Title: Gui Option Suggestions
Post by: TyrranzzX on November 28, 2006, 05:14:07 am
Word filters:  If an individual doesn't like words being said then they can set up their own word filters to block words they may find offensive.  A Default script can be created during install and switched on in the controls.

Favorites/Blacklists:  Some servers are run well and you have a good time on; others are run by the spawn of satan and deserve not to get traffic.  Therefor, when your server list is refreshed your favorite servers appear at the top, and blacklisted servers at the bottom.  To favorite or blacklist a server you simply click in an icon in a box next to it to change it from a thumbs up or thumbs down or thumbs sideways symbols (or something equally as simple).  Additionally, when a server bans you, the listing status shouldn't be changed but the server gets a B in the spot.

Regions:  Basically, there should be 6 regions when a server is listed:  North America East, North America Central, North America West, North America Canada, Europe, Asia, and Other.  When a server lists itself, it lists itself in one, or more, categories.  When a client makes a request to the master server, it asks for 1 or more of these lists.  This reduces unwanted bandwidth use by the server and keeps 500-server long lists down to 50-100 good servers.

Pub and Tournament modes:  Pub mode is used for pubbing; players freely join teams and can switch to another team or to obs freely and may set their settings based on what they want and may use whatever scrips and gui's they choose.  In Tournament mode, players join a game and are  subject to automatic team placement or placement by the admin, having their settings changed upon joining the server, passworded and other useful features such as an obs recorder or auto-force-recorder at game start, for example.

Automatic Auto-team select:  Server admins can force players to join a team at the game start, within the first minute or two of gameplay and players who were left over from the previous game may not switch teams or to obs without waiting 5 minutes.  This stops the problem of teamstacking mulitple games in a row.

Sounds like "american way" of replacing proper parenting and education with "parental control software".

We (well, I) allready established that: Wouldnt it be easier on your part to just tell us that you lack basic communication skills and/or education. But that doesnt mean others do too. Its funny how you propose a solution for an effect that you are a cause of, when the real solution is to deal with a cause itselfe (via !kick/!ban).

Your list has 7, and America is 2/3 or the world? I think not.
And I get better ping to some American servers than some European ones that are 'nearer'.

That's because America has crappy internet and so they need smaller subdivisions to get servers with a good ping :D

It has more to do with peering arrangements than location.
The state of the Internet in the US is just fucking pathetic. Don't take away my words, fool!

Word filters strike me as a little bit silly.

Favorites/blacklist: Meh.

Regions:  I don't see the point.  Filter out empty servers, sort by ping, and there you go.

Pub/Tournament:  Meh.

Auto team select: it would certainly be worth a larf to see everyone complain when randomly placed.  It would also make for some interesting statistics.

Considering most server admins kick and ban for "inappropriate langauge" (read; wordophobia), making sure you take that responsability away from the admins and put it on the players is a key to reducing the number of disputes.  I'v seen games where word filters weren't in place on clients, and a lot of insane people who hate certain words will go all out to kickban people from their server, slowly both destorying it's reputation, their reputation, everyones fun, and wasting a lot of time.

Also, region is handy not for determining ping but packet loss.  What I gave was an example, and you can have 50 regions if you'd like.  Servers that are farther away are on international fiber and satellite lines which drop packets based on importance, often by port and common gaming ports such as 28000 are the lowest on the list and ISP's route major business lines first.  More importantly, the father away something is the more equipment (routers, switches, gateways, ect) it must go through.  Each device adds a 5-15ms processing speed penalty to the connection.

Therefor, while you may have a latency to a japanese server of 100ms, your packetloss may be over 20% which makes a game unplayable.

no, we are not interested in you trying to control the interwebs.

We (the internetters, or geeks) want to have ANYTHING on the net!

There is a line between profanity and vulgarity.
Profanity is fine, everyone does some form of it occasionally.
Vulgarity in a public server should definitely get you kicked.

Actually, I'd think it'd make good sense to include an auto-mute feature for spam and give each client the ability to mute other clients.

Techead;  I'm not going to get into a debate about wordophobia because frankly, the wordophobes have baught into a perminant fear-based delusion which both worsens the state of themselves and others around them.  I simply do not appreciate nor welcome anyones version of censorship.  If I don't want the information, I am perfectly mature enough to cut and snip what I do and don't want and I expect everyone who uses the internet to be able to do the same.

Word filters would be quite a good idea.

You can download something like QTracker and use it to look at regions

Maby a serverside option? There are already a few cvars that can kindof do this.

There is already, it is called g_forceTeamAutoSelect, and it is in R1 and possibly tjw. As for forcing players to have a wait time on new game, it exists too, called warmup.

On sst, we have a mute vote, come in and /callvote mute player.

As for muting other players, an !ignore command would be better.
