Title: Shutting down MG resources
Post by: khalsa on November 06, 2013, 04:34:17 pm
Greetings All,

I am announcing the end-of-life for all of the MG resources I currently host. I will be shutting down everything on or around Nov 20, much of this stuff I will likely be deleting as well. If you want anything from these resources, please download them now. I'm happy to provide tars of whole directories if an interested party wants this stuff for a more legitimate reason.

I'll be updating the below list as I find more stuff:

I'll check on this thread occasionally, but not daily.

It's finally occurred. I was tempted to play but I think that chapter has ended in my life.
Thanks for hosting everything, you made age 17 to 20 a good time for me.

Talk to some of us at Unvanquished, we'd be interested in hosting an archive of some of your data as part of our shared history.

Well, it's been fun, Khalsa.  I'm currently pulling down all the maps and mods I can get my hands on from MG, so I'll have a copy of them.  If anyone needs them, PM me.

I enjoyed the Unvanquished although it was in the craziness when the code was developing but the assets were frozen :)

Can we like request for another master? like q2servers.com or something?
I don't want to have to favourite-everything because my favourites list doesnt work

Also, will apelsin continue working? (it's a type of browser, I have no clue if it uses master.trem.net but it certainly works now even though master.trem.net can't be fetch via browser)

edit: Some of those "not dead" links are actually dead

This brought back memories too:

note: you're requesting a 2nd master server.

There are 5 slots available for the client so ....
Maybe we could leech off master.unvanquished.de and ask them folks... i doubt they'll do it though :/

edit: 20th November is when I have another exam. Can't it be after? I'm still in my study period :(

I've copied everything(?) from releases, downloads, and archive to my own server.
Hosting of these files (http://mg.kdude63.com/) will likely continue indefinitely.

I can't let all this trem history vanish. :c

I want to thank to all MG folk. Without them, Tremulous could live longer, erm I mean, would have suffered longer.
Anyway, at least they posted a news.
.... another one bites the dust!

Interesting...Who does this mean will manage Tremulous.net (and who has the rights to the domain)? Does this leave anyone with the 'rights' to Tremulous? Does this leave anyone on the/a dev team? I have been interested in bringing back SST and perhaps doing up some advertising and perhaps 'bringing it back to life', if you will...

Fortunately, holding a domain is cheap.
Unfortunately, hosting is not as cheap.
Considering this I believe they will keep the domain until the end of times.
Khalsa/MG realized it has been a waste of resources.

You might have notices that the current version of Tremulous on github is stable.
On the other hand, it is not possible to release a full data set if you care about laws and foss. Problem here is, as we all know, sounds.
Unvanquished has the same problem but they don't care about any of them.

Confess, in my opinion, the best option is to let it die and live on.

I've always wondered how the sounds were arranged. I don't see any way the community will be satisfied with the unvanquished's granger substitute sounds, I don't think anyone even knows how the sound was produced (things like marauder and goon we already know, baby polar bear and camels that is)

The game, the name, the website...Etc. Rather then letting it die and go unmanaged, it could really become popular (especially with social media) with some simple updates and invites/etc...But this would require forming a development team if there isn't one, acquiring Tremulous.net and access to the website, centralizing everything, getting server operators on board to assist in 'cleaning up' their servers...Kicking off unused servers from the master list, etc..
Title: Re: Shutting down MG resources
Post by: ULTRA Random ViruS on November 15, 2013, 07:11:52 am
If they everyone found new legal sounds and the community was fine with it, I guess they *could* continue dev'ing but that hasn't happened. :( Also, *most* of the 'new' models has been ported into unvanquished so currently aside from gameplay, that's the closest you can get to tremulous 1.2/1.3.

i've created another copy/archive for whatever reason, except for the history of the Git repositories (http://git.mercenariesguild.net/ (http://git.mercenariesguild.net/); only some HEAD tarballs were saved), as the server seems to refuse cloning attempts.

copies shall be transmitted upon request.

I wonder if Trem will still hang around for years like Gloom does.... kind of hard to kill a very addictive game, some damn fools won't give up on it.

Speaking for myself, I play occasionally on AA when it's populated. I'm most likely to play at 12:30, 17:00 or 21:00 (UTC+00:00). If us damn fools could learn each others habits a little we have a better chance of playing games together many years down the line, even if it's just the occasional small game for the sake of nostalgia.

Odly enough the only reason why I don't play on AA is because my gun doesn't shoot straight. (And yes, i'm using the pure client, the server only allows pure cgame.qvms anyway, wtf is going on)

Ah, good times, I remember Trem being one of the best free FPS games in 2006 to 2007. Shame it never got updated. :-\
Playing on the Derelict servers was fun, I dont know if anyone remembers a user called Megabite, he used to run his own website for mods and maps.

Gloom isn't entirely dead yet either, and it's older still. Somehow, a few diehards hang on.

It's sad that Tremulous never attracted the kind of enthusiastic long-lasting effort into development, and the time required, that it needed. At least the game has accumulated plenty of mods, and there are still a lot of servers online. A few of which continue to be intensely active. That'll keep my interest in the game for awhile longer.

Pity that the GPP version hasn't really caught on. It needs more work, but the most recent commit was at least 4 months ago. Has it been abandoned too?

Some 1.1 servers are still pointing to the mg site, so I decided to quickly hack together a script ("super secret project (http://tremulous.net/forum/index.php?topic=16876.msg235015#msg235015)") to make it really incredibly easy for even the laziest of server operators to have working downloads again. Just
Code: [Select]
set sv_wwwBaseURL "http://betaserv.tk/mg"
sets sv_dlURL "http://betaserv.tk/mg"

There are two problems though:

http://betaserv.tk/mg shows
Code: [Select]

http://betaserv.tk/mg (http://betaserv.tk/mg) shows
Code: [Select]
Are you sure  was on the Mercenaries Guild site?
The idea is that requests from Tremulous for real files will be properly redirected (unless there was some error on my side, in which case, please inform me, but not until then). E.g., if a server has sv_dlURL = "https://betaserv.tk/mg" and the server switches to atcs3, clients who do not have the map will send a request for https://betaserv.tk/mg/base/map-atcs3.pk3 (https://betaserv.tk/mg/base/map-atcs3.pk3), which will be redirected appropriately (https://betaserv.tk/paklist.html#map_atcs3_pk3). Requesting https://betaserv.tk/mg (https://betaserv.tk/mg) directly is silly (hence not being a link).

Requests for https://betaserv.tk/mg (https://betaserv.tk/mg) now do closer to what you might expect. Links are based on indexed files from the MG repository; any weird names or duplicate files are preserved. If you have any questions or come across any errors, tell me about it.
A couple notes: links that do not work are probably for files it doesn't currently have any valid links for. Additionally, a few (10) indexed files seem to have not been valid on the MG site and are excluded from the list.

Edit: betaserv.tk was broken for a while and is now fixed. Sorry for that.
