If you look in the server list you'll see something like 8 servers at the moment. We've switched servers and the DNS stuff has to propagate or something... I don't really know anything about the details, but I think everything should be back within a few hours. Thanks for your patience!
-
Its also that you have made it so there isnt any more of the list gaming shit.
-
Do you mean the people who put spaces in front of their server names just to be higher on the list?
-
So that's why there were only 2 servers earlier.
Acctually thanks :D! Without that redo thingy, I wouldn't have got onto clan practice!
-
Yea, spaces, things like 111AAAAAA!!!

Just so everyone knows what happened...
I fired up trem today after not playing in quite a while and did a server refresh, only to see tons of servers with "______TREMULOUS" etc style names with spaces and tabs and stuff in the name with the goal being to bring the server to the top of the list. This seemed awfully selfish behaviour that exploited the default sort ordering in trem, so as the master server was hosted on one of my servers, I tried to fix it by stopping those servers with "spammy" hostnames from reporting to the master.
Later in the day the master server is changed to a different IP. Coincidence? Perhaps. I never heard from anyone about this change, in any case it appears the new master once again accepts servers with spaces and what-not before the hostname. I submitted a patch of my changes just in case they want to change that.
Now the ugly part: as a result of the IP change, clients will query the new master server but every server will still report to the old master until the server is completely restarted. Granted, I probably pissed someone off by messing around with the master server which dented the pretty graphs (http://), but this seems like a much worse situation to be in with most of the servers unavailable at all on the new master. It could be weeks or even months before every server switches to the new IP.
-
Since the only thing required for a server to switch IP is a restart, every server which still has an admin around will be able to get the new IP.
So in less than a week it will be done on all servers with admins...Only servers who have been dropped by admins (and are often full of bugs/griefers) will be slow to rejoin the new server. I would say this is a good thing since really shitty servers wont get players anymore.
-
Maybe you just shouldn't have touched it.
-
Well that lessen,s my fear of not getting to play on good server,s again.
-
Following the master server move, the following servers need to be restarted in order to be listed. Alternatively, change the setting of the sv_master1 cvar to something other than "master.tremulous.net", then set it back again. If any of you have time on your hands, feel free to let the operators of these servers know :).
Sorry about this, I'm as annoyed about it as everyone.

GREAT

oh crap
I submitted a patch of my changes just in case they want to change that.
/me thinks its a dick thing, not talking with "The one we all refer to as God" might have something to do with it.
-
so what do we do?
-
I think the no spaces at the start of the name thing is a good idea, but don't drop them, just chuck them at the bottom.
Also, R1CH should have al least given warning.
-
Glad SST isnt on the list of rebooters.
It appears SST has spaces again. I didnt add them back, but confess might have wanted them, so ill talk to him.
-
I set up a redirector on the old master IP pointing servers to the new IP. This is a temporary workaround until the above servers all restart, but the new master should now list all servers.
-
stop messing with the master server
you make it sad
-
I have only blocked the servers with spammy names that were hitting my old master IP (maybe 20 servers). The IP move by the trem team has caused most of the problems, since all the servers continued to report to the old master IP. I still have about 60 servers trying to use my old master IP so I am redirecting them to the new master so they get listed which I figure is the best solution.

Of course.. it is my fault for acting too impulsively on this matter, but the response from the trem team was equally as impulsive and arguably made the problem even worse. All they needed to do was ask me to stop messing with it and I would have gladly done so. But I probably shouldn't have started messing around in the first place.
-
it was a good idea but there should have been a warning. the end. its over. now just play already! 8)
-
so all we have to do is restart our servers?
-
Good times!
Restarting Boom Boom appeared to work. It's appearing on the master list now.
-
so all we have to do is restart our servers?
Yes, although there is no rush any more since all servers that still report to the old master will show on the new master. Just do the restart at a quiet time with no players on within the next few months :P.
-
Well all the servers that reappeared seem to have bad ping for me  500,666,750...................Guess i wont be playing for a month or maybe a week.
-
FYI: I restarted the CU-clan server right now.
