Title: Can't fix my brightness level

When I try to change the brightness level, it just shows the new brightness for a few seconds and then goes back to default (I think) which is way to dark so I can't see anything!

I'd like to be able to play this game again! :)
Help would be appreciated!  :)

What operating system are you using? Have you tried fiddling with the variable directly (r_gamma)?
