Title: A Ban too far...
Post by: Dissapointed and Banned on September 03, 2006, 03:39:04 am
Before I go into depth about what I am about to say now, I need to explain something. I am a simple law abiding player who believes the rules are placed in the game for the benifit of all and preventing the game from degenerating into mindless chaos. With this mindset, one may be suprised to find out that I do indeed have a life ban on |SST| TREMULOUS, what would be considered the main server.

It was my very few first hours of downloading the game that I realised that this game, although been fantastically invovative and cleverly bringing out the feel of Aliens, that I came to the game with an insufficent ammount of knowledge. I was asking questions, and creating solutions for them when I received scornful responses due to my lack of knowledge.

The battle on Advanced Combat Simulator had continued well past the 30 minute mark and the human base had become deeply congested with turrets and tesla generators, it was on the brink of fall. After dying multiple times to Tyrant raids, I was confused on how to combat the immensly powerful units as it seemed no one on the 34 player server was willing to tell me.

I realised that a grenade was possibly the one thing that could stop a pack of them in their tracks, so I simply loaded out with a grenade and a rifle on a mad cap suicide rush to hopefully reduce the number of tyrants that were mauling our base consistantly.

As the Tyrants swarmed in through the main entrance, I pressed the enter button that would be the end of my character and my playing of the game. For a few fleeting seconds nothing happened, suddenly the chat menu exploded with reports for teamkills and destroyed structures.

In the last 4 seconds of playing the game, all I had to time to type was "Oh shit" before the ominous message of lifetime ban from administrator DHRUVINATOR {SpIKeRS}.

A boot would have been too soft, so would a 1 day ban, but a life time ban, for a stupid mistake a new player made in an attempt to solve a problem that no one would inform him over? Too far, most certainly.

I really was just as suprised by the explosion as my fellow teamates, and I am honestly regretting I did it.

What can I tell my friends, who wanted for me to find out if the game was good enough for a social game together, about this game? "Great game hindered by zealous moderators?"

What do you think?

I suggest you play on AKKA, Durklurkers Lair (Friendly Fire off), or SFI. People on all of these servers will be willing to help you. Try SFI or Durklurkers Lair first, because FF is off and they are smaller. SST is the most retarded server out there, dont play in it. After you get better in Durk or SFI, go to AKKA...more people, nicer than SST.

Sounds like you're better off not playing on that server , anyway. Teamkills are impossible to avoid with FF , and votes to kick teamkillers (not griefers that is) are regularly shrugged off.

That said , the grenade is meant for offense. It is best used against clusters of acid tubes , right before you saw the overmind and eggs.

no one has any way of telling you appart from someone who would do that intentionally (and there are too many people who would). i would recommend not playing on sst at all, but for different reasons. you should probably find one of the sst admins and explain the situation to them politely, and ask them to lift the ban.

We get a lot of griefers in SST, which made us paranoid after a while. If we see someone nading the base, the first thing we will think is "fu***ng griefer!". DHRUVINATOR should have taken in consideration that you were actually a newbie when asking questions about the game, and not just one of those silent-and-dangerous newbie.

Go to http://ssthosting.net/forum/viewforum.php?forum_id=4 and ask for a ban removal.

Hey guy, dont be so depressed :)

If you thought "|SST| Tremulous" was the "main server" of Trem just because it has the highest player limit you re seriously mistaking. The game is hard to balance, but the dev did manage to balance it for game with about 16 players. That's why 99% of servers have a limit of 12 to 25 players. To keep the game balanced.

However, the admin of SST decided to try setting the limit very high, to satisfy some players who wanted a lot of frags. To try to balance the thing he also raised the number of build points. This made his server very popular,  but it is in no way the "main server". Some players dont wanna play on SST, because they dont consider it a normal Tremulous game. SST is more like the only exception in the general rule :).
With the high players limit, you see things on SST that wouldn t happen in a regular server. Your grenade wouldn t have made so many TK  on a regular server (but it would still have been considered griefing and probably treated as such), because you dont have so many buildings on them.

So, do as Basilico says and hope they deban you, but try others servers as well ;)

SST is NOT the server for new people I'm afraid. There are a lot of people on there sure, but that also means they don't have time to/want to stop and tell you how to play or what to do... and with FF things get much worse.. you've probably noticed this..
Feel free to drop by the }MG{ server whenever anyone is on (particularly }MG{ members) and we're more than glad to help out.. its what we do.. you'll find that smaller servers usually people will be a lot more helpful.

I'm ashamed to admit it.. But I did something similar once.. Tyrants galore, so i stripped down to all but a grenade and ran at them, tossed it just as one charged and saw the grenade hurtle back into the base.. it didn't kill anything actually thank god.. but since then i've never have and never will use it for something like that again..

You'll probably get your ban lifted.. I wouldn't worry about it much..

My normal grenade bind is this:
Code: [Select]
bind g "sell gren; itemact gren; buy gren"

A month or so ago, I discovered two things rather embarrassingly:
1. the computer I was using this bind
Code: [Select]
bind g "itemact gren"and I still had a grenade (I thought I had used it)
2. the server I was on had friendly fire off

But I don't think anyone (except the 2 or 3 teammates that went flying across the room) noticed

Just to let you know so you dont feel bad, Tremulous was ment to be played with no more than 16-24 people at max for best gameplay.

If anything, the "main" server i would say AKKA is if anything.  AKKA has been around mostly since the beggining, and WAS the high-player server (although only 24 people could acutally play at one time) at the time.  SST came along, and decided to have a 56 player server.  Not that this is bad or anything, but that server is really ment for "do some crazy shit and mess around alot on the side" than for playing actual serious games.

As for your Tyrant problem, remeber:

1.  The best gun against tyrants is the Chaingun hands down, allthough a full lucy blast does to 250 damage if it hits.  Shotty is good too, seeing as if every pellet hits, it does 56 damage, and the painsaw is good also for base D (and somtimes assaults against tyrants), as it does alot of damage really quick for a cheap price, if your daring enough.

2.  Remeber that they lack alot manuverability.  For the most part, good human dodgers can easily walk around and avoid most Tyrant slashes by simply circle-strafing around.

3.  If you hear ANY alien cry and run away, including tyrants, its usually a good idea to CHASE THEM, because that measn they are low on health and trying to run away to get healed.  Do what you can to stop this.  If they try and attack you in self defense, you might hopfully be able to even eaily dodge them because they will panic about being killed instead of being forcefull when they have full health.

also as for a new server, beer garden is a good place, lots of vets there, and if im on there as well, i'd be happy to answer any questions about the game.

First off I think it's very lame to post without using your real ingame-name.
If you have issues then do it like honest people, with your name and stand by what you write.

Second I'd like to say that your ban saved you quite some more grieve in later games. Admins that ban noobs for an unintentional mistake like that have no bussines working a public server.
While it's true that it's their own server and they usually pay for it, they are god there. But what use is a server that gets no new players? *shrugs*

But the lifetime ban was not deserved imho.
Just like this thread has no bussines here, it shoult have been made on the {spike}-homepage, if they have one now .)

Actually I have found that not to be the case.  I've been kicked several times.  No reasons given even though I asked.  I could not even get basic questions answered.  There was no TKing going on.  The server was not full.  No deconning.  To this day I have no idea why I was kicked.  I found it a rude and very un-hospitable place and will not go back again.

Try a server with admins on them. Mostly they'll stop randomn voters, although admins can make mistakes too

You've had some bad luck then Diggs. I play on Beer Garden, and I've found it to (generally) be a very well maintained place (although for some godforsaken reason, noobs tend to like my team very much *laughs*)

If you're a NEWBIE (and not a NOOB) who actually bothers to ask and/or listens to freely given advice from a bored builder (That would be ahhh me. :P) then you are more then welcome ANY DAY OF THE WEEK to join whatever game I'm on. I'm more than willing to teach anyone the nuances - An average person who knows what he's doing is 5000000 x infinity better then a horde of n00b dretch swarms.

What you did was plainly rude. Entering a fast paced game, no matter how many players are on the server, and asking "basic questions". TBH you should have at least read the very fine manual. It can't be the objective of the game to educate every new player, or answer their questions if they are to lazy to even get the basics out of the manual.

But to be kicked by an admin and not be given a reason is really rude.

dont worry about it

read a bit of stuff on the forums and you wont be noobish for long

just do as more experienced players say

lifetime ban is a bit harsh imo

play on the MG server if you want some help, we are willing to teach you a few things :)

SST is mental and only for getting ridculous scores. games with 15 tyrants and 23 battlesuits with lucifer cannons are not normal  :P

Asking if the builder needs help with repair while he builds is my effort to communicate.  Asking basic server settings is also something not in the manual which is sitting beside me, is 35 printed pages long and I have read cover to cover.  I guess I can see why you are called caveman.

From what I have read (which is all the stickies and the last 10 pages or so of this forum), I thought Beer Garden is a quality place to play and should/will give it another try.

Don't worry man you'll cotually find the game is funner on smaller servers.  but Durvanater is a real douche I'm banned to for trying ot move the reactor out of the open.  I told them they didn't ackonodledge me.  Then I go to get the moment it goes down I'm banned for deconning by him.  Geeze that guy needs to loosen up.

Dhruv was overhasty in that ban.
Even Lava Croft (Notoriously the most bitchy admin ever) would not, as far as I know, permaban a newbie for what apears to be a quite impressive grenade.
I know I would have aplauded.
Now, had you been using 'bind g "buy gren itemact gren";', which is a favorite of mine, that might've been a cause to permaban.
Though, it can be highly effective if the ground is swarming with bugs. ;D

One thing i find funny here is that all the people who call sst the worst server are usually the players who either play regularly, or got moderated in the past. We have re-evaluated the ban file, and cleared up quite a few, so if you had a ban, you could probably come back now.

there is no such thing as a permanent ban, only a 3 month ban, that's about how long it takes for you to get a new ip on most broadband connections (it can be much faster, but you won't have much luck keeping it longer)
