Title: Announcer
Post by: Odin on November 10, 2006, 02:38:31 am
I think it would make the game a bit more fun if we had more announcer voices(not just the "The overmind is under attack/dying"). For example, something along the lines of Starcraft, where(in that game, at least) if your units are under attack, the announcer will say "Our forces are under attack". Of course we couldn't have this for players getting attacked. It'd be better for just structures that are under attack.
In fact, there's already an announcement when the reactor/overmind is under attack, but it's just text. If it had an announcer say the words, then it would make the game a lot more fun, in my opinion. It would make the game a bit more immersive.
If the structures are being hit by enemies, it only plays seldom, so that it's not constantly spamming the sound.

If a structure is hit, it says "Our base is under attack."
If a player is hit, it says "Our forces are under attack(but not for the player getting hit)"

"The Overmind needs spawns"
If you don't have a granger, by the time you hear that you are already too late.
And why isn't there one that says "Our forces need telenodes"

I wish all of the bugs could hear: "The Overmind has Awakened!"

The sound is already there, even.

"Watch your fire!"

It's really fun when aliens have S3, humans have S1, and all of a sudden, the pretty little tyrants hear "The Overmind neeeeeeeds spaaaawwnns" and "The Overmind is under attack" in short succession.

Since human buildings damage each other when they explode, how would the reactor (which I should mention is not alive) know if it's being attacked or another building is?

It doesn't. It's just that when they take damage from an enemy, which is possible to detect, the game shows the announcement.

*HUMILIATION! when blasted or gassed ^^

and

ELVIS HAS LEFT THE BUILDING!

The reactor does give a "Base is Under Attack" warning even if it is damaged by friendly fire or by buildings exploding.
Incoming tyrants!
Sound the alarm!
*Shoots reactor with blaster*

And there is nothing more priceless than walking around hunting down eggs than hearing "Overmind has awakened"

You don't understand, techhead. I mean a sound file plays when that alert comes up.

would also be nice to have something like UT:
FIRST BLOOD
MULTI KILL
DOMINATING

etc

Nice idea, but don't overdo it (if anyone is planning to make the sounds..)
---
On a random twist, here's a suggestion! (yes, i said that)

What about getting an alert/watching/radar structure that detects enemies within a certain range? something expensive that take X% of your current bps?
That would make it reasonable to include a map+radar in the hud.

wadayathank?

How about a voice menu? And for binds you can do like /bind 1 "voicechat 1(menu1) 5(submenu5)"

;)

how about you use the search button? there have been at least 4 threads on it, and in at least the last 2, the devs have said that it will go into the next version of tremulous.

No pls NO !

As much as i like UT, i dont want this in Trem. UT is supposed to be a "sport" in a far away future. Tremulous is supposed to be a real battle.

I sure dont want a guy to say "first blood" or "unstoppable" when i m in a dark, silent room, where the only source of noise is a fan, and aliens are hiding in the shadows.

Well, as far as player model lighting will allow them to be "hiding".
:D

Oh god, flashbacks to Nexuiz.

Midair Nex hit = Announcer says "Did Yoda show you that?"

Yeah, it's a bit more like:

Quote from: "Nexuiz Announcer"
"Did *mumble mumble* show you that?"

I couldn't ever figure out what the hell the announcer was trying to say.  I don't think I would have ever figured it out if it hadn't been mentioned on the forums.

Now, back on topic, Tremulous should go real easy on the whole announcer thing.  It can be damn obnoxious in other games, and that whole "First Kill!" thing doesn't really fit here.  A little expansion on what we have would be fine; I just hope it isn't overdone.

Well the game has RTS elements; I thought maybe we'd use some of the things that are common in other RTS'. such as an announcer guy who says your forces are under attack/etc.

Btw.... there are at least 2 MASSIVE threads about voice binds.. I know.. because I was a part of them and they were really really exhaustive.. don't bother turning this one into one.. we think its a great idea, there is even a weird script or something someone made that actually emulates the menus using binds in trem if i'm not mistaken.

I think Tremulous is just fine without those pesky announcers.
