some more variety to the weapons, I think it'd be great if shotguns were reloaded by the shell and not in magazines like all the other ammo weapons. You press the reload button to start refilling shells, one at a time, this can be stopped before it fills up all 8 shells by pressing fire. That way you have the option of reloading just a shell or two to quickly finish off an alien.
Of course, this would result in some other tweaks in the shotgun, to balance it out like it is now. Reloading all 8 shells would obviously take longer than it currently does (I'm thinking about 4 seconds, 500ms per shell), however it also creates the option of reloading in a SHORTER amount of time than it currently takes by only reloading 1 or 2 shells. And the longer reload time would decrease the damage per second of the shottie, so the cooldown time between shots would have to be lowered or the damage increased.
Anyway, it's not like it's anything major, and it could easily be more trouble than it's worth. But a regular shotgun reload would be a nice addition to the human reload system, imo.

If you look at pictures, the shotgun takes a detachable box magazine.
Reload animations would be good though.

Geez, henners.
I find the "OBJECTION!" to be a bit washed out after awhile on this forum...

....exactly. If it DIDN'T take magazines, this thread would not exist.
And Henners, suggesting a different reload style for a weapon is far from useless. If anything's useless, it's all these objections, which got old after the first dozen. I don't see how you can still find them humourous over and over, although they were pretty funny the first couple times I saw them.

OVERRULED
Seriously though, I kinda like this idea. The only problem I see is that to keep the shotgun the same in all other regards, the reload time for one shell would have to be 1/8 the current time, which would be 0.25 seconds. :-?
That, and it's the 41st century. Pump action might be a little out of place.
-
It may be the 41st century (Moofed) but apparently they haven't yet invented weapons that have nuclear fusion reactors built into them and can fire infinite laser shots at a distance.
... I mean, come on, it's the "41st century!"
Human technological advances really have slowed down a lot, then ;)
Pump-action would be interesting.
-
The humans weapons won't be changed for a while. After we finish making the alien view claws/chopparz we might redo the human weapons and give them actual animations.

I'll only object if a post is utterly stupid (as this topic really is). I'm not responsible for the other objections made by copy cat posters.

Don't Touch The Shotty.
It's sacred.

Ammo casings are out of place next to lasers. I'd think ground combat would be out of place too.
I do prefer shotgun reloading the way Rippy describes, though there are a lot of other, more important things to change first.

If they really stuck to the "41st century" idea, humans would have two buttons:
Left mouse: launch evac ship, leave planet
Right mouse: nuke planet
Aliens win if humans accidentally nuke it before they evacuate. I mean, seriously, in 2100 years we've gone from metal and wood spears/bows/swords, to carpet bombers, nukes and armored tanks. Think of what we'd have after ANOTHER 2100 years.

Agreed. I'd much rather new weapons/evos, first-person arms + reload anims, or new maps (in roughly that order) before having the shotgun reload changed.

i think they used clips instead of shells is 'cause its in the future i think the shot gun should be more of an engineres weapon for more defending... but its still good to take out a small bug here and there

STFU WITH THE STUPID LARGE TEXT

What about two shotguns? One with a clip, one with single shell reloading.
We currently have both, I think we even have automatic shotguns.
About the "it's the 41st century, why are there still projectile weapons?" thing, this is the 21st century, why are there still knives? The answer, I do believe, is that they still have their uses. For example, a fancy new tank with lots of high-tech electronics might be easily stopped by something like a powerful EMP, so largely mechanical tanks aren't superseeded by them.

as i said before...
why single shells? its the future the shells would be loaded inside a clips.

They can be put in a single clip, which is good for some situations, but being able to reload what you need sooner is often better than more than you need later (tyrant almost dead, only needs one or to blasts more).
EDIT: What I mean is that although a technology may be newere and in some ways better, doesm't mean that it completely superseeds previous technologies. Not all food is cooked in microwaves, stove tops and heat* ovens are still often used even when microwaves are avaliable.
* Ovens which radiate heat within them (I would quickly describe how a microwave works, but I can't be bothered).

Why not ? Because single shell reload has advantages on clip reload : you can reload at anytime you want whereas with a clip reload, no same soldier would take two half full clips and make that one full clip on the battlefield :)
Why only shootgun ? Only the shootgun have enouth firepower in a single "bullet" that it is worth it reloading them one by one.

Shotguns have already been around for quite a while now, and it wouldn't be hard to load them in magazines (it's technically called a magazine, not a clip :P). Heck, pump shotguns have attached tubular magazines and it wouldn't be hard to make it so that tubes of shells could be slid into the mechanism. So, it's not difficult to do, but as mentioned it's advantageous to be able to load only what you need. And the other stuff, such as how you can't add together 2 half-used clips, has already been said. (very glad tremulous uses the realistic clip system by the way. I'm so used to the bullet-by-bullet system that at first I was reloading my rifle at every still moment, whether I had 2 bullets left or 28, and I was confused as to why I ran out of ammo so fast.)

I actually don't reload AT ALL in Tremulous because of this.

Oh, I reload when I've about half emptied the magazine (assuming there's no thread of attack in the 2 seconds while I reload). Unless, of course, I've only got a couple clips left, then I use up every bullet wisely.
