I realize that I, as a Tremulous player, have no right to criticize the SST Tremulous server, as I have no control over what they do with their own server, and it brings in the most players of any other server, which I appreciate. But I can't overlook the absolute hilarity that are the games on this server.
Can you say :acidtube: ????

I don't care what people think, 260 building points per team is absolutely ridiculously funny.
Nevertheless, a little voice in the back of my head says,
"This isn't the way you're supposed to play the game..."
So comment or flame on.

yeah i c what u mean.... there obviously isnt enough acids on that wall...stupid builder u need atleast twice as many for it to be effective dont forget a trapper!!!!!!!! :D

The main problem with high BPS is that noob builders never actually learn to build. They only learn to build two armouries, two medstats, two thousand turrets... etc.
It may sound biased or unfair, but builders who learned on 100bp servers have far more skill than the ones on 200+.
-
I like to kill opponents, I like to fight with opponents, NOT with structures. >100BP = fighting with structures.
I like to fight in the middle of the map, not in front of opponents base and not in my base.
BTW SST is for morons.
-
Of course, one benefit is that a teammate can build an egg farm, and you have enough BP so that you can recover.

exactly, I learned on 100, and I enjoy 100-150 (even that is a bit high) anything more is kinda rediculous.

Don't forget the centurrets of mass destruction :D (aka: newbies on turrets :P)

I saw that picture and remembered why I don't play there anymore.

260 bp? What were they thinking with that game? Servers that use 150 bp already makes it so two teams are fighting a war that never ends. 100 bp is perfect for any size game.
Why is it that so many players want to play games with 50+ players on a small and simple map like atcs with low gravity and 800 build points?
-
Oh boy! Lets all flame SST!
Save your bitching. We all dont like/dislike the things you like/dislike. Some people find SST very fun, the fact that games are pulse pounding, and quite interesting. Going back to regular servers is like going to a different planet, then getting stuck in a rennesance age.
-
Dont take it personal Para, you're always going to have people that like something, and people that dont. Just let 'em be. Its best.
-
Yea, sorry just got off SST, and had a great game, and that crashed my caboose.
-
They're all just jealous because they know that if it were tried on the servers they play on, they would crash. Or something like that.
-
that actually looks fun you know, it REALLY looks like a WAR!!!!!!!
But I don't go on SST... :( cause of the ping is too high and I get laggy too much :(
I wish I could... my school friend likes it there... and I wanna try too!
-
Why all the hate towards SST? I mean noobs have to go somewhere, and I'd rather them go to hell, then come ruin my paradise.
Okay okay -- idea.
Turn off SD and time limit for SST and turn on Transit.
The never ending worst game ever!
I'm sorry, but playing on SST involves no skill at all. The skill aspect is replaced by excess bodies and build points.
This game is part RTS. When people on SST demonstrate skill and actual strategy, maybe it won't be looked down upon by so many.
It would also help if SSTers stayed on SST. There's nothing like someone who comes on and thinks they can randomly spam structures because they do it all the time over there. Then you decon it, yell at them, and they put it in the exact same spot. Then they move to the one door room on Niveus.
-
SST is teh sux and teh noob server and it sux.
actually since its not in euro my ping is always too high to share the fun over there :(
-
SST is actually quite fun untill humies reach s2! After that it's anger management.
It's strange that so many people play there and still TK.
Also, while I'm pro alien, I hate the fact that the moons have to align just right for the hummies to win there. Just isnt fair to hummie players.
I like 50/50 games that involve strategy, attacking in waves, sneaky attacks, Tremma and his painsaw!
None of this is possible at SST.
But yes, I'd rather those players stay there then spread over to the normal servers.
Paradox, this isnt a critique on you or confes but rather the typical games on your server. Try not to take it personally.
-
imo, 100bp games are perfect -- you can build a nice base (with some planning), but it can still be taken down by a tyrant and goon+ (or painsaw and chaingun, for you sapiens :P )
-
Hmmm how come there are so many rants about that server and the server is still full nearly every hour?
If a server does not suit you, just don't play there...
-
Don't try taking away peoples' favorite topic of hate. On this forum, I have seen 3 different sides of SST:
1. You love to hate it
2. You love it
3. You could care less
Most of the people posting in this thread are classified as either 1 or 2.
I have played on SST and on other servers. Most of the complaints I see about SST are either just as bad on most other servers or are worse. That is mainly about body count (someone said something like SST is basically only for high scores) and building (obviously if there are so many build points, people are going to build poorly).
It's better that people looking for a high kill count go to SST than some other server where they either outclass or out-cheat the other players. I was playing a game recently where the scores were pretty much as should be expected (pretty even on both teams, going gradually lower from top to bottom). The only exception to this was one player who had more than 4 times as many kills as the next highest scorer in the game. This was not on SST.
When I play I usually try to do my best at paying attention to what I'm doing and what people are saying. When I've played -- or even built -- on SST, I have seen that between the first or fifth complaint, builders start listening. On other servers, many of the builders are really arrogant and stupid (SST has its share of those too, but they usually get tked). There have been many games where my team was very clearly better than the other team, but we lost because our builders were morons who refused to listen.
At least on SST you have enough build points that people can do stupid things and still have a decent base.
Sorry.

Some people find SST very fun, the fact that games are pulse pounding, and quite interesting. Going back to regular servers is like going to a different planet, then getting stuck in a rennesance age.
Funny, I quit going to SST because I found the games to be exceedingly boring after the intrerest of 8000000 acid tubes wore off. No offence Paradox, but if a player is looking for a strict fps then SST is definitely the way to go and I still go there for that on occasion, but for those of us who find RTS style games exciting, a 1v1 or 5v5 match is much more pulse pounding, IMO. I suppose a good 12v12 with experienced players would be very good too.
You aren't going to the renaissance, you're actually going to what the game was intended to be, and FPS and RTS, again, IMO.
-
Yeah, don't get me wrong. The odd MMORPGFPS on SST is nice every now and then. If it had less bps and less noobs it might not be so bad.
-
I don't hate SST in particular, I just hate the fact that people learn how to build on it, and then come on 100 bp servers and except to be able to build 2 bases. It's just annoying.
-
I suppose it's a sort of love/hate thing for me and SST.
I love having enough BP as an alien to actually make effective defenses, and being able to recover from the ever helpful egg-farmer grangers.
Of course, I also hate all the goddamn noobs. I get tired of S1 Bugs vs S3 humans, and the random votekicks for no apparent reason. And the random construction spamming. And the TK'ing base shooting idiots.
-
It's not even about building poorly. It's about building defenses that have absolutely no chance of being taken down, since they're well nigh indestructible. Eight Tesla coils down one corridor in Arachnid, with the traditional camping humans, spells almost instant death. I know I said before I have no right to criticize, but I have to opine, that it is a lesson in tedium.
-
No, you have a right to criticize. Base building is an art. SST bases are the emo music of this art.
My favorite part of the picture you posted is no visible defenses at the reactor. I don't see you could have 260 build points and not have at least 1 turret defending the reactor. Never know when you're going to get s2 and that one guy will discover grenades on your turret wall.
-
I agree with rasz about not wanting to spend the entire game trying to destroy a turret farm... I'd rather be killing people than structures and as an alien it gets pretty annoying. Humans at least have grenades and can shoot from the door.. aliens have to walk up to the turrets with the stacks of humans on them and try to get lucky and get no evo points for their efforts. To compound the problem under full load the server gets a bit laggy for me when I attack the enemy base..
I do understand why they do it though.. with that many people on the server you do need higher build points because its constant attack, and if you don't have enough it becomes "build a turret every 5 seconds because the waves of aliens keep taking them out through sheer erosion"-fest...
Also since there are so many people someone is bound to come out of the base and give you a kill..you don't really have to search for enemies.. they are everywhere.
-
SST has a more exclusive server too, SST hellfire.
-
Any server with more than 18 players and more than 100 build points is just riduculous.

*goes to make a 19 player server with 101 build points* :P

Don't make yourself ridiculous! ;)

So... i played on SST for a while yesterday (i've never played there much due to high pings), and i think it actually works quite well.
As per individual players, you die alot more. Your tyrant might only manage to destroy 5 turrets before dying, but there are enough people playing that there's another tyrant to keep up the work.
It takes a while, but eventually someone will win ;)

I like the huge numbers of build points on SST... but you've seriously got to consider de-admining a large number of the petty vindictive idiots that you've, for some reason, granted admin rights. Their behaviour is poisonous, and just creates griefers.

Who should we remove, and why?
