The blaster is very effective as a 'standard' weapon, a knife would only complicate things needlessly. Besides, like stated above, we got ourselves a fancy bzzing knife already ;)

Yea, like that one guy who got his arm stuck underneath a boulder, and he cut it off with a pocket knife, then fights off a bear with one arm. That's badass.

Sword, axe crowbar ;) would be neat... but you'll never convince them to add it since there is a painsaw already..

But i must say that the paisaw is just as badass against dretches as a knife would be; For once, i dont think the paisaw is easy to aim at that dretch, and you wouldn't have one arm free to fend off the dretch.
In my opinion, figting dretches with a painsaw is much like trying to kill flies with a chainsaw.
so... ..conclusion reached: the painsaw is WAY more badass against dretches than the knife will ever be, and just badass enough against tyrants.

It reminds me of the Chaos mod for Quake 2. There was a "kick" key which you could use to kick around other players, ammo boxes, weapons, skulls and even rockets for the more adventurous lot.
And on that topic, 1 skull was generated for each frag in the game. There has been tales of CTF flag defenders playing a few soccer games between them with the skulls of fallen attackers :)

Then dretches should have a horn on their feet, so you back into a dretch and they stab you through the chest.

Yet another stupid idea, the painsaw is the cheapest weapon you can buy at a ultra cheap $100 (exactly half of what you get for fragging a granger) and as others side the blaster is the only side weapon the humans need. A knife doesn't fit into the Tremulous world and no experienced player would use a melee weapon weaker then the extremly affordable painsaw. I mean what would you use it for when you can always get a painsaw?
Oh and the game doesn't need a advance painsaw.

I think kicking would be a great idea! Just like it was in Duke Nukem 3D :D
Imagine kicking a dretch that is jumping towards you!
And of course there should be some toilets (same as in DN 3D of course :wink: ) that you could kick to relieve your frustration

Or we could make the painsaw free. That wouldn't affect balance in any way what-so-ever. Painsaws suck tbh imho lol irl.
I've always thought whacking aliens with my construction kit would be more effective than a blaster. Of course I'd break it and have to go get a new one. But it'd totally be worth it.

Painsaw can't be free, it would be too effective late game. I wouldn't mind the painsaw being a holdable like the grenade or something so you can get a regular weapon + painsaw. To balance, once you switch to it, you have to discard it to switch back to the regular weapon.
I can't think of a good situation for a knife outside of ammo-less egg killing.

Hell, I vote for tremma to be unable to buy a granade when he carries the saw, just to balance things out. :P

And I vote to allow me to carry unlimited grenades. I mean if you all fall on them to give me enough credits to afford 8 grenades (thats the max can get with 2k credits minus saw, helmet, and armor :P) it's not my fault 8) .

Yeah... The painsaw range is to small. Humans carying painsaw must get to close to an alien (I mean the smaller ones) to hurt it - the painsaw should give some insurance that attacking small aliens is less risky than attacking the bigger ones. All in all it is a painSAW, not a "painknife".

I still think mouse2 of the painsaw should be a jab. You could jab every 3 seconds or so, and that'd momentarily multiply your range by something like 1.5, or even 2.
And temple... isn't painsaw ammo-less egg killing? :P

there should be an advanced painsaw, where 2 people can alt-fire to make the power go from one to the other, killing stuff between. take skill, but can slaughter stuff.

you do realise that painsaw already kills a tyrant in 2 seconds, adv goon in barely over 1 second, and everything else in 1 second or less. any more range and the painsaw becomes the best melee weapon in the game, and humans will be able to take on any alien with it, after they get a helmet, in fact, there would be pretty much no reason to get any weapon other than painsaw.

Yes and its your only weapon. I don't the current limit on painsaws as main weapons or limited range is a problem. I just wouldn't mind something more for the solo human commandos out there that dare leave the base. Maybe an advanced painsaw with 1.5x more range and a 300 credit cost (or more).

Or maby I haven't pressed the mousebutton hard enough...
My experiance with painsawing tyrants is that after 2 seconds I was already dead and the tyrant have always managed to retreat from the base safely even when under heavy fire (or maby the fire was not heavy enough...)

Yeah, painsaw does 200 damage per second, more than any other weapon in the game. Tyrant = 400hp = 2 seconds, OM = 800 hp = 8 seconds. The reason you die a lot is probably because
a) Pretty much one slash and you're dead, unless you've got a bsuit
b) Remember the very short range, often you'll be a little too far back to be able to saw

Heh, the painsaw does have a rather short range.
It makes defending vents as a basilisk so much more interesting because the basilisk actually has more reach than the painsaw.
I think I prefer the short range with the psaw, though. It's really a nasty base zapper. It's plenty strong, and it's one of the few things the basilisk is actually good for.

so being glanced while zipping by would'nt automatically kill... ok :)
