Yet the texture quality looks horrible, some examples:

You should only have your brightness setting up that high if you absolutely cannot see anything otherwise.  The brightness is up so high that the computer won't allow the textures to be shown beyond the absolute basics.  If you still need the brightness up that high,
buy a new monitor.  :)

The reason is slightly different than "the computer won't allow it."  Basically, at that brightness, the textures are washed out -- much the same as if you were to over expose a photograph.  If you have photoshop, open up a picture and put a box around the whole thing.  Fill it with white and then adjust the alpha settings of the box a bit and you'll see the same effect.  By adding all the extra brightness you remove colour information as limited by your display and graphics card.

in other words instead of bumping up brightness in trem do it in windows/linux :)
bump up the saturation - it will make red BLEED out of monitor and green will look like you have some real grass glued to it :P

Look at the Thief: The Dark Project, Thief II: The Metal Age or the System Shock 2 manual for info on how to set your gamma perfectly. By following these guidelines you will ensure that the balance between brightness and visual splendour is just about right.
