Title: chat program, when?
Post by: Confess on October 31, 2006, 04:04:01 am
When is someone going to create a program so you can chat in Tremulous, and use rcon commands/etc? Perhaps even link it with the Tremulous IRC Channel so they can talk there, eh?

How do you mean "chat"? Ingame chat?

The official IRC channel is #tremulous on quakenet

Edit: oops changed freenode to quakenet

I mean, a program that you can use...instead of Tremulous...to connect to a trem server for use of Administration/to talk to people/etc.

That would be the console... Just use "say" or "m"
So no need to implement a new "chat" for that.

He means an external program which reads what is said/happening ingame and is able to send text messages/commands back into the game without being there. Many games have an irc-plugin like that. Admins sometimes use it to monitor the servers when they can't be there due to work, time constraints or the fact that trem isn't on the pc. He could hardly have said it more clearly.

Besides the IRC-part, where was my answer wrong?
Espescially when you consider your own statement?

IMNHO it is better to ssh to the console than to use irc, not only security wise (all pwds are transmitted as pure unencrypted text), but also because most company setups have a policy that denies the use of irc and the like.
And what's even better is the fact that you don't have to setup anything, just use ssh and you are set...

there IS a external rcon tool. its called HLSW. no clue what that means but, all you do is  type in the server ip and type in rcon password and your good to go.

It would probably take use a slot. You could keep it connected all the time and increase the number of slots when you want to connect, but...

The program you are looking for is HLSW. www.hlsw.org

You can find the config files required to add more trem support here : http://www.tremulous.info/downloads/HLSW-Trem.zip

But tremulous is not fully supported as it is. I think someone should contact the HLSW people to get it into the game (MIRC support would be cool).

Probably all it would take is someone posting the proper things on their wiki.
