Savage: The Battle for Newerth is a fantasy/sci-fi computer game that combines aspects of Real-time strategy and First-person shooter into one game. The producers of the game define it as a 'Real Time Strategy Shooter', or 'RTSS'. It takes place in the far future where man has (after an apocalypse) rebuilt society, but is now threatened by intelligent beasts. On September 1st 2006, S2Games made the game free to download on their website.
The goal of Savage is to destroy your opponents Stronghold/Lair, as this is the main point at which the Soldiers spawn(they can also spawn from garrisons/sublairs(which can be built) and spawnflags(which can't)).
Savage is played completely online with other human players. The game has 2 teams (usually Humans vs. Beasts, but other configurations, like Human vs. Human, are possible). Each team has one commander, who plays the game like a Real-Time Strategy game. They research weapons, place buildings to be built, and—of course—command everyone. Whom ever clicks on the command button first gets to be the commander, which can, of course, lead to some problems with bad commanders and the like. To counter this, the team can call impeach votes, and the new players can go and learn to command on empty servers. The other 1 to 31 players on the team are the soldiers, and they play it like a First-Person Shooter. Most of their job involves killing the enemies, but they can also help build buildings and gather resources. Some Soldiers can be promoted to the rank of Officer by their commander. Officers can help the coordinate the other soldiers, and can work with the commander to coordinate attacks that the commander could not do on their own. There are also up to ten workers on either team, but they are directly controlled by the commander, and are used mostly for construction and resource gathering.
The soldiers fight using a melee weapon, which is unique to their unit, and a selectable ranged weapon, which have no unit restrictions. They also have 3 slots to hold items such as Medkits, Bombs, and other such things.
Each race has unique strengths and weaknesses. The Beasts are proficient at melee attacks, as emphasized by their ability to leap towards their enemies and by the fact that their first weapon line is completely melee based. Humans, on the other hand, focus on ranged attacks more, which is demonstrated through their lack of special melee weapons, and with their ability to block anything infront of them.

CRAPPY CRAPPY GAME (yeah, i've just played it)

Its been freeware for a while now as a promo for Savage2. The original game was released a few years ago.
The game would have been awesome with ragdoll physics when you whack people with those big tree wielding beasties.

Noobius"]CRAPPY CRAPPY GAME (yeah, i've just played it)
Its faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaar from crappy.

as in down right shitty?

Look, you lot are mainly FPS players, aren't you? Savage is more of a RPG type thing, isn't it?
If these are true, it means you're just used to quite a different sort of game, so it might not appeal to you. Think of the people who come from straight FPS like... Quake, and start playing Trem, then say it's really, really bad and unbalanced.
You're just a different audience.
I've downloaded and installed Savage, but about all I've managed t oget it to do is kill me X Server (I'm running Fedora 6, most recent NVIDIA drivers avaliable from repo). I'm asking for help on another forum, but that doesn't mean you can slack off (:P).

Yeah, Savage is fun if you take the time to learn it and get used to it. Its not for the crowd who give up on it after 5 minutes cos they can't get max level.

Its not a Tremulous knock off, its one of a great many Gloom knockoffs.
-
I could not get the game to run. It kept complaining about a log file not being able to open.
-
meh, Gloom is just a Doom rip-off. Humans vs non-humans its been done to death.

Did you install it as root? If so, either just install it as a your normal user, or change the permissions so anything can do anything to it.
I am assuming you're using GNU/Linux.
P.S. The problem I mentioned earlier is to do with the NVIDIA driver version I've got, the latest one (in the livna repo, at least) has a known bug.

ReapeR LIKES ALOT.

All these games came from somewhere else, they aren't all just rip-offs (and I have not played savage)
Umm. Yes. I'm immitating belier. My post count is too low.
-
Yeah, I'm spoiled by straight FPS gameplay.
Grinding before going out to fight strikes a nerve with me.
-
Not sure how this is a Gloom or trem rip-off, but maps look rather interesting.
I'm somewhat of a fan of outdoor maps (something neither Gloom nor Trem have successfully pulled off) and the brightness of the game makes it very different from your regular done-to-death Quake mods.
1.5 thumbs up from me.

I played this a little. It isn't bad but the scale will turn off new people. I liked the healers on human side and the twig fireball throwing things on beast side. The only drawback is that its really large scale and its easy to lose focus without a solid commander.

FPS+MMORPG+RTS? *pukes*
-
necroing a thread to say that? *pukes*

:D
-
heh...heh...hahah...
I have a question though, does Savage take huge amount of memory, does it need a really big driver, or is it small?
-
It works fine on 512MB, but it requires an atleast 6 inch driver, so you won't be able to play.

how suxorz
