Well, I always end up posting random update pictures all over the place, so I thought I should start my own thread where I'll post random pictures of what I'm working on.
Edit: Some of the larger pics and all the videos have been removed cause sourceforge got mad at us for using so much webspace :oops:

Okay, so here's my first update:
Timbo just put in some code for the jetpack, so I quickly whipped up a model to test it out:

you can also see the chaingun over there... my skinning job is crap, but luckily stannum is going to do it for me :)
oh... and I guess you can see the new head I'm working on. Its based on one of crylar's sketches. right now its using sarge's skin, but sometime some one should make a new skin. I messed up the bottom part of the head so I took the bottom part of the helmet I'm making and put it there.
I guess you guys might also want to see more of the head and new helmet, so I'll post those next :)

If you look closely, theres a small line that goes through the red part of the red lens'. It scrolls down and repeats, just a fun little thing I added. The red also glows in the dark :D

and theres the new helmet. Jex did the skinning, and again (if you look closely) you can see sarge's face in there...hopefully to be replaced :P The shading on the helmet seems to be a bit messed up, but it won't look like that normally.
Oh, and thats the pulse rifle being held there. I skinned it, but I think Jex will fix it up :)
well, I think thats all for today, maybe tomorrow I'll post some pics if I do some work on the big mofo :)

oh and I'm Soooo desperate to see the red glowing eyes in the dark....
thinking of deleting a few lights sources just for that ;)
by the way, the chain gun is a pretty sweet model :D
and for you guys sitting in anticipation at the mods release.. let me just rub it in that the Jetpack is Sooooooooooo Fun to use :D

yay! timbo fixed the jetpack and flame thrower up real nice. I also made a little jet that comes out of the jet pack when you turn it on...

So thats me flying around and spraying the alien hivemind with flames...you can see the flame thrower isn't skinned yet, but jex is working on that. You can also see one of the icons that jex made for the jet pack.

In this one, I tried to think of the ultimate sniper. So, has a jetpack to fly up to a great sniping location, a helmet that has a radar in it to tell you when aliens are getting near, and a nuclear powered mass driver that still needs to be skinned :P You can also see jex's new icon for the helmet in there

And lastly, I just took this pic cause I thought it looked cool :) Thats the advanced contruction kit he's holding there, btw. Almost the same as the normal one, but it has an extra screen on the side, a shader that makes little white particles flow through the main body's blue section, its a little bigger, and it can build quite a few more structures :)

Its slightly manipulated, basically just the fuzzyness around the eyes. I didnt like the jagged edges...
and I'm not sure if you could get a good view of the mass driver in that pic crylar, here's a view from the side:

Ok, I accually imported crylars sketch into 3ds max so it would be more accurate. although I changed the number of legs he has :D I'm not quite sure what to do with the back legs. they look kinda awkward :-?

Sorry, I don't really have anything new to show everyone...but I finished skinmapping the mofo today, and have the bones setup to be rigged. I think later today I'll try to work on cool legs :)

[edit] Ok, I've worked on "cool legs" so I guess you people get some screens, but let me warn you, its STILL A WIP!!!! Something went wrong when I mirrored and welded the thing together and now it looks like a frog man :P Hopefully this can be fixed. The hands/feet are a bit messed up too, so plz bear with me.

yeah, I guess its supposed to be armor of some sort... the render made it look too rounded though...I also was wondering if I should get rid of them, but it looked funny when I took the front one off so how about this:

yeah, it didnt turn out right... but I guess we want 6 legged aliens anyways, that one didnt really fit the theme we have going :-? Anyways... I put a head on the soldier. I think it looks like a beaver head stuck on to a spider, but the others seem to like it :P

Just hoping to add some inspiration in making tremulous aliens as scary as possible. Grossest creature I could find.

I almost want to try to get someone else to do the aliens, I cant seem to do much with them :(
But electro (our new mapper) wanted me a make a map object, and that was more my style. :D So here's a couple shots of it. I doubt the glass will look that nice ingame...although it looks a bit messed up there. Anyways, we're going to get some liquid in there and an alien to float around for some fun map ambiance.

bah! its too quiet around here, I thought you guys would be mildly interested in my map model. but no! Now I have to post some random stuff....

It has a skeleton, and mop is working on a skin, while ravvy is doing the animations. So I just played around with the skeleton and got this :P Oh... the general public probably doesnt know who those 2 people are. Well, Timbo sent out a call for help over at polycount and we got ravvy, and I think mop was just some guy thats on a irc channel somewhere. But both are very good :)
I've been working (that real type of work that gets me money so that I can afford a place to stay and some food) and I can't get as much time in for trem. :(
But it looks like we need more fans.... well, maybe we can wait until the first release for the fans, but we do need to do quite a bit of play testing.... Maybe timbo will recruit some testers :)
[edit] m123, I think we're trying to kinda stay way from the spider kind of aliens. Although that soldier is a bad example... on paper it looked more like a beetle :/ Thanks for the thought though :) [/edit]

Already figured it out about the spiders.
Fans will probably come if the mod is good. But a little advertising won't hurt and better no months of no updates. If it wasn't for Timbo updating the code every so much time, I would have thought this mod dead some time ago.

yeah, having been a long time fan myself, I was always hungry for screenshots. Thats probably why I'm posting so many :D
Speaking of which.... I had today off from work, and Timbo had suggested (jokingly) that I should make a new human player model so that the new blaster sidearm could be a one handed weapon and not look funny with the sarge model (who is made to hold weapons with both hands), so of course I get bored and started making the model. And it turned out pretty good to my surprise.
I always seem to get things right on the first try and never again...
Of course a few things have to be tweaked, but I thought a screenshot would be nice for all you fans out there.

mmmk, so his hands need a little work, also the elbows, and boots. I'm thinking that I might make him a little taller too. The model matches a reference I used, but because of the armor it makes him look a little wide.

IMO for the glowing eyes you should make some faint red flares attached to the eyes somehow... it'd get red of the problem of the sharp edges in the dark... and look pretty damn creepy!
Also... any hints for us n00b skinner wanabees on how to get the cool faded look around the edge of a face, for example on that rifle render you whipped up?

hm, I don't really do any skinning, thats mainly jex's department. But the one skin I did make (and needs to be replaced) I just used an airbrush for the edges. but that can get tedious very quickly...and it still doesn't look good unless you're jex :P
Im still not sure about that head.. it might be replaced, also I'm not sure if we could attach flares to models...maybe I'll ask timbo

I've never skinned anything before, but I think (in Paint Shop Pro at least) there are tools called smudge, burn, and blur which can be used to change the brightness and stuff.

eeep, I haven't updated with another pic in quite some time now... so today I was feeling bad about not having done anything for a while and looked through crylars concept sketches, picked a head, and started working on it. I really like how it turned out...but I can't think of a body to put it on to :(

It kinda reminds me of predator, but I guess thats ok :) Since this class (chimera) has lightning types of attacks, I can have some fun with shaders. One of them being little bands of electricity flowing in-between those two things hanging off it's head.
Timbo's also working on a nice feature for this class. Since this class sits in the middle and has wall-walking for the lower classes and big evil killing land-dwelling classes above it, this class has something in-between. It'll will be fairly fast, fairly powerful, and instead of wall-walking, it will have wall-jumping!
This wonderful idea of mine means that the player can jump to a wall and press jump again to jump off of that wall in the direction your corsshair is pointed. Of course if the second jump gets you to another wall you can proceed to jump off of that and so on. This ability should add yet another very exciting dimension to the alien gameplay experience. :)
(note: there might be some changes made in how exactly this works, timbo needs to figure out how to do it, and then probably quite a bit of play testing needs to be involved...)

secondly: Wall Jumping sounds Fantastic \o/
I hope timbo experiments with a few ways of making it work..
jumping in the direction of the crosshair can be useful but also a little confusing..
I can see that if the wall jumping is used to get somewhere difficult, perhaps in running from an attacker, it would be very useful to see where you're jumping...
but if you are doing the attacking, maybe your enemy is down a corridor and you use the wall jumping to confuse him while closing the distance, it could be prefrerable to be continulously looking forward - and maybe using the movement keys to determin the angle of jump (probably slightly harder to get the mechanics going in that one though)
- how I'd do that one is to have the player running forward, then to jump off the wall on the left he'd run parrallel to it, then jump and use strafe to move into it, then jump and strafe in the opposite direction to jump off(where the forward movement would still be in effect, a slight arc would be needed in the height of the jump, and the distance of the jump would be determined by how long the jump key was held down before releasing)
just a thought,

Saw this thing on the Dicovery channel that once a creature reaches a certain size, having more than 4 legs becomes ineffecient.

:D thanks! Ok, so my uni started a couple weeks ago, I just moved to a new apartment, and I'm working at a fast food place for 20 hours a week. So I don't have a lot of time any more. :( But I do have this....

It started out as that funny looking head, and was going to be the soldier, but I suggested, and Timbo agrees, that this model would accually probably be better as the dragoon. And just in-case all of you readers are not up with all the tremulous info....
the dragoon is the second to highest level class. It is quite powerful and has a leap attack that can be charged up. The upgrade for this class also can shoot blobs that will freeze targets (and possibly distract gun turrets as well)
Problem is that the head doesnt work that great... so anyone have any suggestions? :)

btw, the model is rigged... and thats also why some of it looks a bit weird, have to work out some of the quirks. It'll probably be about the same size as the big mofo, but not as tall...

hooray, I have some time off for thanksgiving. Three days to be exact. So today went by, and I animated the alien builder class, and got it in-game.

Day 2: Finished Big Mofo Animations

The first image shows the mofo's taunt animation. He roars.
Second image shows his charge attack. Thats where he goes crazy and mows through people.
Third image is just him standing there... being big...
perhaps too big, I might need to size him down.

Day 3: Jetpack...
Ok, so I didnt do very much today... but gimme a break, I have to relax a little bit right? :)
I really didnt like the old jetpack, so I re-made it. (looking at crylar's sketches for refernce of course) I also found out how to 'bake' textures. This means that jex (or any other skinner for that matter) can start out with a very good skin that shows what the lighting should look like. So... here it is:

The little colored bits on it come from the flamethrower. The rest is the map's lighting and the skin itself.
Oh yeah... since I had a new jetpack, I had to make new jets that shoot out of it....

Jex has also been working very hard on skinning all those guns I made back then. Because of my newbieness he also re-skinmapped almost all of them too...

(for you observant folks: The mass driver is giving off a blue light, but the flash is green... still have to fix that :-? )
Well, that was my thanksgiving break, have to go to work tomorrow :( then school and more work, then finals... and then christmas break! 3 weeks of nothing but eating good food, getting/giving presents, and tremulous modelling goodness.
oh and, all pictures in this post were taken directly from Tremulous with no post-processing besides cropping.... and file conversion/compression :P

you can never go to big. but what about making it so when it moves it crawls on all 6 legs or what ever that will take care of how tall it is.
about all the human shots are you gonna make a new human model or is it just gonna be sarge?

Sarge fits the bill of what we want as a human player. We will probably re-skin him for the first release, but will most likely create a new human player model for future releases.
Right now, we kinda want to get a game out as soon as possible and a new human player wont add that much in the overall scheme of things.

can we make it so that the Mofo can crouch, where he both ducks and pulls his legs in at the side...
I'd just really like to be a human in a room, then see this mass of alien squeezing through a door, then when he gets through to stand up and like tower over the room :D

The massdriver looks Awsome with skin on. I hope there will be some cool efect or atleast a long railthing.
Godmil - Very nice idea. the big Mofo should be abel to chrouch or some thing, but that would ofcause make him alot slower.

I think with the jetpack and a sniper a big mofo wouldn't stand a chance, unless the the big mofo can throw some shit at em, very nice work as well overflow, I've been browsing, and this mod seems to be very promising :o

although not nessesary for our first release I thought it'd be nice to have animated 1st weapons, as well as the hand that you can always see carrying the weapon. So after a few hours, I have a rigged hand... now I just need to uvw map it and get someone to skin it for me :wink:

M123 - Yeah I know its just a hand, but a hand can look many ways, and this one looks rather good. And this hand don't seem to use many polygons, and the polygons used on it is used very good.
And hands and armes in fps games very often looks like crap from the first person view. I have seen many hand in Mods for HL that makes you cry cause they are so ugely and NOT done well.
But sure if you mean "It's a hand." as in "It's a hand, a hand are no big deal for overflow cause he is leet." then I understand.

The particle system video looks great, can't wait to see some maps using it. But maybe in a more standard codec, already got too many codecs installed.

One of the alien classes could have slime dripping out of its mouth, that would be cool. And if is left a trail a human could spott the trail and folow it, or something.

Or (seans the Partical system seams pretty easy to use) maybe there could be an alien class with like thick yellow steam/gas comming out of his eyes(like Spawn if you have read it).

the drooling idea is good, but why not have the alien builder leave a trail of blood whenever he builds something, so just say ur human, u come around the corner, and see blood on the floor, then u know how to prepare to die by me! :evil:

Anyways.... I've accually been doing some work. Didn't get any done over christmas break, but MoP got a lot of work done. I wonder if I should give you guys a look at what he's done....

We all played Trem last friday and got a 9 player game going. Despite a few minor bugs and the absence of alien models and completed maps, it was quite fun. I think we ended up playing for 3.5 hours

Our human team doing various things. The little 'smiley' above their head means that they're in chat mode, or in a menu. So from left to right: Using the armory to buy upgrades/switch equipment, building a telenode (the blue glowy thing on the ground. Objects with appear like this for sometime until they are done being made, at which time they become 'solid' and useable) And on the very right, someone is chatting.
Oh, and there's what MoP did over the break... new human model, fully animated and working in-game with helmet and light armor upgrades.
Hm, I guess thats it, hopefully I'll be able to update you guys more soon.

The weapon placements aren't really done, and MoP has done little more for rigging/animating than attaching a biped to the model and using id's 'visor' animations. So, hands need to be moved around, etc...
Also, the alpha maps on the hair are a bit simplistic right now and (I really hope) will be fixed sometime before release.

You need to save the file to your harddisk, then open it with a program that can change brightness in jpeg and then save it again.

I rigged up the (alien) soldier, and animated it... and skinned it. So, its in-game now, but I think someone needs to re-skin it because I suuuuuck.
Moving on, I also rigged the chimera. Rigging is fun in that you can easily make your characters do funny things, so thats what I usually do first...

yeah, five icons. I have q3 and Trem each installed twice, as well as another icon that directly starts up a map with cheats on, etc. so I can test stuff out. One install has all the stuff I'm working on, the other is a 'clean' install so when playing Trem on-line so I don't get troubles with the server ;)

15" + 19" = 260.4 in^2
(more than 1.5x physical area)
plus you probably wouldn't run the 21" above 1600x1200 = 1920000 px (edit: I have yet to see one that can go over 1600x1200)
where as I'm at 1600x1200 + 1024x768 = 2706432 px
(almost 1.5x more pixels)
cost of 21" lcd screen: at least $1200 (plus crappy responce times due to size)
cost of 19" crt + 15" lcd: $600
plus having two monitors just looks cooler... but thats just my opinion

Well, I sat down and started working on the last of the alien models named the hydra for now. I kinda added some interesting features, as well as a good helping of tris cause the others said some of my models were too low-poly. So, here it is in DivX format:

anyways....
I've been busy animating aliens. For those of you not testing, I finished up the hydra animations and they're in-game needing only a skin from MoP to be complete.
Also, I've almost animated all of the chimera today. (I think just a death animation left)
So the taunt animation is alwas the most fun. So here it is... still WIP, but probaly wont change much.

Ok, so I haven't been doing much recently modelling-wise. Pretty much all the alien models are done, but are in various stages of completion. They all involve people other than me doing some work though, so I haven't really been doing anything.
But I felt like helping out somehow, so I dl'd gtkradiant and had godmil and jex teach me a few things.

Very cool pipe details and red back/under lighting. Those are things I thought made Jex's Eulogy (http://www.planetquake.com/lvl/comments.asp?id=1685) look great. (plus the fan shadow was a nice touch).

I really like those supports and pipe hangers. And the asymmetric style of the hallway.
My photoshop is stranded on my 98box with a flaky C: drive right now, so I don't have the tools to really work well with textures, but if you can do something with these, go for it:

awesome mapping, i like what i see
only thing i didnt like was the red lighting in on of the shots, for some reason red was always unappealing to me for lighting. i use soft blues whites and yellows, occasionaly a green or orange.

yeah, I was sitting around for a couple hours drawing different bodies when I decided that the original body would probably work pretty good... only problem is that it only has 4 legs. It may or may not look very good to add another pair, but it was 6am, so I decided to go to sleep. :P

Be sure to check them all out! There are some nice screens in there. Especially 89 and the ass-shot shots. (Mofo has a nice ass!)
The tower started in the center. I took some screens. Then we slowly moved to the crate/armoury. In the end the humans blew up the reactor and plummeted down! The mofos then mauled the remaining hummies.
However, Mr_whack had secretly rebuilt the base while I was taking screens. He was generally being a prick so we vote kicked him.
Congratualtions Mr_Whack for being to first person to be vote kicked from a tremulous game!

pretty sure its just the angle that makes it look like its up above the clip brush. We definitely would have gone higher if it wasnt for that ;)

I was the top mofo and was as high as the map would allow. The two of us climbed to the high ledge as soldiers then evolved up there before jumping down onto the chimera. All of us then jumped over and over until I reached the ceiling and couldn't jump anymore. Then we very carefully moved the stack over to the other corner.
Meanwhile Whack had returned under a different name (fooling no one) and built a base in the elevator room. After most people had left I and one other person attacked his base. He was still being a prick so we vote kicked him again and wiped out his stuff. First person to get kicked twice in one game of Tremulous!

i got to agree with whack the game is ment to be played the way he was playing it not dragoon stacking. if you guys want to do that thats fine but dont kick the guy that wants to play the game they way he wants to play the game. he did not kick you for dragoon stacking.

hm, over a month without an update? Its been slow for a while... but I think I'm starting to work a bit more. The current flame thrower doesn't work very well with the hud setup and doesnt really look that great anyways. So I made a new one for jex to have fun with.

but about the radiant thing, i never used qeradiant so its an entirely new interface to me. im just learning the camera and keyboard shortcuts so far. im not really fond of the switching between xyz thing, since ive been used to having 3 seperate grids with each axis in the past. just have to get acclimated to it i suppose.

i believe there is a way to change the lay out so you can have three windows.. *checks*
press p for preferences, goto layout (under interfeace) then click on the interface you want... i havnt tried any of them so i dont know what will work best for you.

if you're mapping for Q3, can I heartedly recommend 1.2.13 (http://www.qeradiant.com/?data=files&files_dir=5). its considerably more painless than any of the later releases (particularly 1.5).

i picked up 1.4 since it was listed as the last complete stable (read: not beta) build they released. im so far pretty situated with how everything works so far, but i do like the sound of less painless lol :)

MoP has stated that he is now much too busy with other projects and school to work on tremulous. So one again, I kinda take over another's modeling duties. However, its only really the battle suit I have to make. Luckily with the human characters, its very easy to animate because id released all the player animations for the q3 players.
For some reason I decided to remake the base trooper model though. I never really liked it to begin with, not because of the artisic value, which is quite higher than my own, but because I feel it doesnt really fit the 'theme' I've created with the aliens, weapons, and other random accessories. So whether or not this will be in the initial release, here are some previews of the human trooper model I made last week, as well as a rigging test animation. It may look famililar because I based it very much on the previous human model shown somewhere in this thread...

I tried making it a .mov, but it ended up having lots of weird artifacts and stuff in it, the file was also almost 3mb :(
However, I have finally done something I think is somewhat worthy skinning-wise... I watched a tutorial and painted a skin for the head of the human model :D

Wow. The stretched left image looks like that guy's face from the movie "altered states" when he drinks too much south american hallucinogen and spends too much time in the isolation tank. It works though, and that's what matters. And it looks good.

MoP gave me the files for the trooper model, and I added a couple of animations so that it would correctly hold the blaster.... yay.

i like it all, cept maybe on the unsuited human, the helmet wraps around to the back (no issue here) and then theres that little part that goes up in the back, shielding the back of his head.. it seams a bit out of place when you see the front-upper part being open (or more open).
