You get spambots the same places you get viruses/worms from.
Most of the time its not the company directly, but someone who is somewhere down the line who maybe gets $$ for refferals (when people click the links), or some kind of profit cut through a reseller account. They also make a good deal of money off of those "Claim your Free ****" scams because they can sell your e-mail to spammers or other "Free" givaway sites.
Spamming spammers doesn't really work. 999% of the time they do it via proxy.. so your not really hitting them directly anyway.. and if you could trace them down they probably have access to someone who has enough zombies/bots that they would DDOS you or your site. This happened with Blue Security recently.. the spammers have botS.. they can easily take out your bandwidth with them.. retaliation via spamming them isn't going to work.
The best thing to do.. is NOT CLICK THE LINKS.. just ignore them, don't e-mail them or PM them or anything. Tell a mod if you see spam and we will lock it down. If they stop getting clicks.. maybe they will drop off a little.

:P
like c|net... i would find there contact list and spam them telling them to remove there bots 'cause they suck... or somthin
wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_crawler)
corporate companies do it :-?
i wish they would leave nice forums like us alone

DIGI_Byte would be the perfect counter-spammer lol

Cnet should not have any bots on their site.. I'm pretty sure they don't.. please do not spam Cnet..
Crawlers are not spambots, though spambots usually use some crawler stuff, and spammers can make corrupted crawlers that hunt for e-mails. Crawlers are usually good(its how you get indexed in search engines) unless you want to hide information. If you want to hide from crawlers do a search on " robots.txt ".
It is illegal to spam. Companies do not do it directly, and most of the time they don't want spammers hawking their goods.. the spammers are hard to track down, and quick to start back up again.. its hard for them to shut down spammer accounts for good.

well ifso why would that spam you locked be a spambot which is a webcrawler designed to spam 'Forum/General20%Discussion'
and it supported C|net!
BTW congrats on the mod and yes i'd love to spam the spammers
in the words of steven hawkins 'spam the fuckers'

... urh.. are you talking about "hot news"?... I changed the text to www.cnet.com.. it was full of spam links before.. I'll make a note to mention when I do that in the future  .
Not all spambots are crawlers.. a lot of them are programs that mimic users and access server scripts directly in order to make accounts and automatically post spam to multiple forums at the same time.
If you decide to spam them, and I really really insist it is useless and never a good idea, please do not mention this site or lead them back here.

yea i know the worst ones are the online casino and porn sites
Hey remember that girl who is russian wannabe model and used a spambot to sell her portfolio!?
i don't recomend changing them, if you do just remove it all say 'content removed' instead of giving another web link as ppl like me would get misguided and ask Why is C|net sending bots...
i'll pm you a link

DeviantArt has a series of bots on various profiles, you could probably get one to work with phpBB.

... Interestingly enough the spambots register a lot of accounts it looks like.. I noticed a name that registered the day before that just seemed spambotish and lo-and-behold it actually spammed a few minutes later.. so today since it has been sort of quiet I thought i'd see if i could spot any spambot names... man.. there are a lot of them, so obviously they aren't all posting.... so they still get their links somewhere if they just don't bring attention to themselves..
just so I can NOT open pandora's box here.. if you feel like seeing how many you can spot, please do not click on links.
If you go to one that looks spammy, and they have an ambiguous website PLEASE DO NOT CLICK ON IT..
Not much can be done I imagine since "buy viagra online cheap" might actually come into the forums and start posting quality contributions or something later on.. but.. thought it was interesting anyway.

well said PIE
sounds like fun too. :D

I've changed the captcha used for registration, so hopefully we'll get less spam from now on, assuming it defeats whatever OCR they use. Of course this does nothing about the existing spam bot registrations so there will still be some posts until these registrations get deleted. (If anybody fancies going through the member list and sending me a list of all the spam bots, feel free ;)).
